Why does everyone always say Maynard's a dick? I don't see it. I've never recognized him as mean or insensitive. Maybe he seems a little socially inept and awkward at times (as well as aloof, but as everyone knows, he wants to maintain his privacy), but that doesn't make him a dick. Other than that, he's definitely joking around when he says shit here like "we're a little more successful at it". If you've followed Maynard's interviews and know him well enough through that, you know he'd never say something like that to be mean spirited.

No. Wrong. Maynard Keenan is positioned to the side and back of the stage purely for artistic and musical effect, it has nothing whatever to do with him not liking being around others. In the early years, Keenan was at the front of stage like the majority of singers, however since the third album their stage dynamics changed and it reflects the fact that Keenan's vocals are just another instrument within the band, no more or less. This is integral to both the style and delivery of Tools brand of music. It essentially moves the emphasis away from Tool being a conventional group where the vocals are the dominant foreground element ( as in most bands ) to one where the ensemble of guitar, voice and rhythm section are equally represented and showcased. It's got nothing to do with any perceived isolating from other people. Give me strength!!!

MJK's process seems flexible. Check out some discussions of APC and Puscifer. It seems like the focus is emotion. The approach seems to be a conversation about the emotion, and at times one person dominates and the other compliments (e.g. mer de noms - music was "complete" before melody/lyrics were considered) and other times it is a nugget of an idea thrown in a pit of pitbulls.
