@@abrqzxsure, sure but most likely the government was not interested in any urban planning or we don't have the talent to do so. Remember during this time American influence is very high to the point we look down on other countries. Japan and Europe had finished rebuilding after WW2 and we didn't bat an eye to them because we think that the US is the only country that's the best at everything -- how truly false was that. We didn't look for any inspiration from other countries besides the US we think their system would be best for us, when in reality we should have looked for a system that is suited for the Philippines in urban planning and development. It was our people's short sightedness for the sake of temporary satisfaction without thinking the long term

@@hua_tetsu_cat because the US is the wealthiest and powerful country back then and until today. Europe back then was fully destroyed by the Nazis and Southeast and Eastern Asia were destroyed by the Japanese Imperial Army so saan tayo magbabase ng urban planning? Your argument is so misleading and dumb at the same time. 21 years naging pangulo si Marcos tapos kapag nakita mo ang records ng government niya in terms of nation building and economic plan, naka focused lahat yung budget for martial law kaya buong 21 years na pangulo siya wala talagang halos infrastructure improvements kaya nga even Singaporeans knows na Marcos Sr. is a really really bad dictator. Hindi naman Pilipinas ang nagtawag saatin noon na Sick Man of Asia kundi mga neighboring countries din natin kasi on track tayo noon sa one of the wealthiest countries in the year 2000 pero anong nangyari noong 1970s panahon ni Marcos Sr. wala nga siyang economic plan, sana na gets mo yan. Even Singaporeans pinagtatawanan kayong mga DDS/BBM fans kasi alam ng Singaporeans history ng Pilipinas more than y’all fanatics 😆

Speaking as the U.S.-born child of Filipino immigrants, I wish the Philippines was like this today! This is the era my parents grew up in, and I didn't believe them when they said it used to be a prosperous, clean, and advanced country until I saw footage like this. I will be the first to say that I grew up a bit spoiled as a middle class kid in a first world country, and so visiting the Philippines from the 90s onward was never a great experience for me. If it had continued in this trajectory instead of falling to corrupt leaders, I have no doubt it would have been ahead of Japan and South Korea in first world status. So sad at what it has become.

Great video of old Manila and the Philippines. Thanks for sharing! Just can't help commenting on the narrator saying that the country "...was once the 'Island jungle' of the Philippines." In reality though, PH during the Spanish time was already known around the world as the Pearl of the Orient. The Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario (founded in 1611), now the University of Santo Tomas, was even older than the oldest university in the US (Harvard University, 1636). But even before the Spaniards came, the Rajahs, the Sultans, Lakans, and Datus of Sulu, Visayas, and Lusong were already trading with China, Japan, Arabia, India, Champa, Siam, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and others.

Nothing wrong with jeepney transportation if only they had designated stops. No weaving in and out of traffic to get to the next passengers ahead of another jeepney. No stopping to drop off passengers anywhere along the way, either.

Jeepneys were supposed to be a stopgap measure after the tranvia rail system were destroyed by the Japanese. But, because of the fact that the infrastructure is dismantled beyond repair, Manila became highly depended on automobile transportation. This leads to road projects to expand more further, in favor for the automobiles. However, the more roads are built for cars, then the city gets more traffic than it gets. Not surprising, Manila became the city of traffic that will forever curse average commuters.

@@phoenix5054 geez you could have stated your opinion on the matter without attacking… And sure they have more personalities now but they do be looking poor.. “King of the roads” my ass they be doing whatever in the streets causing traffic by stopping wherever to pick up people, no “jeeps stops” unlike other countries who have buses who do P2P stops and not the Edsa carousel bcs that’s a questionable choice making in the middle of the road… No LED panels to show where they go. Heck even the modern jeepneys are ugly they are just mini buses with aircon, could have implemented normal big buses and I don’t mean “coaches”, but big p2p buses. Philippines car centric mind is the worse should have continued with the Spanish urban planning. I’ll just stop here talking about infrastructure, transportation and urban planning for the Philippines is not worth it

Well the Philippines doesn't have the adequate quality of discipline. I was there last year coming from Korea to Philippines, there's a lot of improvements in the metropolitan but I think the Philippines government they have to travel all of over the country to make sure they have the same as well as in the metro manila. Other parts of the Philippines are dirty even the metro manila area. I am korean/singaporean and now I am an American. The Philippines has a lot to catch up which it's comes to traffic discipline. The PHILIPPINES is a beautiful country and very nice people.

All I know is that Manila was intended to have urban design as it was designed by an American City planner that designed Chicago it is just that it was the 2nd most bombed City in WWII after Warsaw.. Western countries gave more funds to Japan and other countries to rebuild. The Philippines got less so the former architecture and the railways that were already there but was bombed was not rebuilt because of that lack of funds. The 60s it still had those buildings but the mentality at the time made people want to demolish old ruins to make way for new style buildings which I think is a short sighted thing to do. Then Marshall Law happened, Marcos ousted and corruption increased. People from other provinces flooded the capital making it more crowded because for decades that’s where most of the jobs are. Those from the poorest areas were then bought by politicians and they squattered shanty houses everywhere. What happened in Manila is basically a tragedy. It will only be clean if you de populated it, focus on other cities and make a new capital somewhere. I really wish they made another Philippine city the capital because Manila is really not the best city to see first when you enter the country.
