A Deep Dive into Corvette History: The Supercharged Fuel-Injected Marvel of the 1950s
Welcome back, Today, we’re diving into a remarkable piece of Corvette history-an early General Motors R&D masterpiece engineered in the late 1950s by none other than Zora Arkus-Duntov, the legendary "Father of the Corvette." This rare supercharged, fuel-injected Corvette represents a groundbreaking era in performance and innovation that shaped the future of American sports cars.
A Glimpse into the Visionary Era
The late 1950s were a transformative period for General Motors and the Corvette brand. At the heart of this evolution was Zora Arkus-Duntov, a man whose vision and engineering prowess elevated the Corvette from a stylish roadster to a legitimate contender in the world of high-performance sports cars. Among his many contributions, the development of a supercharged, fuel-injected Corvette stands out as a testament to his forward-thinking approach. This experimental model wasn’t just an engineering exercise; it was a glimpse into what American performance cars could achieve with the right blend of power, technology, and innovation.
From Prototype to Reality
Last week, we had the privilege of examining another piece of Corvette lore: Dave Crane’s 1960 prototype featuring a blown Rochester fuel-injection system. That car’s unique configuration and engineering ingenuity captivated us, offering a rare window into the experimentation that defined the Corvette’s early years.
Meeting Larry Hofer: The Keeper of Legends and the C8 8.1 Big Block Guy!
Our journey takes us to San Diego, where Larry Hofer’s Corvette shop has become a sanctuary for these iconic machines. Larry’s expertise and passion for preserving Corvette history make him the perfect guide to explore this rare supercharged, fuel-injected model. With his help, we’ll uncover the stories behind its creation, the challenges faced by the GM engineers of the era, and the innovations that set this car apart.
Capturing the Magic
Armed with a GoPro, we’re ready to document every moment of this experience. From the intricate details of the car’s engineering to the unmistakable growl of its supercharged engine, we aim to bring the essence of this Corvette to life. This isn’t just a history lesson; it’s an immersive journey into the past, where every rev of the engine and every conversation reveals a new layer of appreciation for what these cars represent.
Why It Matters
In a world dominated by modern performance cars with advanced electronics and turbocharged engines, it’s easy to overlook the raw ingenuity that defined the early days of automotive innovation. This Corvette is more than just a car; it’s a symbol of a bygone era where passion and creativity drove progress. By exploring its history and performance, we’re not just preserving a piece of the past-we’re celebrating the spirit of innovation that continues to inspire car enthusiasts today.
So buckle up, and get ready to experience the roar of history as we bring this rare gem to life. Stay tuned as we take you inside the world of Zora Arkus-Duntov’s visionary masterpiece and uncover the magic that made the Corvette an enduring icon of American automotive excellence.

4:03 on an engine that pulls, what, like 8-11 inches of vaccum jumps to 5psi that's a huge "freeing up" of horses

Nice. I love seeing the unusual stuff rather than the same old boring small blocks with a 4-barrel or a LS stuffed into something. It also shows what all three manufacturers in Detroit could have done if the bean counters and leadership had let them.

Oh what could have been... Only one of many backroom projects that GM was working on back then and few will ever be known. Thanks for documenting this. Awesome that they have found the pieces and duplicated it and you have told the story. I can't wait to see that big block C8 working properly as well.

I was going to leave a comment about the worm and sector steering, the "1937 Chevy pick up" chassis, king pin front end but this car has what mine never had and every old Vette needs:: rack and pinion, 4 real disc brakes, a real front suspension.
