I love how this provides further context to Nicky in the first song. It says here that he’s about 20 during his time with Karla and the circus, and the first song said that he was 21 when he was doing all the theft and drugs that got him put in prison for decades with Ben. Karla’s betrayal really broke this poor man before Ben’s friendship pulled him back together. It’s no wonder he’s as loyal and steadfast to Ben as he is.

The cardinal showing up several times in this is amazing! I don’t know if it’s in the others but the symbolism is killing me. Cardinals are said to be loved ones coming back to watch over you, so in a story like this about Nicki’s ghost it holds so much weight! Amazing as always.

It’s possible that in this case the line meant that he was in and out of jail for a time. Good catch about the age thing though.

Something I love is how the music video implies is more going on than we are shown throughout the series. Nicky and shifty becoming friends and having there own little group called the skeleton crew, shifty dying and Nicky somehow in someway was responsible, and also that was around the time of his arrest (my guess is that shifty was involved in Nicky’s smuggling operations and got shot by police), Chaplin doing horrible things to the girls, and the glimpses of Nicky and friends fighting through and escaping hell with when “is that part 4” hits hinting at what part 4 would be about. But also “if it cost me my life I would save my only friend” back in part 1 would mean the skeleton crew broke up or died, and if the reuse of that line is referring to Karla then that would mean Nicky isn’t in contact with Ben or he too died.

Rare Americans is a group I know I can always turn to when feeling down, or needing a kick to get off my ass and start doing things, they've been what I've been listening to when learning to draw, what inspired me to make music, and now they're also making stories slowly fall together between songs. I can't believe this all started with Gas Mask that I truly loved and it's how I found this band, and then came Brittle Bones Nicky which was an instant hit, I never expected songs like Hullabaloo and BBN to evolve into Mr. Please and Sttupid Heart, but you've all officially done it, you did what you wanted, you inspired thousands, possibly millions, and now you're showing your own little universe to the entire world, and they love it! Thank you for making such amazing music, I'm always thrilled to see a new song come out from you guys, and I promise you I won't give up on my dreams as long as you keep proving that dreams are worth chasing. Nicky is such an endearing and genuinely heroic character. The deepest core of his character is that no matter how terrible the odds are, and even if there's a chance he'll get completely screwed in the end by that same person, he'll never regret saving his only friend in need. Karla betraying him broke his heart, but he'd do it again in a heartbeat. It's just who he is.

Brittle bones Nikki is what started me on the journey to listen to Rare Americans and if anything I’m so glad that I did because I’ve been listening to them in my darkest ours ever since I was just a little kid in the 5th grade. I’m 17 now and I’m so glad that they kept Nicky’s journey going and I just can’t wait for more to come

I think he got prison time at 16 (involving Shifty's death) then at 20 he breaks parole for Karla. Eventually he gets caught at 21 and goes to a higher security prison. Or, y'know... It's a retcon/different timeline.
