Finally an episode where I already have one of the bottles! I picked up the Southern Tier after deciding to support regional distilleries making hand sanitizer. I think pine is unmistakable, but more of a pine sap than pine needle. Tons of citrus, but not lemon pledge. It's more grapefruit peel than lemon - sharp and a bit oily. I found it overpowering neat, but try mixing a couple fingers into lemonade. The citrus notes from the hops harmonize really well, the pine becomes more subdued, and the sweetness makes the floral and herbaceous aspects more accessible. It's been a go to drink for me this summer.

Hopefully someone sends in other whiskey that isn't hopped by them. I'd imagine you would like it better based on you liking their NY Farm to Bottle approach. Same with Black Button.
@joederue99004 жыл бұрын
marc I’m not a fan of black button, well most things they make at least they did that collaboration with O’Beglys and I thought that was fantastic as well as their Empire Rye. Their 4 grain bourbon is alright, but I find that most to Rochester based whiskeys taste nearly identical, something about them all using pioneer malts which has a really distinctive flavor that I get from every one from Black button, Honeoye Falls and Iron Root. Though Southern Teir is about the only guys that I don’t get that note on and I’m assuming it’s bc they aren’t using pioneer malts. At some point I want to send these guys a good spread of upstate whiskeys and see their opinions on them. I do have to say though I have been fancying Honeoyes Grist and Saw Empire Rye lately though. And I’d love to send them some of their Smugglers Hive to but ya know, it isn’t whiskey lol
@marcwhiskey4 жыл бұрын
@@joederue9900 i do want to try some of the Empire Ryes since its a distinct NY class of whiskey. Some price points are tough right now because I have so many on my list from other brands that I cant find myself trying $50 bottles of some craft whiskeys that I don't know much about. If not for covid I probably would be visiting all of these places this summer as I don't live far, it's nice day trips
@joederue99004 жыл бұрын
marc yeah I’m the same way, it was a tough buy for the BB empire rye, nearly $90 when that had it out and I had gotten to try it at the distillery but it was like 2 years ago now. I’ve always kinda been a rye guy, or at least rye over bourbon and I love the fact we have a distinctive NY variety of whiskey and whiskey culture. And yeah COVID has thrown me for a loop. My wife and I like to tour and visit local breweries and distillery’s once in the fall and then once in the spring. Needless to say we missed the spring trip this year.

Every time you guys talk about beer, I want to open my big mouth. *deeply inhales*... Southern Tier is a fairly famous brewery for making good but also strange beers that include creme brulee , orange creamsicle, and coffee pumpkin beers. To know they are making weird whiskey is not surprising. You should get your hands on some fresh hops. It might help you to better appreciate the variances in taste, flavor, and aroma that hops can provide. That being said, whiskey has plenty of flavor and interesting characteristics without having to add a strong flavor profile like hops. Also, hops are closely related to cannabis. And you might be able to distinguish a similar aroma between the two. Also also, there are a tremendous variety of malts used in beer brewing that could also add unique flavor profiles to whiskeys including but not limited to chocolate, caramel, crystal and pale malts. Please do a Tribe episode on beer explaining how the two are closely related, but utilize drastically different planning in ingredients and recipes to create the best finished product. Thank you and don't forget to click like and subscribe. *passes out*

Heyyy. I totally appreciated your comment. I wish these companies would brew some interesting malty beers instead of all these super hoppy ones. I am a giant beer fan, but never did get into the hops side so much. I tried, but the only plants in that family I like are pot and catnip.

117 west is in Vista, which is San Diego... It is just outside the city... It is 2 - 3 hrs from Los Angeles.. This native California spirit is born and raised in our home state. The barley is grown using sustainable practices in Northern California and floor-malted in Alameda, CA by Admiral Maltings. Once distilled, it is aged for 6 months in small charred American oak barrels. (Is from the site) It is only aged for 6 months.. I thought that the single malt is need to be aged longer...

I can see buttery and woody in the nose and palate, but I would be reaaaally worried if a "goose" note showed up... What am I saying?! That sounds like Laphroaig! On a side note, I have always wanted to see a whiskey nerds opinion of Calvados, especially one of the ones from Chateau du Breuil finished in whiskey casks. (technically a brandy, I know, but I gotta stick up for the spirits of my ancestors from Moutiers-Hubert) Who knows, you could also find some whiskey finished in Calvados casks and do a taste comparison to see how the flavors and aroma differ.
