As a movie reviewer on KZbin once said, "Sometimes I miss the '80's so much, I could cry".

Absolutely fabulous time! This is one example of what life in the 80's was like. It was definitely a good time!👍

My dad used to take me to Buzz Hill starting in 88 all the way until they took it away. I was born in 87. I remember being hog-tied by his friend and hung upside down in a tree one year. Memories that ill never forget.

I had the 1986 race on tape, the one where race 1 won it in the corsair, it was my favourite tape to play when drunk, the house used to shake from the volume I played it and then I lost it moving house, I still miss it but thanks to utube for the reminder

An awesome chronicle of the days before the insurance men and attorneys got involved. I miss the front straight. Haircut Hill or as my friends called it, Mr. Bill's Pylon Club. See you soon Mr. Ward.

Interesting on how loud the P-38's prop noise was engine noise is almost inaudible but when it's at that power setting those 11 foot 6 inch prop tips really go supersonic making it one of the loudest planes in this vid.

Ah the memories this video brings back. More than once we thought we may be a bit too close to the action but we always came back for more until the insurance guys got wind of it. BTW- the film maker is John Ward not Tom. Thanks John!

I was right there with this guy's every year. EXCEPT 1986, until about 99 when I left Reno, finally!! Just in time to miss Dago Red do 507 mph laps! Dwight Carlton and his posse. Terry Jackson and mine. Bill Ford. Just a second post to say to check out the video Dago Red Sept 12, 2003. No fly over but a great ride in the cockpit for a while race. I can't see where his wings were level to the ground once. But I love this 80s video. 2013 was a long wait and I just saw it today, 2022.

My Dad and I were there in '86, still have my credentials and all the pics and negatives. My Dad was at Cleveland 46-49 and prewar as a kid, so it closed the loop for him. Saw and chatted with Kip Mone. The Yak-11 with the 2800 wasn't there that year I've always regretted not seeing that one. We won quite a bit playing dice in the Reno Ramada casino, damn near payed for the whole trip. Threw seven straight passes before the house closed the table. CMW🤠

Excellent. I wish I could have experienced this... but I got some pretty good experiences. Like flying with Bill Destefani in Mangia Pane (pre-Strega) in formation with Dreadnought and Sumthin Else at a mock air race at Madera Gathering of Warbirds. 400mph low pass down in the grass next to the runway. Good fun... those were the days.

There was a large crew of folks up on "the corner" every year. With me were Mark and Rob Glanville and Ben and Lee Jensen and others. We camped on that spot during race week from 1983 to 1988 and then the air race authority got control of the land and booted us off because of insurance issues and we became fence liners. We have our own videos and others of almost every year from 1985 to 2022.

Does RARA still allow you to view from Cheapskate Ridge?
@johnward1191 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Homes were built on the ridge area and there are reportedly air race parties held on the ridge at those homes. The race course has been shortened to eliminate flyovers of those homes. But there are still folks dug down in the brush with video cameras.

Originally recorded 1in 1986-87 with a JVC camera and portable vcr while standing on the top of my Toyota pickup truck camper shell. Edited for you tube by a friend and then released by another air race fan after the 2011 air race disaster. b&w viewfinder with a 6 to 1 zoom. Lefty cleared the top of my head by 10 feet with his starboard prop. All settings on the original camera were manual, no autofocus or image stabilization available in those days.
