Tucked in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, Jerome has long attracted intrepid characters. In the late 1800s, prospectors descended on the historic town looking to capitalize on its rich copper mines. Over a hundred years later, a different type of pioneer arrived: Maynard James Keenan. The Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle frontman has carved out a uniquely anti-rock-star life in this rugged terrain, filled with winemaking, farming and community building. For two days this past July, Keenan extended a very special invitation to Revolver to join him during this summer's grape harvest. In Episode 1 of our multi-part series, he reveals how his work in Jerome helps create the friction that ignites his creativity.

I'm 54 and once you stop you die. I've seen many times throughout my life. Stay busy at what ever you like to do and always keep searching for serenity. Maynard is the epitome of that philosophy. Leo Perez, I got an autograph from Maynard once. It looks like the McDonald's M. He is an asshole to his fans, it took me a while to understand that he has to be. I saw tool last summer, while the other three where bowing and saying thank you to the fans, he just ran off stage. No wave or anything. were in new-ish territory here with all the easily accessible possibilities that a person can do with their life. because of that, In the past i've felt uncomfortable after learning about Maynard because i have similar interests and approaches to those interests. Despite that, I was 20 when I first learned of Maynard and was already heading in these multiple directions that I am now, so it's not as though I'm a copy cat. Im just blown away...the past few days I had been wondering if I should continue with all my "unrelated" projects. I love playing music and ive taken up guitar recently to move in a new direction. I have always loved on hands on projects though and science. So recently ive started all the projects I wanted to for so long now that I left a bad relationship that was consuming all my energy. Ive started growing mushrooms, im building a kiln and hoping to make my own pottery and will eventually be growing food and herbs. Im not as rich as this guy, but I relate to everything he says about how his hobbies and projects cross pollinate eachother with fresh inspiration and most of all keep him innovating in new directions. This video is a direct answer to the exact question floating around my mind for days...im blown away, thankful, re-inspired, reassured that im on the right path and not going to lie, pretty envious. The only thing that's been keeping me going so far is the old adage "don't let the length of time a goal takes you, discourage you from pursuing it. The time will pass anyway" and I added to that by saying "well if im 40 and I only just finish what I started, at least I'll be 40 with the accomplishments and not just 40". Quite amazing he is. I believe James Hetfield is similarly minded and they are my two favourite bands, perhaps they resonate something on a deeper level through their musix. Something that speaks of similar character I have within myself. He also often refers to the primal nature and needs of mankind which is what this fight is all about really, the artists, the growers and dissidents. Fighting to restore that centre of human pride and meaning through work, innovation and celebration of life, opposed to a purely utilitarian, working class lifestyle. If you are reading this Keenan, you're a total inspiration.

Two thoughts... At the beginning of the movie "The Descendants" with George Clooney, there is a quote - "Leave your kids enough money so that they can do something, but not so much that they can do nothing." I find that idea appropriate for this and, the word I think Maynard is looking for is "stewardship." What we leave for those that come after us is more important than what we achieve for ourselves.

The individualism of American culture is beautiful in many ways but I think that there are key pieces of good and moral lives that we’ve lost due to this. I think it’s possible to still be unusually individualistic and get some of that back. The way we treat our elders, the lack of focus on what we leave our kids, these things need to improve. I think we can do that without suffocating collectivism.

Ive been a professional artist in my field for over a decade. Nowhere on Maynard's level of course but in my own way, in my own trade I've made myself a global reputation and am proud of the work I've done. About 3 years ago I started to feel like I was spending more time doing the whole hustle and the "appearance" work of being an artist than the actual art. My finance and I bought a small farm and started getting into regenerative farming. Since then, I've spent less time in my studio but the time I do spend is so much more inspired and appreciated, I feel I've found balance, I'm doing something important by healing the environment and providing good healthy food to my community, and I feel more connected with an aspect of myself that is deep and primal. I also feel that its helped me balance the financial instability of a creative career in a way that, as Maynard says here, is truly sustainable. Small scale farming, I believe, is something a lot of people in creative careers could really benefit from getting involved in.

So..have to share this story. Went to visit my parent's new home in AZ this summer. The FI single was released while we were there. My kids and I were excited and we were talking about how cool it would be to visit Jerome. My parents overhear me and say "That's just 45 minutes from here, up the mountain". Needless to say we went road tripping the next day!!

I’m so glad that I found Tools music and they have been all I pretty much listen to lately. Now listening to Maynard I understand why their music is so entrancing. I can’t drink alcohol so wine is out of the question but growing vegetables isn’t. It almost makes me want to start or work on a farm. We need more smaller sustainable farms to purify ourselves. I would have thought he was some pretentious douce if I heard this when I was younger probably out of some sort of jealousy now I can appreciate his mind as well as his music. I fall down theses rabbit holes now I’m stuck in the tool Maynard rabbit hole. Let’s see what I can gleen. My other favorite musician rabbit holes have been Iggy Pop, Serj Tankian and Lou Reed. Those we’re my favorites. Now with all the information we can receive it’s actually the one good part of being able to have access to people and ideas the Internet revolution has brought to us. There are tons of negatives as well I’m gonna stop here at the positives.
