And he was only 18! He did the same with Lauryn Hill a few years ago. He had a bottle of champagne in his hand, dropped it but kept rapping while switching mic!

Remember hearing this track around 1990. Before Nas blew up!!! The Large Professor would come to the house to pick up Joe Fatal. Joe Fatal was dating my big sis at the time. I remember Fatal introducing me the G-Rap. And hanging with G-Rap when I was 12 years old. Joe Fatal was one kool Kat. I would chill in his house in Jackson Heights. Back when I was Jackson Heights and Corona bound!!! Those days were the best. Reminiscing of hearing Streets of New York before it hit the radio waves!!! ✌ ✌ ✌ ✊ ✊ ✊

Still incredible yet surprised it’s not shared more. The bars were just insane for a kid named Nas..in my honest opinion I think the choice of instrumental makes this even more so and that needs credit too. Jam to this in a HQ MP3. It sounds completely insane.

The greatest first verse in hip hop history obviously. It has so much of what would make Nas the greatest MC ever. He doesn’t do the documentary style window into queensbridge stuff here that he did on Illmatic, but it’s a guest verse so that wouldn’t have fit. He does braggadocio better than anyone and it isn’t close. He also uses religious imagery better than anyone. The best line of a first verse announcing a bad mother fucker was here to stay. “When I was 12, I went to hell for snuffing Jesus.” I mean it doesn’t get any harder than that. He used that some for shock value, but it’s just such a badass line. Legend.

I just realized that one of my favorite perfomances, Cormega's "Live Freestyle At The Infamous Release Party 1995", sounds heavily influenced by this verse specifically - maybe hearing it live was what made it click. The punchline setups, cadences etc.

Street's disciple, my raps are trifle I shoot slugs from my brain just like a rifle Stampede the stage, I leave the microphone split Play Mr. Tuffy while I'm on some Pretty Tone shit Verbal assassin, my architect pleases When I was 12, I went to Hell for snuffin' Jesus Nasty Nas is a rebel to America Police murderer, I'm causin' hysteria My troops roll up with a strange force I was trapped in a cage and let out by the Main Source Swimmin' in women like a lifeguard Put on a bulletproof, nigga, I strike hard Kidnap the president's wife without a plan And hangin' niggas like the Ku Klux Klan I melt mics till the sound wave's over Before steppin' to me you'd rather step to Jehovah Slammin' MCs on cement 'Cause verbally I'm iller than a AIDS patient I move swift and uplift your mind Shoot the gift when I riff in rhyme Rappin' sniper, speakin' real words My thoughts react, like Steven Spielberg Poetry attacks, paragraphs punch hard My brain is insane, I'm out to lunch, God Science is dropped, my raps are toxic My voice box locks and excels like a rocket
