Great to hear Hoagy communing with this version of "Riverboat." His vocal, for me, is the high point of the recording, notwithstanding the noble efforts of Jack Jackson and company. It also is a perfect illustration of what a difference twenty-one years and an ocean can make to the indefinable fabric of music, even when the intent is to recreate it exactly. THANK YOU NICK!

Thanks Brad.

They even repeat the mistake at the very end, where Bix comes in 2 beats before he was supposed to. The take sounded so good anyway that they just kept it in.

Pardon me for butting in again two years later! This version actually is as close as we'll ever get to a Hoagy / Bix collaboration on "Riverboat." The re-creation is excellent. Inspired by Hoagy's presence, the band totally throws itself into the task, minding all the crucial details, hewing to the tempo and spirit of the original. Jackson's Bix redux wins on points. Jack is doing his absolute best. It's not HIS fault that he's not Bix Beiderbecke! Hoagy's vocal channels the frantic collegiate style of 1924 better than anything else he recorded in the late '40s or after. So there's a lot to like here. What I said about the delicate "indefinable fabric" of music still goes. Add "frangible" to that. In the seventy-three years since 1948, that fabric has deteriorated beyond recognition!

This is great to hear. And you all must read Hoagy's autobiography, "Sometimes I Wonder", which is as homey as his voice.

Oooh - the tempo is too fast for the words. But Hoagy soldiers through - a great treat to hear -
