Thank you for uploading this beautiful collection. NCV is / was my grand atthai, my mother's father's own sister. Originally from Irinjalakuda, Trichur district she grew up in a humble background. Thank you all for your kind comments. Please do not compare all these great singers as they are all avatars of some gandharvas, so just enjoy their talent. Nagapattinam Chandrasekhara Ayyar Vasanthakokilam (NCV) was an extraordinarily gifted singer better than MS in those times. She was our next door neighbor in Gopalapuram, Madras during 1947-48 and we used to listen everyday to her rehearsals flowing through the walls for more than a year. Gifted with a mellifluous voice rendering wonderful Gamakas she was an absolute delight to hear. Such a great singer was plucked away at the prime of her career at the age of 31. Now in my eighties I am reliving her music through these recordings. Thanks for uploading these inimitable collections.

She died in November 1951 at the age of 31because of tuberculosis. There were not that effective medicines in those days. Unlike MS her married life was also not that great. May be she is entertaining the Gods with her wonderful music.

Thank you, Sir. I stand corrected. Many years ago, somebody, I do not recollect who, mentioned that she was given some slow poison. I cherish the melodious voice of NC Vasanthagokilam. It sounds divine to me.

+Venkataraman S NCV was a very private person. She was also frail but her voice was superb. After listening to female singers for more than 70 years, I am yet to hear a voice similar to hers. We moved away from Gopalpuram in 1949 and we used to hear her quite often on All India Radio (AIR) on their 1.5 hour Kutcher times on Saturdays. We were eagerly looking forward to her Kutcheri on Saturday November 4, 1951 evening when an announcement came over the AIR in Tamil, " We deeply regret to announce that Vasanthakokialm passed away". The time slot was filled with some other music. We later learnt that she had died the Wednesday before on Nov 1. 1951.

NCV is my favourite singer. She originally belonged to Nagapattinam whupichbis birth place too. Last time I heard her was in Kumbakonam I was lucky to hear her and famous violinist was Rajamanickam Pillai way back in 1948-49. I have heard her also in purandaradas music festival at R.Puram near Ratna sabapathibtemple hall. My favourite song sung by maye thumayahi. With her voice at highest octave

The greatness of one person need not belittle that of another. Can’t understand why people have the pathological need to compare this great legend in her own right with MS Amma. All said and done, God willed that even in devotional chanting, it was to MS Amma’s Suprabhatam that millions wake up in the morning -to this day, almost two decades after her death. We only belittle ourselves by this unnecessary comparison of all time great legends.

NCV was a genius like MKT can go to any Swara from anywhere. Actually MD and others would have faded to second or third position if she had lived to the glory. Singing with MKT Bhaghavatar was the pinnacle as there was or never will be a Carnatic musician of MKT. and to sing with him she needed to be another genius. MS never wanted to face the music of MKT. being influential she worked her fame through solitary filming like Meera ect. But the purity of NCV could never be reached. Like flute Mali. Nadaswaram of Rajarathnam MKT vocal she stands on a separate pedestal.

Having lived in the diaspora , one has minimal experience with much of Karnaatic Music. In boyhood, however, i heard a couple of her 78 rpm records ; these rare songs of the inimitable NCV immediately stimulated my interest. In the intervening seven or more decades , one finds she's been generally overlooked --- to our detriment. How fulfilling this revived presentation is !

Today I have read ODE NIGHTINGALE OF 1940 in TOI Dt 23.9.2021. on Great Soul NCV. God took away her life when she was just 32. The voice is as better as Smt MS. MS Amma had followed the footprints of NCV . Great voice.

My grandparents and parents cared for her, talked about her during her life time and for decades after her untimely demise. Destiny is often cruel to many. We notice the injustice of it, when 'Thalai Vidhi' affects the innocent, we are pained when that cruel destiny befalls on the innocent and talented. Her father tried his best to find suitable platform to make her talent grow. A Palghat brahmin, he felt that for his daughters singing career to grow, Palghat was not the place. Prior to taking her to Madras, he wanted to protect his young daughters reputation by getting her married. Unfortunately, her husband did not share her father's ambition for his daughter, because he thought that it was 'immoral' for a woman to sing in front of so many strangers. He strongly objected to her singing anywhere except in a Temple. She and her husband were separated, because he walked away from any manner of compromise. Sadly her father passed away too, too soon to see her career blossom. She was pretty much on her own in Madras. My elders felt she was heart broken, when the one mentor he had, a man from the Cine World, started controlling her, not for her own benefit, but his.. She may have died of TB, it seems. But she was a lonely person, without sincere support from someone she could trust.
