If I remember correctly, some of these new X-Men were characters Cockrum wanted to bring to the Legion of Super-Heroes and wasn't allowed to.

Hi youtube.com/@matt_likes_Comics, yes you are right. In 1973 Dave Cockrum was artist on Superboy & the Legion of Super-Heroes and created many new characters that were rejected. Ultimately he took some of them or elements over to the X-Men. Nightcrawler, was fully realised, whilst a green bird-girl with wings character called Quetzal was reimagined as Storm and the feral Wolverine, who predated Marvel's famous hero, with Cockrum's character looking very much like Legion's Timber Wolf. He was later repurposed as Fang, an analog to Timber Wolf when he created an entire analog group of the Legion, the Imperial Guard who first appeared in X-Men #107 (Oct. 1977).
