What you see here on the wings are what's called the Javelin aux tanks. They add 100gal in total (50gal per side) to the 384gal already in the wings, increasing total capacity to 484gals. This makes this plane a great long range performer. Burning about 58gal/hr up high, it has an endurance off more than 8+hrs. At a speed of around 270-280kts (if it has -10 engines), this plane can go more than 2000nm direct. That's enough to cross the Atlantic from W Ireland to New Foundland direct. The later Jetprop models (840, 900, 980, 1000) had that capacity inside the wing with no need for aux tanks. They have greater wingspan to fit the fuel.
@N34RT3 жыл бұрын
When I first "went to school" on the Turbo Commander (December 1997), the instructors addressed the issue of these "slipper aux. tanks". They told the class because of the "extra drag", they added extra range "only at high altitudes" [mid- to upper 20's] and if you "slowed your cruise airspeeds by 20-30 knots."

The Garrett Moan! Love it. Very loud in person. The TPE331 gave a performance advantage to the aircraft that could make best use of the residual thrust from the engine, mostly, the Mitsubishi MU-2, but all got a boost.

Here in Australia the shrike was used as a geophysical survey aircraft by several companies back in the 90's and early 2000's. Until recently there was a decommissioned one sitting outside the hanger of one of the survey companies based here but I think it's gone now, i remember back in my early days in the industry the older guys would all say they are the best aircraft for the job, although now Cessna 208 grand caravans and Pacific Aerospace PAC750's are generally the aircraft that's used mostly.

Friend of our family had one of these. He was very successful in the lumber and home construction industry. He went bust in 2008 and had to sell the plane. Some shady looking characters bought the plane, no financing. We later heard it ended up in AZ and the entire interior was gutted, and all the avionics were all upgraded. It's last known flight plan was south.....

Back in the 80s in Firebaugh California, my boss Dick Telles of Telles Ranch had Turbo Commander living in the small town you could hear him land at night. I can still hear those turbo props when the pilots would put the plane in reverse trust to slow down the plane!

My best friend flew one of these for a few years. One time the landing gear failed to deploy. He landed that airplane on the grass next to the asphalt runway without doing the aircraft any damage. I flew a 690A with "stock" -5 engines for almost 3 years (550 hours in type). Want me to tell you several things the pilot did wrong? (or can you spot them?)
@hubriswonk3 жыл бұрын
I noticed what I think was over controlling the rudder, but I would like to know what he needed to improve on. I am not a pilot but I am a skydiver.
@N34RT3 жыл бұрын
@@hubriswonk , not really - the Turbo Commanders' nosewheel steering is controlled through the first few degrees of "brake pedal movement" on each rudder pedal. In the takeoff roll as you transition from "nosewheel steering" to full rudder authority, it's normal to see a lot of rudder movements. What I was asking in my first question above was referring to doing a "power check on both engines" prior to break release WITHOUT the nosewheel centered - this puts tremendous "sideloads" on the nosewheel tire, rim, and nosegear assembly - the weakest link in the aircraft's landing gear. I also think he "over-controlled" with the rudder about 5 seconds prior to rotation, but not knowing the winds at the time, that could have been a reaction to a sudden gust of crosswind.

Old Post...but Commander 690s do not use flaps on takeoff. I fly one here in the US. There is no aerodynamic benefit to takeoff flaps so they designed it to not use them for takeoff.
@Byrdflyr4 жыл бұрын
@@davidwright2867 So flaps add drag, but no lift? Or, flaps add lift and drag, but don't shorten the T/O roll, or reduce T/O speed? Aerodynamically, I'm struggling to understand that design.
@richschindler87317 жыл бұрын
Great video. To me it looked like that pilot used zero degrees of flaps for take off. Now I've never flown a commander but I do have over 20k of flight time in all sorts of aircraft. So just wondering if it's a commander thing or what. If he had like ten thousand feet of runway that would make a difference as well, but it didn't look as if he did. Any clarification?
@griffinkellar3987 жыл бұрын
Standard take off configuration is no flaps. At max gross you'll be airborne a little over 3,000 feet.
@happysawfish6 жыл бұрын
10 degrees of Flaps probably would have helped! Did you see him rotate abruptly and then settle back down? He lowered the nose and again it wanted to settle back toward mother earth. Probably rotated too soon given the upcoming treeline in view, and Bern density altitude. The hill looks close, although the telephoto lens on the camera no doubt distorts the relative distance.

@geeoh4808 жыл бұрын
Let me begin with pilot technique, very sloppy in the take-off roll, he needs to get some Twin Commander simulator time at best. The slipper tanks are made by Javelin and were an STC, but no longer available, they increase fuel from 389 gallons to 474 for the 690B, but considering drag and weight consideration, not really worth the effort. RVSM will get you to FL310 in the 980 with the Dash 10's at 300 knots, but you want the improved 6.2 pressurization. Range numbers for the 980 are 1550 NM..474 gallons of Jet-A..
@wayneelliott24627 жыл бұрын
The twin commander range are renowned for the difficulty in ground control below 40 knots, the rudder is not connected to the nose wheel, you steer using the top portion of the peddles which operates the hydraulic movement of the nose wheel until around 40 knots where you have sufficient airflow for positive rudder control, difficult to master, sim time will not help even if you could find a sim, which is a very big if, as sims were not programmed for realistic ground movement. They are a great aircraft though! especially when the steering method is mastered, comes with real time practice.
@jayc42836 жыл бұрын
Stephen, you are a fuckwit
@tomginsberg1536 жыл бұрын
In my opinon Wayne Elliot is correct. Having been a mechanic for many years, flown and also written lots of STCs for the Aero Commander series 500B, 500S, 680 and 690 I must say ground handling at slow speeds is a knack and takes time to learn. I takes anticipation as well as finesse on rudder toe controls. That is for a plane with everything tight on the nose gear. These planes are getting old and parts are difficult to get. The hydraulic cylinder attached to the nose gear is actually attached to a slip collar called the "steering collar". It rides in a precise groove around the nose gear casting. This in turn has the scissor links attached to it which then go down to turn the nose wheel yoke when the cylinder applies pressure in either direction. This simply means there are a lot of places for slop to rear it's ugly head and make the ground handling even worse. I do not think any two Aero or Turbo Commanders handle exactly alike. I could go into this deeper but i'm getting tired of running my fingers.
