I saw an 850 ragtop in San Rafael, California, within the past year or two. In an auto repair shop, of course. If nothing else, the return of Fiats that generally resemble these old ones, and the Disney/Pixar movie ‘Cars’ has made the 850s more likely to cause folks to wonder “What’s that?”

I love this! My great grandad had a 1969 berlina, in beige with red interior! They stopped using it in 1980 circa but never sold it nor trashed it, so it remained in the house. In 2005 or so, my grandad decided it was time to restore it, so we did it! It was so funny looking, so cute! We sold it ten years ago or so to a collectionist who, I guess, still drives it!

Definitely an interesting little car. Surprising performance from such a small engine. My lawn mower is 18 HP! It is interesting that Briggs and Stratton, who made my lawn mower engine, made a hybrid car in the 1980's using one of their 18 HP twin engines. They claimed that 18 HP is all you needed once you get a car up to cruising speed. Having an electric motor definitely helped performance but, if I recall correctly, you could just use the little gas engine. Anyway, fun to see some of these unique little cars.

Hugely pretty car/van and colour scheme. Glad you mentioned the Primula as the original fwd car with end on box, yes as part of Fiat it was a ground breaking design, one they employed on the 128 ( before the 127 as you mentioned) which was voted Euro Car of the Year. To think now most if not all modern car manufacturers follow this design both in terms of saving manufacturing costs , as aided by Macpherson struts they can install the engine / gearbox/ front suspension/ brakes all in one manoeuvre, but also gives potentially more usable space in the volume of the car. Love the video , thought she sounded as well looked very sweet

10:53 "I'm not even sure what that is..." It's a plug-in light to use if the car breaks down at night. We had an identical one in our 1991 Lada Niva in Australia. I suspect that one in the Autobianchi is actually a Russian light. It is hard to read on my screen, but it looks like CCCP in the top left - which is USSR in the Russian alphabet. You unscrew the big cap and there is a long wire and plug tucked inside, with the 12 volt bulb in the centre.

A friend of mine bought a survivor with only a tiny bit of rust in Italy: A Panoramica with glass behind the door. He painted it in its original grey color. It does not look as fancy as this one. But it is cute never the less. When me and my wife were young we nearly bought a Bianchina Coupe (with a vinyl roof that you could open). Unfortuanely it was missing to many parts. And was to rusty. There were even full convertibles. Super cute vehicles with tiny fins. For over ten years I saw a Bianchina in a junkyard it Tuscany. I loved to see it when we were driving on the Autostada. The junkyard is gone and the Bianchina as well.

Double de-clutching is a good practice to learn even if you are driving a car with a synchromesh gearbox. It means you extend the life of the synchromesh and, in a low powered car (especially in a hilly area), you maximise available power and conserve momentum. After all, "power, less is more". There is something so satisfying about rev-matching on the down change and feel the gears mesh smoothly.

Downchange throttle blips were such fun!

One of my Triumphs had weak synchro so I used to DD to save the gearbox. It becomes second nature and is great fun when you get it right quickly and regularly changing down. I recommend anyone with an old car to do it just to get your driving skills up. And of course you cant go wrong cos you have the synchros! All you have to do is match engine speed with final drive so everyone can do it with practice.

What a gorgeous little van beautifully restored. It's the sort of vehicle you call for and night to put to bed like a cat on a cold winters night. The closest I've come to using a crash gearbox was in my first car, a very tired old Mini 1000 where the synchromesh in 2nd gear had either gone awol or was sleeping off a hangover back in the day. Double declutch and rev matching was the only way with that. Fortunately being an old motorcycle rider (no synchro on those, constant mesh only) that wasn't that much of an issue for me but everyone else who drove it hated it along with the digital clutch (on or off with almost nothing in between). I guess the nearest thing that followed the Biachina was the Mini van, another car that I almost bought and in hindsight should have instead of the afore mentioned very tired MIni 1000.
@Nino5002 жыл бұрын
In my experience a synchro box with knackered synchro is more difficult to use than a crash (or dog) box. At least with the dogs, there'a few degrees of slop when they slot into gear but, with a knackered sychro, you're trying to align quite fine splines so, if it's not perfect, it grinds! Sychro is wonderful though. It's not recommended but you can pull away without touching the clutch with a strong synchro; just nudge the lever towards first, but not right in, and the synchro rings will engage and creep forwards.

Rev matching is a very useful skill for any driver of manual gearbox vehicles to have. If you ever lose clutch functionality, then that skill can get you home or to a garage. We had a Metro, 30 years ago, which had an awful hydraulic clutch with 3 hydraulic cylinders in the system, and air leaks were a constant problem which never was fixed successfully. I drove thousands of miles, often with almost no clutch. Scary if you don't understand double de-clutching, but almost no problem at all (except for starting from a standstill on an adverse gradient) if you have the skill.

A number of car companies started out making bicycles. Rover and Humber are two I can think of and I think there are a few more. Puch and Peugeot also make bikes but I don't know whether they started out doing so before making cars.
@HubNut2 жыл бұрын
Peugeot certainly did. Existed a fair while before the motor car.
@pdsnpsnldlqnop33302 жыл бұрын
Peugeot started with salt and pepper grinders and you can still get them today if you have a few hundred pounds spare. In general, everything started in a bicycle workshop. If you can make a bike you can make a car or a plane. The Wright brothers are the classic example but they patented everything and this held back the U.S. aeroplane business for a very long time, hence European plane makers were the innovators until war came along. Reliant is a name you need to add to your list. They called it Reliant because they bought everything from Raleigh and it was easy to change the branding and tooling to 'Reliant'. BSA - British Small Arms - also play in the British bikes to anything else story. If you can't afford to restore a classic car, restore a classic Peugeot bicycle from the 1980's. They pioneered an internal brazing technique that resulted in beautiful frames. Every one is a classic and just needs period correct NOS European parts from Weinmann, Rigida, Sachs Huret et al.
