A crossing like this where the gates are normally down would definitely benefit from using the gates that have the sprung feet at the far end to avoid them bending over time.

Definitely seems that way - there's been quite a lot of electrification going on around the Great Western Main Line and surrounding lines.

Not seen one like this before!So after pressing plunger, basically the gates stay shut until all is clear and then alarm and lights come on once you're across.What happens if there's a train due just after you start to cross?Does it work like a normal level crossing then?

It pretty much works in the same way as a normal manually-controlled crossing as it's interlocked with signals. The barriers will only be raised on request, and even then will only be raised if raising them (setting the nearest signals to danger) won't affect the passage of trains. This kind's usually lowered again either by a timer or manually by the signaller as soon as it's clear.

On this type of crossing (the ones that stay closed unless someone is using the crossing), the lights are off when the crossing is closed
