Atmospheric halos series part III.
The white arc is called parhelic circle. The bright fuzzy dot to the right on it is a 120°-parhelion. If you look carefully you can see two more arcs crossing the parhelic circle to the left and forming an "X". These are very rare Wegener arcs. All these phenomena are caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting the sunlight.

It's called a parhelic circle and is quite rare to see one. Usually you only see bits and pieces of it in the sky and it is very rare to see it complete. Nice time-lapse video!

They can be at any altitude so long as it's cold enough for them to be composed of ice crystals.

The ring around the Moon or Sun is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.

There is a free program called HaloSim that I downloaded awhile back. I had no idea what it was for, but now I can see it in real life video. Pretty complicated program, but its fun to mess around with.

I saw a similar thing when I was out in a field when I was 15 years old except it was like swirling snakes 2 or 3 of them about 50 feet above me and it made a tearing sound in the sky. I was scared to my wits. I ducked to the ground but I did not run away because I wanted to see if something more would happen. After about 15-20 seconds it was over. This happened in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands around 1985 where it's never cold.

Yeah it's ice. but it's ice particles high above the cloud layer that form the halos. It is quite a sight to see though. Sometimes on really cold days you'll see a double halo with the rings meeting in the sun and extending out to the sides.

I've seen sun and moon halos. The problem with this is, it's not moving. Your camera is in time-lapse. The sun would be moving. This leads me to believe the halo is actually an image formed by the lens of the camera. Or perhaps the shield surrounding the camera (as you see in many security cameras). as something white (clouds) pass over the area, the light reflecting off of the lens is more definable.

It's a sun halo. If you've ever seen a rainbow-colored ring around the moon, sun halos are formed in much the same way, refracting light in the ice clouds. Nice vid.

The clouds aren't forming in a ring. It's a layer of clouds passing overhead that refracts the sunlight into that shape.

They did move - they change shape accordingly to sun's altitude in the sky. There's a video about the simulations of halos here in youtube by the same uploader of this video - /watch?v=RxKlNa4gDOw&feature=relmfu , or you could check on atmospheric optics' website for more detailed explanations.

This is called a parhelic circle and goes through the sun. In this case the sun was behind the camera. A halo goes AROUND the sun. Good guess though.

It happens daily? Damn I want to go there sometimes! Well, I live in the tropics and these things were indeed not very common here - but they did happen several times. As for what I knew, that "glare" you talked about is a parhelic circle - try reading this atoptics.co.uk/halo/parcirc.htm I might not be the expert, but they are (I think). Halos are made from ice crystals, from clouds in the sky or diamond dust on the ground. So if clouds have the crystals, they could also make the halo...
@potkettle
@potkettle 15 жыл бұрын
It's not a sundog. A sundog is a specific type of halo, seen 22-30 degrees either side of the sun (depending on sun elevation). Mist and vapour are also not quite the same thing, though related. Mist is the condensed form of vapour. But it is the ice form of water causing these amazing halos. Whatever the science, they sure are beautiful :)

That 1st one wasn't clouds. The others were, but not the 1st. I'm not sure, but I think it was either God's mustache as he used the sky as a mirror to shave in, or it was con trail from an airliner distorted by the fish-eye lens.

Sun and Moon halos don't become more or less visible with clouds moving in. They are always there. Clouds tend to cover them up. I lived in northern Manitoba Canada for 10 years.This "rare" event happens almost daily in the winter there. I know what I'm talking about. This is a glare on the camera. Not a sun halo.
