Rare Nakamichi 1000P DAC, 1000MB CD changer along with the 1000 Digital Audio Tape(DAT) deck. Nakamichi produced some amazing digital products although they were best known for their cassette tape decks. Each unit is built like a tank. All-copper plated chassis with thick aluminum cases. I show each unit on the test bench as well as hooked together making music. At more then $11,000 in the late 80's these were very high end pieces of audio equipment.

Amazing since my very child hood. Nakamichi was every expensive and lucrative in all Hi end stereo magazines since then. At that time , it was not possible to see anything under the hood, but today when I see through your channel in KZbin it makes sense why they were so expensive and what actually real craftsman ships are.

I was in Japan in 1989 and the hi-end stereo shops were fun to visit, very typical of what the luxury units of the day looked like. Nakamichi has always been one of my favorites, they loved to push the current tech and always had some mechanical parts that were just amazing and fun to use. I always wanted to get a Dragon but it was just a bit out of my pay grade as an E4 in the USMC at the time. I have a bunch of Japan-exclusive CD's many with the original "banned" artwork, CD stores were amazing too, only a single copy of any album would be on the shelves, everything in perfect order, if you buy out a section it will be quickly restocked as if you were never there, 4 floors of CD's it was just overwhelming.

just fixed one of these today, what I found is that the drive motors that connect to the reels are direct drive motors, have a separate PCB, with those dreaded SMD capacitors, and they will leak. the acid will damage the solder connections and the resistors on the board. if you have one of these, best to inspect this and replace the 6 10uF 35V caps with SMD caps, 1206 10uF 25V. that will work.

Another great, well-produced video. I owned a basic 2-head Nak cassette deck from 1982. Built like a tank, even for that budget model. About electro caps ... you can test them in-circuit with a cheap ESR meter. If they're within range, no real need to spend on new. Also, for vintage equip that's been in storage, you can bring equip. up slowly on variac and allow the caps to "re-form". Unless you're going to sell the units as rebuilt, the std bench tests and audio tests will serve as guide for re-capping (as needed).

Nice, I gotta agree the build quality on those pieces is incredible. You know back in that era I had seriously considered getting a digital tape rig but the DAT decks never came down in price. IIRC the last time I considered buying one they were still in the $1,200 range and up and I thought that too high. My Nakamichi cassette deck (a humble BX-100) was still working well and sounded great so I just waited. I figured at the time that something else was going to come down the pike and make DAT obsolete and eventually it did in the form of rewritable cd's.
@vintageaudioaddict

No expense was spared at Nakamichi to engineer and build units like this. It's hard to imagine that Nakamichi thought these would sell well because of the price tag. If you were a person into the DAT format back in the day you could buy several Sony's or whatever brand of DAT unit for the price of this one. They must of thought that there were enough customers out there but as it turned out they didn't sell very many units.

I have a thing for vintage DACs, top of the line vintage DACs will still stand up to modern DACs playing at the same but depth and sampling rate. I have a Linn Numerik, I’d take it over any sub £1000 DAC I’ve heard, it just sounds right to my ears.

☹️.... As all of your workshop photos were done in a slideshow, you didn’t video the CD player in operation with the lit/cover/top panel removed, the mechanism; loading/unloading, storing and swapping disks. Same thing with the DAT/C recorder - operation with the front removed, you talked about seeing it but showed us a static slide. At least it has a side window to see the tape loading and the playing/recording drum spinning (that I do like, along with the door window 🙂) despite it being weirdly on its side. 😁

Sir, with reference to the loading speed of the Nakamichi 1000 DAT tape deck. Was it not the case that the Nakamichi F.A.S.T. system did not completely "unwrap" the tape from around the playback/record head? This was unlike other manufacturers machines e.g. Philips (who developed DAT in Europe). Hence particular indexed segments of the tape could be accessed easily and quickly. These Nakamichi digital producers are exceptional. Thank you for your dedication to vintage audio equipment. Keep up your good works!
