@maxl542311 ай бұрын
It wasn't that radioactive after the detonation. The moment the bomb explodes there is huge amounts of gamma rays and x rays, but they get absorbed by the surrounding air. The gamma rays supposedly travel only a few meters, and the X ray a few hundred meters. However, if these rays hit anyone that close they would instantly be vaporized so it's irrelevant. The radiation that people got burned with was thermal from UV rays which extended many km out, however that is not radioactive particles and disappeared moments after the blast. These are the kinds of burns people had, but only when the bomb exploded. The UV rays can also vaporize people, but they would have been close enough to the bomb, which no one was. By the time the UV rays dispersed several km around they lose lots of heat and energy and caused 2nd and third degree burns. The actual radioactive residue from the bomb, which included Uranium 235 and radioactive isotopes from fission, was spread apart in a huge amount of area. The bomb was detonated 300-400 meters above ground which means the radiation spread even more, in this case 60 or so kg of Uranium 235 over a massive area. The much more radioactive particles, the fission isotopes, only composed of 1 kg. Furthermore, Uranium 235 has a half life of more than 700 million years. In half life for radioactive substances, particles like alpha, beta, and gamma rays get released. However, because Uranium 235 is so stable it is not radioactive like more radioactive substances out there. Uranium 235 also emits alpha particles, which don't require a high layer of protection to them (alpha particles can be stopped by paper). Because the bomb was detonated 300-400 meter above ground, the resulting heat from the fireball was dispersed enough when it hit the ground that no one was actually vaporized. This is why nothing except the bomb was vaporized, all of the buildings in ruin and dead bodies of the people remained. Lastly , scientists determined that the resulting area lost 10 times radiation every 7 hours. So even with the limited amount of radiation dispersed, people coming a few weeks later would already be receiving dosages hundreds to thousands times smaller. A lot of people didn't die from the radioactive substances released, but simply the massive burns caused from the UV radiation right when the blast happened. They received 2nd and 3rd degree burns and many died of dehydration and infection and lack of treatment. But if you are thinking of a situation like Chernobyl or Fukoshima, it didn't happen. These nuclear power plants had thousands of kilograms of radioactive substances and nuclear waste, which is what makes a nuclear power plant leak or explosion so dangerous.

The 'A" bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, my 19th birthday. It saved my life and that of 85,000 other service men who were scheduled to participate in the invasion. Six weeks later, I went in there. The odor of rotting bodies yet to be recovered from the ruins and the utter destruction of almost everything at ground zero were hard to describe. I left there but Hiroshima never left me; I came down with cancer many years later as the result of inhaling the radioactive particles that filled the air.

The costs, physical, mental and financial of my being exposed to radiation at Hiroshima, Japan in October of 1945 continue to this day. The operation for throat cancer caused me to be unable to work for three weeks after it was done. Then for some time I was limited in my ability to do so and saw my income cut in half. I was told that I had to be monitored for a five year period to be certain that if the cancer manifested itself again it could be treated in a timely manner. I was told that if it did return, my vocal cords would be affected and may have to be removed. I despaired at this possibility because I made my living in sales. To the cost of the operation and the follow up treatment, I had to pay a premium for life insurance coverage at the rate charged for a man 15 years my senior because of the cancer; this was quite costly. I was awarded a 50% service connected disability in compensation with a payment of $850.00 monthly. This settlement is totally inadequate. Others who were working in the process of producing nuclear components and contracted radiation associated diseases were awarded $100,000 or more in compensation. I was age 91 then and with a life expectancy of 5 years, my total compensation would amount to $51000. I ask that my service connected disability be increased to 100%.That the monthly payment be increased accordingly and that the payment be made retroactive to the original claim for compensation.

Nobody knew about horrible catastrophic consequences of this blast , even those who invented it , but like I say , it was great opportunities so learning came later . You see in Every War and I mean EVERY war , those who are on top will always tell you that whatever they do is in Good Reason . There is never Bad reason , there is always the good one . But the thing is , they don’t go fight , they sit behind the desks , they talk , they sign the papers and they talk again . There are common people who usually die , people like you and me , kids . So to me saying that dropping those bombs was absolutely necessary is like ..... really ? In the 36 day battle on the tiny island of Iwo Jima, 25,000 men died ~18,000 of them being Japanese, only 216 Japanese soldiers surrendered. Now keeping that in mind imagine a US invasion on the homeland of Japan. It is estimated that between 400,000-800,000 US troops would be killed with another 1 million to 3.5 million inured, that alone would be more than enough for me to justify using the A bomb. Now consider the estimate of another 5 to 10 million Japanese deaths. War is the absolute worst thing for mankind trait and tough decisions are inevitable. A mass loss of human life is the saddest thing we as people can fathom. Imagine the bombs were never used and the war finally ends with millions dead and it comes out that the US had a weapon that was capable of ending the war in less than a week and with ~5% of the deaths, that would be the biggest sandal and most criticized event in US history. I presume even you would criticize such a decision. Using the bombs is truly the best example of the phrase "lesser of two evils".

that would be a convincing argument had the japanese people actually showed remorse and shown that they were against the actions AT LEAST after the war, but japan didnt do that, japan has public shrines for warcriminals, refuses to teach most of the history of the atrocities they committed in schools, and have yet to apologize to nearly all of their victims, and even more telling; taken back some of the few apologies they did give. they killed upwards of over twice as many innocent people in nanking alone as both atomic bombs together, and they committed the most horrible atrocities ever, so bad that even actual, litteral n zis told them to calm down. and yet every day they pretend they are victims.

@@Ewan-xw3er have you not seen the Korean War or Vietnam wars? If we hadn’t have dropped those nukes they would have kept going and going. It was a stalemate in the island hopping campaign with the US only have winning a few over. It was basically we either nuke them and end it, or they keep fighting and fighting and fighting. They estimated that another 100,000 service men would have died in the war leading to a treaty if the bombs would have never dropped. But it is devastating to know all those innocent people where killed. The hardships they went through for the rest of there life’s because 2 nations were at war..
@person30702 жыл бұрын
@@R3NEGADE_YT Let me refute that argument Japan refused to surrender even with the war being lost. They planned to fight until every man, woman and child was dead. The US was going to have to invade, they predicted it would take millions to invade Japan. They also predicted that millions of deaths were going to occur on both sides if they did invade Japan in a ground invasion. The USNA states that 500,000 civilians would be killed from a land invasion, twice the amount that died from the bombings. I should also mention, going back to the "more people were saved than killed from the bombings," “approximately two million Chinese and Koreans saved by acting in August, versus invading by land in November.” If we do include that figure, that is 10x more people who were saved than killed by the bombings. One should note that the US made so many purple hearts in preparation for the invasion that we are still using the stockpile to this day. It should also be noted that President Truman warned the Japanese to surrender or else their country would be nuked. It was not a complete surprise. The question of whether or not the bombs were used lied in the hands of the Japanese, not the Americans. If the Japanese swallowed their pride right then and there, the nukes would never have been used. But they never surrendered, so the nukes were used. It was a horrible event. But it saved millions maybe even tens or hundreds of millions, depending on how you define the word “save.” And do not forget the tens, or hundreds of millions of people that the Japanese Empire killed during WW2. Do not forget the other tens of millions of people that the Japanese threw in labor camps, tortured, displaced, or conquered. They conquered the Philippines. They conquered Hong Kong. They conquered Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies, Malaysia, Burma, Vietnam, just to name a few. They tried to conquer China. Because of the bombings, they had to relinquish control of all of these territories, and allow the people of these countries to be free from the hands of colonial reign. When talking about the total death toll of the bombings, it is important to realize that President Truman ordered the bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as opposed to the former capital of the country, Kyoto, and/or the new capital, Tokyo, in order of minimize the loss of human life. He also ordered that "the military objectives and soldiers and sailors, are the target, and not the women and children." (page 314/315) The US even went as far as to drop leaflets warning Japanese citizens of the atomic bomb, and to evacuate their cities while they could (page 345). The bomb was dropped on a city vital to the military industrial complex of Imperialist Japan it wasn’t just to massacre civilian populations. Did innocent people die? Of course! But to focus on this detail rather than the event in its entire context is outright disingenuous and disrespectful to the history of the war. There is no moral good or moral bad in this situation, framing it as if it were allows events like these to happen again because hubris and spite becomes the feeding grounds for conflict. Some claim that Japan sent a peace feeler to the Moscow Embassy, which Stalin informed of to the Big 3 at Postdam. This is true. However, it was so vague that it could not be taken seriously (page 301). Bit of topic, but Stalin and the Soviets were.. brutal. Stalin indicated that some of the Japanese properties should be Soviet trophies, such as shares of Japanese companies. He wanted everything he could get his hands on. (Page 345) May I remind you that Japan started the war by bombing Pearl Harbor? "The United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces by the Empire of Japan. The United States was at peace with that nation. And, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking for the maintenance of peace in the Pacific." Those were the words of then president, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Because it was a war of self defense, a lot of things were fair game, including the bombings. Another counter argument is that the second bombing of Nagasaki was not needed. The thing is, the US gave them 3 full days to surrender. They could have still surrendered in that time span. No rational leader of any nation would have made a different decision than Truman. This is especially true in a democracy. America was, in fact, war weary. It was getting harder and harder to sell war bonds. People were in a hurry to end the war. The secret of the bomb would eventually have been revealed because of Russia and its own atomic program. Imagine an electorate that learned that 1,000,000+ of its husband's, sons, brothers had been sacrificed because we we so high minded as to be unwilling to use the atomic bomb on cities that were bonafide military targets. Others will claim that the US could have just bombed some random place in Japan that had no people to show the country the might of the US. This would not work because the US only had 2 nukes in 1945. If it took 2 cities reduced to nothing for the Japanese to surrender, then there would be no way that the US could have nuked a random place with no people. To address the elephant in the room, about the Soviet invasion of Japan resulting in a Japanese surrender, and not the bombings, it is a bit more complicated. First, Soviet lives would be taken away. Possibly more lives than the bombings took. Tens of thousands of Soviet and Japanese lives were taken away in Manchuria. Second, the bomb gave the Emperor an excuse to make an "honorable" choice for peace. It's easier to say "we were beaten by technology" rather than "we were beaten by the Soviets.” Third, the council controlling the government was deadlocked whether or not to surrender. It was only because of Hirohito breaking the deadlock that the Japanese surrendered. So even with a Soviet invasion, half still wanted to fight. Forth, they also feared the US would drop another bomb on Tokyo, thus killing the Emperor and the imperial family, which what the ministry of war believed would cause nation wide panic and chaos (page 346). Keep in mind that they had no idea how many bombs the US had at that point. So it would be wise to opt for peace. Likely it was a combination of both the bombings and the invasion that made Japan surrender. After the bombings, American public opinion was through the roof, with 86% of respondents of a Gallup poll saying that the bombings were either good, or not bad. And do not forget, that because of these bombs, and Japanese surrender, the Japanese ditched fascism for capitalism and a constitutional monarchy, and as a result are one of the most developed nations in Asia, if not the most developed. Such a reality is unlikely had Japan remained a fascist empire. To elaborate further, For the 7/8 years that US occupied Japan (1945-1953) Japan developed rapidly.; "Americans instituted reforms to make economic power in Japan more "democratic." In prewar Japan, two-thirds of the agricultural land was rented, not owned, by the farmers who farmed it. The farmers, who made up over 50 percent of the labor force, often rented the land from landlords who lived in distant cities and paid them as much as half of the crops they grew. Since the average "farm" was little more than an acre, many farm families lived in poverty. The land reform took land away from big landlords and redistributed it to the farmers, so that farm families could own the land they worked. Because farm families became more independent economically, they could participate more freely in the new democracy. The Americans also tried to make workers in the industrial sector more independent by changing the laws to allow free trade unions. Before the war there were only a few small unions; by 1949, about half of all industrial workers belonged to a union. The biggest change was that it declared that sovereignty rested with the people, not the emperor. This is the political basis of democracy. The emperor was to continue as a symbol of Japanese unity and culture, somewhat like the Queen of England in Britain's democracy, but without any political authority whatsoever. The supreme political institution was now to be Japan's parliament, the Diet, which was to be made up of freely elected representatives of the people. Women were given equal rights under the new constitution, including the right to vote. Local governments were strengthened to encourage "grass-roots level" political participation. The constitution established many new civil liberties, such as the right of free speech, and the powers of the police were weakened and carefully regulated." The Japanese turned to the US in fear of communism. Had the US not occupied Japan, the USSR may have occupied it instead. Actually, originally the USSR was going to occupy the country, but because the USSR did not want to get blown up by the bombs, they did not occupy it. Had it not been for the US, it would have been North Korea v South Korea, or East Germany v West Germany part 3. Because of the US, Japan is capitalist. As we all know by history, American styled capitalism is far superior to Soviet styled communism. There is good reason the US remains the strongest military and economic power in the world today, and not the USSR. Had the US not stopped the Soviets from taking over Japan, Japan would not be one of the most prosperous countries in the world, but rather a country like Venezuela, or North Korea. That is more than enough to excuse the bombings. All in all, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified, and it is foolish to argue otherwise
@owo17442 жыл бұрын
@@Ewan-xw3er You realise that the nukes saved potentially tens of millions of people? The invasion of Japan was gonna involve tens of millions of troops on both side, with Japan potentially recruiting over 30 million civilians to fight, with sticks, swords, spears and bows, since they wouldnt have the guns and ammo to equip every one of them. And I'd say over 90% of them would've ended up dead. The japanese considered surrendering dishonorable, and they had a "death before dishonor" policy, that you're severely underestimating. Their policy was so widespread that the allies stopped taking them prisoner because almost in every single instance where the Japanese surrendered, it was a fake one.

When the United States abandoned racial discrimination in different states after many years of conflicts with the black minority, it immediately began to sanction countries like South Africa! The same procedure happened for the freedom of homosexual minorities! It seems that the path of democracy in the world depends on the decision of the American states! If the American government and different states reach a new social approach or new reforms, they will immediately dictate these new reforms and decisions to the countries of the world! And they don't consider the opportunity they took to achieve democracy for other countries! None of the innocent people who were killed in Hiroshima deserved to die. I have been to Hiroshima twice with my husband, daughter, and 20 American college students. Both times Habakshua came to tell us their stories. We are American citizens, and we were so moved by the horrors that happened to these innocent Japanese people, that we vowed to each other that we would never, ever, allow such a bombing to happen again.

And how this is not genocide?
@howardhughes6212 Жыл бұрын
Kid the Japanese had concentration camps. War is a dirty business. Over a million people died in Rwanda systematically slaughtered. That was genocide. 140k people in a city is not. Your brain doesn’t function in reality. You must be a democrat

It's not a genocide because we have US hypocrites involved in this barbaric crime.
