Let's look in on 3 geckos that most people NEVER see in the hobby.
Featuring Nephrurus levis levis, Pachydactylus rangei, and one of the rarest geckos in my collection, Chondrodactylus angulifer.
These geckos just are NOT kept by that many people. They do have some special care needs but are not super difficult.

I love when the bugs touch the Geckos feet and they are like" GET OFF ME" as they shake them off. Every once in a while Pumpkin will do that and the dubia will fly out of the cup. Then she ends up chasing it until she eats it😄 Pumpkin has gone from 15g to 31g since September. Thanks for all your great advice. The once a week dubias has done the trick! Great video Wally

What kind of sand is this, if I may ask? Just curious, if it’s anything special, or a specific calci-sand product? Another question… sorry!! 🥴😅 I have a pair of African fat tails. Female only laid a few times; the eggs were either single & bad, or were crushed before I got to them. So, in your experience, do fat-tailed geckos like a more organic sort of soil? I’ve had them for over ten years, on sandy clay substrates. Specifically, pond plant substrate, from the nursery. It’s basically just organic clay, and since I’m not using it in a pond, it stays dry and firm. Forms a hard but permeable layer. Conducts heat nicely. And cools well. It responds well when I mist the tank, and dries perfectly with NO dust. Also no risk of impaction when feeding. Now I’m realizing fat tails aren’t entirely desert dwellers, lol. This has been fine, for growing soft succulents.. But I’m thinking a richer, soft soil could provide that little boost of natural humidity, though… and be more close to “home”. After watching some Zilla videos on wild fat tails, I’m rethinking. It’d for sure be more for the plants’ benefit, as I use live plants in every tank, lol. I don’t know if mine necessarily burrow, they never have in my sight at least. They usually just sleep on top of each other…in their hide, on the heat pad, & that’s good enough.

Hey Erik, I use two types of sand. For most setups, I use a sifted play sand from a Home Improvement store. For knobtails, I use Repti-Sand. Love it. "do fat-tailed geckos like a more organic sort of soil". I don't think the substrate matters much to them as long as it will maintain some humidity. More important is how you can maintain it. I like bio-active setups, so mixing peat with a dirt works well for me.

@@HKoch-ny3em This helps H. Koch. I still don't know what you mean by 'pure' sand vs. just regular sand. If you are asking why I keep these geckos over sand, it is because they are either found on sand, or they dig in sand, in nature. Does this help or am I still on the wrong path. Thanks for clarifying.
