Not so "elementary," the collection of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia assembled by lifelong Holmes fan Glen Miranker includes rare editions, illustrations, and private notes and correspondence from the character's creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Correspondent Faith Salie visits the exhibition, "Sherlock Holmes in 221 Objects," at New York City's Grolier Club, to deduce the public's timeless fascination with the immortal detective.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

My personal favorite Holmes movies were with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

The part where she points out that the phrase “elementary my dear Watson“ never actually appears in any of Doyle’s work despite it being almost unanimous in opinion that it does, is just like the lines “Luke I am your father“ from Star Wars and “You like me. You really really like me” uttered by Sally Field upon accepting her Oscar in 1985. None of those lines were ever said. The way the human mind/memory works is fascinating.

And the most quoted line from the film Casablanca, "Play it again, Sam", was never said. It's truly amazing how many famous "quotes" aren't actually quotes at all.

@@JimiBurleigh Yes! That’s another great example. I would love to know what this dynamic is all about. It happens far too frequently and consistently for it to just be a coincidence.

I'll dispute his claim that holmes didn't wear the deer stalker. although not called that it , by it's appearance, appeared in six stories with the paget illustrations, always in the country. in town holmes usually wore a top hat or later a homburg in far more stories but it did make it into 6 of them.

Sherlock Holmes was based on one of Arthur Conan Doyle's lecturers at Edinburgh University, a Scotsman called Dr. Joseph Bell. If you're interested in the story, let me introduce you to "Scotland History Tours" presented by Bruce Fummey. A great storyteller, with a beautiful Scottish accent. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpPXkoyaibV-gbc

Bell was the source of sherlock's ability to tell much about a person at first glance, but as Mrs. Doyle pointed out Arthur based sherlock on himself-later in life doylel was repsonsible for several investigations that overturned miscarriages of justice and exposed fraudulent mediums.

Tryon, North Carolina was the actor William Gillette's home when he wasn't at his Connecticut castle. As the first actor to play Sherlock on stage (and a silent film,) he was and still is important to our little town. Having restored a house on land he owned it seemed only right to devote a space in the house to his career. I understand the Miranker's drive to collect Sherlock memorabilia since Gillette made him come to life on stage. BTW: the pipe he used on stage is in a local museum.

I grew up in Chester CT, across the river from Gillette's Castle. Spent may days there growing up and learned all about Sherlock Holmes and William Gillette. I look forward to visiting Tyron, NC.
