The SD40E (rebuilt SD50) was a pretty neat inclusion, too, but that GP16 was definitely the star of the show.
The GP16s are rebuilds of GP7, GP9, and GP18 locomotives on the Seaboard Coast Line, and later the Family Lines System..
One of the biggest differences is that they received EMD 645 prime movers to replace their aged EMD 567 prime movers. This program was similar to the Santa Fe’s CF7 program, as well as the GP9M program. Various aspects were rebuilt between shops in Tampa, Jacksonville, and Waycross from 1979 to 1982.
CSX would utilize them for nearly a decade before finally purging the roster through sales and retirement. Many GP16s found their way, alongside GP9Ms, onto the US Army’s roster in 1993, while many others remain on short lines and excursions.
