Thanks to Brad for sending Daniel and Rex my whiskey and thank you both for the good review! I must apologize for the confusion over the name, it's been a real chore changing our name but I think Pioneer will serve us much better than the old III Spirits name did. I'll work on identifying that "rubber' quality...... I've heard of some young corn whiskies showing that quality. Maybe I just need to limit the amount of younger corn whiskey a little more. Thanks again!

Daniel, here's the scoop on Pioneer. They are a tiny operation in southern Oregon that does everything themselves and uses Oregon grain. Along comes 4 Spirits, who source the majority of their stuff from Indiana and are not transparent about it, and bullied III Spirits to change their name. They claimed that customers and store owners were confusing the two brands. Labels look NOTHING alike and the bottles are not the same shape. Pioneer is delicious and they need support.

4 spirits actually made a big stink about 3 spirits name saying that the customers were getting confused. Except 4 spirits sources the bulk of their stuff and their labels weren't even close to being the same. 3 spirits (pioneer) decided to rebrand. Which cost them a lot of money and time. Unfortunately with that and the fact that OLCC takes such a huge cut they may end up having to close. So if you're in the PNW and can support Pioneer please do. I love the Islay style!

Good evening magnificent bastards, after watching several videos where you notice the funk coming from the craft distilleries' whiskeys, I have to wonder if they age the whiskeys in the same vicinity of their fermenters? Also, what would you do if the whiskey in a 10 or 15 gal barrel has already developed a strong oaky flavor but still has the bridle/bright/fresh taste of young whiskey? Do you think this may be where the funky taste comes from?

Hey guys. Back in May you reviewed Quinn's Carolina Whiskey. I wonder if you'd try blending this in one part with another part Ardbeg 10 and two parts Monkey Shoulder. I've tried this a few times and I think it's really good. I'd live to hear your thoughts.

Hey Whiskey Vault / Rex and Daniel - Have you tried Middle West Spirits' "Pumpernickel Dark Rye?" It is SO smooth and rich, and I think it hits notes that either a bourbon person or scotch person can really enjoy! I'll admit I'm a little home-town proud of this Rye, but I would love to see you guys taste and react to it, especially since I don't know of any other "pumpernickel" anywhere else out there...

Good mezcal's have that outstanding vegetable sour note, plus that rubber note and the funky smoked cheese note that islay scotch has. Just fyi for anyone who likes those tastes. I'm a fan of your channels and I also enjoy Eric Wait as well. Eric talks about the tasting notes from the neck being different from the shoulders of the bottle. Are your reviews being fair since most of your pours are coming from the neck of a freshly opened bottle and you don't get any sample from the shoulders. Is this possibly why you don't always remember the notes of some whiskey because now you are drinking deeper in the bottle or is Eric full of buttermilk. Let's hear your take.

I think Erik is right, a whiskey can change as it is impacted by oxygen in the bottle. We don't do it because we're focused on first impressions vs really in depth reviews.
