United in Stormwind type metas are the reason counterspells and instant speed removal are so vitally important in Magic the Gathering. You cannot let the game get to a point where the board doesn't matter if you opponent cannot interact with you on your turn.
@driftwisp2797
@driftwisp2797 10 күн бұрын
Counter spells are a very oppressive mechanic when they're strong though. Instant speed removal to a lesser extent. I tried to play MTGA a while back when Teferi, Hero of Dominaria was running standard, just before being joined by Teferi 3, and that deck had pretty much the same meta impact that Quest Rogue did. You try to play big creatures? Essence Scatter. You try to play big non-creatures? Spell pierce. You try to put some early game pressure curving small creatures into mid sized ones? Deafening Clarion deals 3 to everything for 3 mana. Finally get something to stick to the board despite that? Either Teferi can -3 to put it back. The only deck that could compete was mono red aggro killing them by turn 5.
@r3zaful
@r3zaful 10 күн бұрын
Duel masters, MTG sister game have no instant before 2023, competitively games ends mostly on 3 mana charged nothing is wrong with no counterspells and instant as long you have some wack comeback mechanics, it is solitaire? Yes, mostly turn 2.

@@driftwisp2797 Hero of Dominaria never "ran standard". Throughout the ENTIRETY of its standard run Mono Red or some variant of Red Aggro (RB Midrange, Red Aggro, Red Burn) completely dominated standard. It wasn't until Core Set 2019, at the very tail end of Kaladesh that Teferi really saw actual play. And even then the moment the game settled in Ravnica Sultai Midrange was the absolute best deck for months. And again Teferi didn't see real consistent competitive success until Turbo Fog came around much later near the end of that format, and he rotated immediately after.
@driftwisp2797
@driftwisp2797 8 күн бұрын
@@WhipLash42o That end of Kaladesh to early Ravnica window was exactly when I played, so I have no doubt you know your stuff. The online discourse at the time made it sound like Teferi had been a problem for much longer than that, but perhaps they were overreacting. The impression I got of the meta at the time was that Teferi beat everything aside from mono red and chased out any decks that could otherwise deal with mono red, which was the experience I had trying to deck build. While I have a lot of experience deck building in a lot of games, I don't have much time in MTG so it may just be a skill issue on my part, but I certainly saw a lot more frustration and perception of unfairness aimed at Teferi than mono red, both from myself and others.

Stormwind was indeed the root cause for why I stopped playing. I hung around a bit, but it was the killing blow, everything after was just the deathrattles. Because the fun part for me in playing is fighting for the board. And board did not matter. And it really never mattered again even after, because just about every Class could just wipe an established board and vomit their own in one turn. The only fun I got out of it was to play Deathknight with all the cards that either destroy or steal the opponents' cards, so I could take their combo pieces and force them to actually play the game. But that is a band-aid on an open wound, it only did so much. So, yeah, not installing that game again, it already got more chances than it ever really deserved.

@@imaforceanature7297 It's debatable, DoD+Outlands was a huge powercreep (I'll call DH an extension of DoD) but imo a lesser problem from a design standpoint. DoD started the "created by" meta which did remove a lot of your ability to counterplay what your opponent had, because it was random. But at least the powercreep was evenly spread between aggro, midrange, control, and a dash of combo. Stormwind is still a problem in Wild, some of the cards were so badly designed that they couldn't be fixed and either have to be banned or repeatedly nerfed every new set until the end of time. Imo, infinite damage from hand in every class is more of a shakeup to the game than infinite "created by". It was so bad that people started unironically calling any deck that didn't combo you out before turn 7 a "control deck".

@ Dod was the expansion rogue was printed a 4 mana card that could copy any deathrattle in your deck. That’s not far off what we have today but insanely strong in comparison to most things we had before. For a while after it launched we had a whole stupid ass dragon rogue deck in wild that used apothecary to dump 7 dragons on the board and instantly win the game. The closest thing we ever had to that beforehand was naga sea witch getting changed so giants were broken.

Rarran, you hit the nail on the head with the Stormwind questlines. They caused a problem similar to one in Magic - cards that reward you for the things you were going to do anyways AND make your gameplay loops more consistent (Read up on the Companion mechanic in MtG for a good example) tend to create unfun metas. Combined with Hearthstone's obsession with "let's see who runs out of board wipes first" and you have absolutely miserable gameplay.

here's the issue with your complaint about the mage questline specifically, at the time it released, there wasn't enough 'good' spells in the discover pool to be able to get one you could cast that would trigger the next stage of the quest, and around halfway through the expansion period, most decks stopped playing minions on key turns because A LOT of mage spells at that point in time were only targetable against minions, there were a few that went face, but on the discover side of things you were almost always going to be offered at least 1 minion based spell and one spell that wasn't part of a spell school or had a passive/non interactive effect to the board state/enemy hero, it wasn't until the rotation happened that there was enough 'good' damage spells in the discover pool that people started bitching about it, I know this because I got legend with a spell mage deck of my own and constantly ran into issues of discovering the likes of 'brain freeze' or 'first flame' or 'ray of frost' for example.

You don't require literal quests to do "questing". The excavation mechanic was basically a quest, and probably a better one.

0:34 I've been around the block before, this does not even phase me After the 7 year mark you're either Yugioh casually breaking your game every month, or you're TF2 and updating your game twice in one year is cause for celebration

I actually played and pretty enjoy that expansion, rogue quest is indeed not great though. But I do enjoy trying other quests at that time & probably because I dont really try to get to a good ranking at all in my hearthstone life, I am able to try different things to put into these quests.

So this is a fascinating trend I see occasionally develop in casual multiplayer games. You may have seen Salubrious Snail talk about it in commander, but there seems to be a consistent trend of tall decks becoming the norm. Many Hearthstone players really want to see their deck pop off and quests are a parasitic mechanic that more or less ensures you have all the payoff for a combo deck secured on turn one. Many cards that rip out combo pieces are often anemic and/or inconsistent, while still gaining hatred for being able to do that, you can't really floodgate an opponent out of pulling off their combo and the explosive value of a combo deck and its OTK potential means you can't really blunt the impact of the quest reward, either. Instead, all decks gradually centralized more and more around gaining more value faster and killing your opponent quicker, as aggro was more or less the only way you can prevent a combo deck from crushing you. This meta game tall style is what I see happen. There is no way to play "under" a quest that disrupts its gameplan other than all-out aggression. The few handrip cards that can stop traditional combo decks don't work against it because you don't draw into the payoff until you're ready. You can't suspend or destroy an ongoing quest to deny your opponent its value. Most of the quest fulfilling cards aren't easy to check because e.g. in the warlock class, these cards are a premium counterbalanced by the self-damage, so you can't even try to trade down value. I guess I don't really agree that a card type is good design if it intrinsically dodges all interaction, lessens the need to think about the early game and centralizes the game entirely around its payoff.

It's the exact same shit that happened with shadowverse. Slowly every deck started being about "do mechanic x times until finish the little quest and now all your cards do face damage somehow". This made it so decks just race to play solitaire and blow your face off by turn 7, and the decks also build themselves. If the mechanic I need to trigger to win fast is heal, for example, then I'll search every heal card available in rotation and stick it in the deck. Done. This also creates a lot of useless parasitic cards because now you're not gonna play a card that says "whenever you heal, do 1 damage" when this heal win condition card rotates out.

i got back to hs after few years when stormwind released (back then i had a lot of fun with aggro shadow priest and quest dh, garrote rouge was just solitare but it was also funny cause most of the time i outplayed myself rather then my opponent) and stopped in the end of march of the lich king, when you showed those dates at the beggining i just realized how much time passed lmao

This video made me realise that literally 8/10 of the questlines (apart from the Paladin/Rogue ones from what I remember) were either meta or busted. A lot of them were also nerfed (some multiple times) and they were still busted/meta.

A card game is in its best state when midrange is the meta. That signifies that game-ending synergies are sufficiently hard to execute, and board states are significant. Mtg has run into this problem too.

The noninteractivity in UiS was so bad that it was often beneficial to not play minions or to play them and immediately destroy them yourself, because some spells, that advanced quests, could only target minions. Think about it: the best strategy in a card game was often to not play cards...

This is the only expansion that made me quit hearthstone. I quit due to Questline priest completing the quest, then drawing the purified shard on the VERY NEXT TURN with 25 cards still in the deck. I had lethal on that turn.

Well, it certainly killed it for me. The most frustrating thing about it is they, not only thought that making an endless burn deck was OK, but that half the classes needed thier own version.

I stopped playing Hearthstone in 2019 and came back 3-4 months ago. The first time I faced a questline, I was like "oh cool, they took something from Un'Goro and evolved it". The second time I started to understand how unfun the game had gotten in the span of 5 years
