@@growlanser5600 - the zero was not designed to be fast. It had too much wing. secondly, the Japanese never had the fuel octane that the Americans did. The japanese had, at best, 84 Octane. The Americans were running 100 Octane early in the war and eventually got to 150 Octane (though I don't think they used that in the Pacific, not sure).

A6M had many weaknesses, first was the Japanese expectation that maneuverability in the slow envelop was more important than anything else. It was a horribly difficult aircraft to get to maneuver at any speed over 250 mph. The Japanese dictated very low wing loading (one of the many reasons its range was so impressive) due to their lack of engine options, which was a distinct advantage in reducing stall speed (their obsession with slow flight characteristics), landing on an aircraft carrier, dog fighting, etc. In the end, the greatest weakness of the Zero was its design allowed for almost no significant upgrades. Of all the major combat aircraft of the war, the ability to upgrade against new threats was the defining attribute of a successful design. The Zero was brilliant for about 6 months, after that it was outclassed by just about every fighter aircraft the allies put up. Before the North Australian Air War (the Darwin campaign), the Zero had a 12 to 1 kill ratio advantage. Just before Coral Sea, the Americans and Australians flying the P40E had a 1 to 1 kill ratio against the Zero. The last true hurrah of the Zero in kill ratio was against the obsolete torpedo bombers launched off Midway and the Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet. Against the F4F in the same battle, Thatch's 6 fighters achieved a 3 to 1, and US fighters of all types never really fell below a 1 to 1 for the rest of 1942. After that, it was lights out for the Zero. Interesting design, but very limited options for improvement, and for a long war it was incredibly substandard.

When I was child I liked BF109 and other German planes; but later (when I constructed a balsa model zero) I learn to appreciate its beauty lines and harmony of it's structure. For me the zero is one of the top planes of his time; well proved in fights and feared by adversaries.

@GETEHR WOLF It made sense; the British were used to out-turning any German fighter they went up against, whether in the Hurricane or the Spitfire. Even a veteran pilot would expect to out-turn any plane he faced. Then they got out-turned by the most min/maxed plane of the war in terms of turning. Lesson learned (should have listened).

The flying tigers were blowing them out of the sky in china in P40s. Before Pearl Harbor. The zero had nothing to protect the pilot thats why it wad so maneuverable. Thats one reason japan lost the war, all of their best pilots we're gone by 1944 maybe earlyer.

Such a joy to see these restored warbirds. The Wildcat's ability to combat the Zero successfully was due more to the Thatch Weave tactic, where a pair of Wildcats covered each other's six with turning maneuvers.

My grandfather worked on Wildcats for a short time in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. The official British designation of Martlet wasn't used in his unit. They were always called Wildcats. He loved them. He was an airframe rigger based at the deep repair yard at Royal Navy Air Station Coimbatore in India during the struggle against the Imperial Japanese. He told me that Wildcats were as tough as old boots and they could take a proper beating due to being built tough. He also worked on Corsairs (his favourite), Seafires and Swordfish during his stint in the mob.

When the Wildcat does a loop it will always come out of it at a lower altitude then when it started. When a Zero does a loop it can finish at a higher altitude then when it started. And remember a turn is really just a loop done sideways.

Whoa there pal, It would be a very boring demonstration is they were actually fighting at a high altitude where the wildcat may have stood a chance. People on the ground couldn't see anything. And the airplane was rebuilt in America, so of course an American is going to be flying it. He knows shit about dog fighting. And there was no "fix" because it wasn't a real fight, of course the zero could win that battle if he wanted to. It's a very rare aircraft so its not going going to be stressed with a lot of gs or the possibility of it stalling/crashing especially over a crowd of people. If the demonstration was done in Japan with Japanese pilots, I'm sure the zero would have been on the tail of wildcat, and guess what, no one would give a shit.

the reason the zero was expendable was the pilots. they all died during the course of the war because they were always placed on the front line. the IJN had more skilled aces than the USN, including saburo sakai, if they were alive, they would not be easy prey. the zero could escape a BNZ and put itself behind any hellcat aircraft in a turnfight, its 20mm guns, which have been upgraded for more ammo and its engine which has been upgraded to reach 570km/h could wreak havoc for the hellcat and any other aircraft. unfortunately it was a target shot during the finale as it was flown by poorly trained university pilots

At that altitude and at those speeds the F4F Wildcat would've been dogmeat. The Wildcat had a significant high-altitude advantage and far superior high-speed maneuverability and dive performance. Boom and zoom and never turn with a zero at less than 250 mph. By Guadalcanal US Navy and Marine pilots had it all down to a science.

The A6M Zero was a good fighter at the beginning of WW2 and was definitely a lethal threat in the hands of the right pilot. Obviously, there were several design flaws that proved to be fatal in combat. The fact that it didn't have self sealing fuel tanks meant that if it took a hit in the right place, it was lights out. When the Allies captured an intact Zero and flight tested the hell out of it, it was discovered that it had trouble with a diving right turn and got into serious trouble. As soon as this was discovered and word got out, this was exploited heavily and that pretty much devastated the Zero's inventory.

One of Japan's leading aces met his end with the first meeting of an F6F. If it assumed he thought it was an F4F, he tried to stall it and hammerhead for a kill. He had done this tactic many times before... Unfortunately the F6F kept climbing and shot him down.

The only way the Wildcat could consistently engage and defeat the Zero was using two plane teams and using the Thatch Weave. The Zero was an agile dog fighter but was a paper tiger. It could take very little punishment because it had no armor or self sealing fuel tanks. We discovered its weaknesses when we recovered an example of the Zero in the Aleutians. Later in the war, the Japanese made some very good fighters such as the ‘Frank’ , ‘Tony’ and the ‘ George’ but a shortage of skilled pilots handicapped them. My dad used to call the early Japanese pilots China Vets and said they were excellent pilots but losses thinned their ranks quickly and their replacements were no match for the highly trained Americans.

@Anonymous Anonymous Technically, in the price range of running these things these days i bet you could cut new valve seats that require little or no lead, and a re-tune should fix the octane issue but that 200 knot limit is a shame. Not that i'd ever advocate for them to take risks with these birds. They're just too valuable. Maybe in the future when 3d printing is more advanced, we can have new engines and other cast parts printed for them, or perhaps someone will just start making new replicas.

@Anonymous Anonymous yeah i just mentioned the seats as in a leaded engine, using unleaded (or less leaded in this case) tends to burn them up pretty quick. Other than that, it's absolutely a flame front issue, i agree but adjusting the fueling to slowdown and stabilize the burn and/or retarding the ignition timing can both help with detonation and pre-ignition. (both would probably sacrifice performance if there are no other modifications made but that's a small price to pay to keep the engine happy)

The best dog fighter may have been the Brewster Buffalo. We Americans gelded it by adding weight in the form of armor and self sealing gas tanks so it couldn't survive against the Zero. But the Finns flew them as they came from the factory and one of them has the record of the most enemy planes shot down by a single plane. Colonel 'Pappy' Boyington made a crack about the Buffalo by saying that it could 'do a loop in a phone booth'. For the younger generation, a phone booth was a very tine closet containing a phone and standing room for one. The Buffalo was probably the last American dog fighter we ever built. But dog fighting was a WWI tactic and we used a tactic of hit and run with superior fire power and survivability.

Altitude or the Thach Weave was the only defense the Wildcat had against the Zero. The Hellcat on the other hand was absolute hell to the Zero. It was much faster, could out climb a Zero and when it comes to two skilled, evenly matched pilots going up against each other, speed usually wins. Zeros were tinsely, tin cans with no armor. Whereas a Hellcat could take some punishment, a burst or two of 50 cal was about all it took to vaporize a Zero. One pass, haul ass...

If a Zero did get on an F6F's 6 o'clock, the Hellcat pilot would either dive, climb or roll to escape. Zero's could not match the F6F in those maneuvers.

I’ve been in two. A nice sport plane, but kindling in combat, restricted roll, no dive, and NO RADIO... only Morse code originally. Plus it’s built for a pilot that’s 5’3” and my head literally stuck out ABOVE the canopy. HowEVER, I HIGHLY recommend the Yak 9... ideal for a 6’ pilot, and without the weight of all those guns it’s a fab rocket ship.

Everyone knows why zeros were superior to a point. No armor means great thrust to weigh ratio. Barely any armor was added. American planes were typically heavy literally doing the opposite of what the japanese did. However japanese planes couldnt go too fast as their gears would literally close ok themselves and would either lose its agility or not be able to move at all. And if course were easy to shoot down so long as you are not dog fighting them and are using anti air cannons. It was in our favor because they lost a lot of skilled pilots and were sending out young recruits who have never flown a plane before. I'd still say the zero is a scary plant to dog fight.

That's a wildcat not a hellcat. In real life, unless the wildcat pilot bounced that zero and immediately got his guns on him, here's how that dogfight would probably go; the zero pilot baits the wildcat by going into a climb staying just out of range of the wildcat's guns, waiting for the wildcat to stall. If the wildcat pilot doesn't take the bait, he will break off pursuit and let the zero go. If he takes the bait, then he will follow the zero and eventually stall, in which case the zero pilot get's on his tail and shoots him down. On the other hand, in a dogfight between a hellcat and a zero, the hellcat pilot baits the zero by following him into the zero's climb and then waits for the zero to stall instead, and then shoots him down. The hellcat was superior to the the wildcat and the zero which is why it (along with the Corsair) was a real war winner in the pacific.

You know nothing. It depends on their initial energy entering into a dogfight. It depends who sees first. It depends on what altitude/speed. US planes will dive out of a dogfight, run, climb back up far away, then boom and zoom the zeroes. Climbing with zero is still not recommended if they start with the same energy. Zero is very light and maneuverable at low speed a good zero pilot will start to "dance" as the hellcat climbs and lose speed b/c of its maneuverability advantage(hellcat looses all of its advantage at low speeds). Later US tactics avoids going slow and always go for a boom and zoom so your scenario is absolutely unlikely. History's version is bullshit, if it truly happened then probably the hellcat got the energy advantage from the start and since the zero pilot have no intel about the new f6f.(first glance it still looks like f4f)

FroztiProductions As said above, it's just an effect to mimic damage/engine trouble. All it is is a particular oil that, when mixed with the hot exhaust of the engine, evaporates and makes smoke. The Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, Snowbirds, Red Arrows, etc. use the same smoke effect, but for different purposes.

@@lamella64 They usually have an injection system that introduces paraffin, or some combusible oil, into the hot exhaust gases, to emulate a bullet/tracer bullet-damaged engine or the like. Not exactly realistic, but the dramatic intentions were there for visual purposes..

Unlike american or german aircraft, Zero design had no sealing tank and pilot armor, so Zero weight could be light enough to achive very great aerobatic performance in slow speed dogfight and long range strike. It was very hard for brits and american pilot to take down Zero in the first years of WW2, but when you shoot down Zero it mean you shoot down "Zero + kill pilot" because zero pilot don't have any armor to protect them, Zero design makes japanese losing experience pilot quicker than the german, british and american which is lead to the japanese defeat(earlier) "When you shoot down german aircraft you only shoot down the aircraft but the pilot would survive to fight another day so there is always a better chance for experience german pilot to achieve Ace than japanese pilot"

It's just a show. Probably roughly choreographed. The blonde pilot in the Zero should have wore a dark brown or black pilot's cap with the bandana over that. I don't think there were very many blonde Imperial Japanese pilots. :) Looks like Wildcat (FM-2) banks left and right a little, Zero follows for a couple passes. Then they change positions for a few more passes with the Zero running the smoke system on and off to simulate having its engine hit by gunfire. Opposite of the way it would likely go. Only at the end do we see a demonstration of the Zero's tight turn ability. It got around the corner pretty quickly there. I'd like to see something very realistically choreographed with 2-vs-2... two Zero's and two FM-2 Wildcats (unless there are two FM-1's or F4F's available). Something that clearly shows the Zero's superior turn rate/radius and a tactic by the Wildcats that might counter it. All without overstressing these old aircraft and their engines, of course. Not sure if they can even do it in a US airshow environment due to safety rules. Might have to be done a few thousand feet up.
