I have one of these in a Burgundy Exterior color.. and a tan interior in 1/18. This.. is one of my cars where.. I looked n looked n looked at it and decided I dont like it. (Trying to figure out.. why.) Its not glamourous looking. Its not ornate like a Silver Shadow.. its a 70s Rolls. I still have problems saying the name correctly. When I finally turned around.. and found it and bought it.. it is just... right. its Cam-ar-gue. I keep switching the "r" before the m = Car-ma-gue. P.S DAMN, Jay always gets it right. Great episode, it's so nice when things get handed down through the family. You know Pop Pop is looking down smiling not to mention the satisfaction his grandmother is feeling giving it to the right person who appreciates it and has put it back on the road. Being an RR/B guy and chairman of the RROC Modern car society, it's always a pleasure to see another great car on the show. This was a special treat with a wonderful story. For the record 150k in 76 is actually worth over 825K in today's money. I agree 100% to your comment. I never saw Jay being so agressively negative, and that in front of of the young proud owner. The Spectre plays no role here, we have seen it enough in the video some weekds ago, and there was made enough publicity.Pointless to compare. The Garage videos have quite often shown very crappy cars, that I would not even sit in, but Jay each time tried to be nice.Here he was not, throwing every minute another negative point on the Camargue, comparing it to some midlevel american cars of the time.Jaleous to not have one? Something went very wrong here, and if I was Donald, I would have shut down the filming and go home.And as the owner of the very last built RHD drive DCamargue,and by the way a very close friend to Paolo Martin, I would have gone home with my car , latest at the stupid comment on the fuel trap.I am profoundly concerned by this behaviour and it changes a bit my opinion on Jay. Really sorry
@JasonFlorida
@JasonFlorida 12 күн бұрын
I felt this was unusual for Jay to be so negative and actually surprised. I'm not sure when this was filmed but I have to give Jay the benefit of the doubt... @@JasonFlorida I know all his trouble, and I am utterly sorry for that.But he always, without any exception, was nice to people,even terrible people sometimes, and on cars, and sometimes abolutely horrible ones as well. But here, he is simply nasty and mean,and he puts Donald in a position where he feels extremely uncomfortable, not to speak about the young owner, that in the car says suddenly"So you still hate it?".This is disrespectful from Jay, and if he hates the Camargue (I really do not car, I love mine), he should not make a show about it.And to show off his Spectre again was totally obsolete as well.

Imagine how intimidating the commission must have been. "We want a very modern looking coupe but we keep the 1920s grille, it must be elegant and have the size of a yacht with a high roof line. It's going to be by far the most expensive RR and car in the world, it's has to have two great rear seats and be all out British excellence, so we called you Italians". I think they did brilliant. the square shapes are so subtly not straight but rounded, the line between the hood an fender and how that ends/starts in the head lights "block", the wheel flares are simply perfection. If I only had a front fender I would put that on a pedestal in my home. .

What I found striking is the hood height on the Spectre when Donald was standing next to it. It’s nearly at chest level vs. Camargue is slightly below hip level. Our cars today have become so large that it makes no sense. There is something to be said about small proportions that are executed well in design, I think the tighter overall proportions show off the design cues better. That’s why I think car makers like Porsche were genius to maintain the silhouette of the 911, even though the modern 911 is larger it still shows off its design cues.

The Everflex (vinyl) roof was not specified as standard on Camargue.

It was standard on the Silver Wraith II, and an option on the Silver Shadow Ii, so would have been available as an option for later Camargues.

There are few things better in the material life than owning things that have a story, particularly when the story is about a family member. I know some of the pieces we own are very valuable, which adds to the interest sometimes but the idea of something making it unique was the real treat. My family loved telling me the tales and I have loved telling our kids the same things. The idea of trying to turn a profit and losing the item is beyond me.

The beautiful camargue was, at the time, very similar to Lady Penelope's FAB 1 Rolls Royce. Lady P's Rolls was even more extreme Camargue than the Real car. Thanks for this. cool video.

Wonderful! Thank you! I love watching the body floating above the imperfect pavement. Reminds me of my 1978 Delta 88, but I loved the room of my '72 Olds Ninety Eight... I could put my left foot into next week in that thing... this automobile is definitely the Cadillac of Rolls....😊

the doors were the same as a 77 olds niniety 8 regenacy . not a 1978 delta 88 88 had round fenders and the 98 was square design.

Sometimes being different and exclusive is a real good thing and this is a classic example of thinking outside the box and hitting a grand slam! I agree with others, just hearing Jay and Donald share stories and details on the history of the car and brand is a life lesson you just do not get anymore!! Thanks for a fantastic journey through time with a classic!!

My 94 Lincoln Towncar was the most comfortable car I've ever owned and most luxurious as well and I cannot help but see the essence on my Towncar in this RR with the slab sides, goes on forever long hood and the front "face" . The young man is most fortunate ...

The first car I owned that made me love cars was an '88 towncar. I was 18 and I bought in in 1999 for 3500$. Put wire wheels on it and it was my baby. Loved the way the brakes felt. Couldn't imagine driving a rolls. I've got a mustang today with 4 piston calipers, discs all around, still doesn't compare to the feel of the towncar's brakes.

I may be one of the few people who likes the Camargue. It's different and stylish in its own right. That's awesome that Ben kept the car in the family and has kept it going. I work near an old money area and I saw a Camargue on the road the other day. I was amazed to see such a rare car on the road. Way more interesting than seeing a new Lamborghini making noise.

About time the thoroughly misunderstood Camargue got some love in the 21st century! I really only took notice of them myself from a photo ad(in Autoweek I believe)for R-R dealer memorabilia which featured one shod with Vogue tyres: I was piloting a Lincoln Town Car with Vogues at the time. Have since learned about the Camargue's Pininfarina/Fiat design heritage. A most unique Crewe car!

What a wonderful family story and kudos and congratulations to Ben for his love, appreciation and enjoyment of owning and using this rare and iconic Rolls-Royce. The Carmargue has long been my favourite Rolls due to its rarity, exclusivity and bold Italian design. Absolutely loved this video and I wish Ben many, many years of enjoyment with this magnificent Rolls and truly special family heirloom!

What a great story and yes, the Camargue is not really Rolls Royce as some think of it, but it has grown on me significantly as I'm sure it has for many. Fun to watch Jay Leno backtracking, a viewer bonus. One of the Garage's best episodes and of course the chemistry between Jay and Donald is great. I am originally from Glasgow in Scotland (I live now in Dubai, where even a Spectre is nothing special) and often bemuse those witnessing a couple of fellow Scots 'warmly' greeting each other with such 'insults' often more cutting than Jays to Donald in language that would make a sailor blush. Just a great episode for so many reasons. Oh, and that car is off the charts in 'coolness' compared to a Mustang GT, what were you thinking uttering such nonsense, Jay?
