I remember when I started training for track and field, My very first years I didn't take it seriously cause in my area, no one was good so I'd always be running the 100m in 13 seconds and ended up winning, and then when the next year came, I got beat for the first time from a guy who was about to become an 11 second runner, after when I got beat I started to take it seriously, I went to the gym and worked my ass off, and I went from being a 13 flat runner to an 11.50 second runner in only a few months, that guy couldn't keep up with me anymore

You shared your story so I'll share what is hopefully only the start of mine. I run the 400m in Hawaii, perhaps one of the slower states in the nation, but I think we have solid athletes. I'm not #1 in the state or anything, but I really want too be next year. My first 400m I ever ran I ran last year as a sophmore, a 59.8ish and everyone told me I did a good job, I got first in my heat and second for that meet. But I refused to settle for that so I kept competing in the 400m until I finally got it down too a season best of 54.63 before my season was over. I was determined too be even better the following season which is this current season. I ran my first 400 at 54.7(forgetting i got a 54.6 so I thought I improved lol) I was my schools fastest 400 runner, but I was not satisfied, and was determined to set myself apart from all the people in my school who always bitched and moaned about running any 400 I tried to relish it each time (tried, obviously I didn't want too at times but I never bowed out) I finally ran a sub 54 (53.93) I was so happy, and then I continued to improve as the season continued. Then I ran a 53.03 at eastern OIA divisionals (Half of the public schools) It made me qualify for states and I was just so happy and overjoyed that I hit my goal, but I still knew I had more, I was actually disappointed I didn't sub 53 because my coach hand timed me at 52.8 And then in a last chance qualifying meet, I subbed 53 with a 52.47 I then had OIA champs left and I was suppose to be in the final 8 so during the trials I ran hard, And got a 52.42 A Pr But I was kinda pissed, I clinched the final 8 as the slowest person too make it. I was determined too earn a medal, meaning I had to place top 6. It was possible I was only less than a tenth of a second behind the other 2 guys in front of me. I ran that race the hardest I every have, running against our States best runner who ended up getting a 48.99( who I'm slightly friends with) I finished just at the line with one of my Track friends from another school, One of us was going to be 6th The other 7th. I waited with my coach(in pain-lots of pain) To see what my time and placing was As my coach continued to praise me saying it was the best race I had run all season, and I had done wonderful and she was so proud. Everyone kept telling me good job. The results finally came out And I saw my name 7th on the list at 51.63 My friend had finished 6th Just .05 seconds faster. I deflated so much because I had wanted the medal so bad, and I had ran the entire last 120 roaring in pain. I had Pr'd almost an entire second and I was still so defeated. I watched all 6 of those guys get on the podium, and was demoralized, even as my friends and all the parents I knew were praising my sub 52 milestone. I was happy with it but I wasn't satisfied. I have a picture of all those guys on the podium as a constant reminder of what my goal is going too be. To break the record my friend I mentioned earlier just set who got first place 48.99 I have a year too do this and my coach is constantly pushing me too do better. I have 800m left in my season One 4x400 for States And an Open 400 for states. I'm not counting on being in the final 8 for States. But at the rate I've improved with no offseason training, I'm confident for next year. People always tell me I'm fast especially now with the 51.63 (Eleventh Grade should mention earlier) But I believe that complacency and satisfaction is the second biggest enemy of progress. The first one is laziness My coach plans too work with me this summer too turn me into the best 400meter runner in the state. My goal is simple 48.99 I have a year too do it, and too me it seems doable. This was just my short little Track story, I'm so glad you shared yours, I also believe in never giving up. That's why I love the 400m, it's the best race ever, and in the words of my coach "you can't be a pussy and run it" I have one more meet left and I hopefully can PR(PB?) again, Thanks internet for listening too my story.

BenTV Update even though it’s been 2 years. I legit forgot I wrote this. For many personal reasons I never was able to run sub 50. I guess the fire died. I was able to make it to a DIII Track team and was on pace to improve as I had run a 1 second opening season PR my first time on an indoor track. Covid hit and our outdoor season was cancelled. Financial reasons saw me leave the university. And personal reasons saw me give up on Track. That shouldn’t affect anyone else though. Maybe I oughta shoot for more optimism like this post again. But things just happen sometimes.

And btw, I like the story. I ran in high school but I wasn't really sure about jumping into college.. I ran times of 52.09 400m, 11.5 in the 400, and a 23.8 in the 200. Division 2 and 3 schools would send me letters about going to make roster spots and such but I joined the military instead. But now I have 7 months left and am considering trying to run again.. I just miss the competition and fun you get achieving goals. The military was more of a space to get my mind some time since I wasn't really sure of the career I wanted at the time. But now I'm considering if I should go out and train again. The college is division 1 and to walk on you would need a 50.5 400, 22.00 200, and an 11.00 100. Sound really tough, but I only ran two years in high school as you did and I think with all the strength training I've done while in the military I can achieve some results. What do you think I should do?

Yea we both have the same PBs in the open 800 and a 50-51 guy in the open 400. I was a 1:59-2:00 guy in HS and then once I went to college I finished with a 1:55 PB and a 49.2. I wasn't the most talented guy out there and I got blow away by guys running 1:50 and 46-47 in college but I never gave up and pushed myself very hard and I can say now years later that I'm proud of my achievements knowing that I achieved personal success and you should be too and I hope all of you runners who think you won't be good enough that the key is to stay focused and work hard and don't worry about those that are faster than you and to worry about yourself and your personal goals.

Aloha Rashaad! I really enjoyed your video. I had a similar life story about not giving up, it led to alot of great accomplishments in my life. I don't really want to put it out on your video, because I don't want to steal your thunder and have people go after me here on KZbin. But I will take a chance and trust that you will delete negative comments. Anyway, I am a two-time Olympian for American Samoa (2000 and 2004) and have pretty good PR's. I am trying to break the WR in the 200 and 400 for my age group. I now have alot going on outside of track, but I learned tremendous life lessons. And you are doing a great job perservering through college. Good luck in your future and contact me if you want to.

Amazing story. Currently a senior in high school and need to run under 1:59 if I want to run in college. I currently run a 2:01. Seeing as you were in a similar scenario as me and you were able to succeed, this is definitely very motivating for me. Thanks!

Ethan Clifford in high school i was a 2:00 at the start of my senior year and was mostly at that pace all year until i ran at arcadia invitational and ran 1:55 out of nowhere in a distance relay with new girlfriend watching. I then ran 1:55 for the rest of the season and probably coulda hit 1:54 but messed up in my last race. My point is i think u can do it, find emotional motivation and train ur butt off, you got it

Hey Rashad, my son is a Junior in high school and went from 58 as freshman, scratch sophomore yr. , and last week he ran 55.90. Pretty good, but not what he could have run. He was at about 37 seconds at the 300m , and his last 100 meters was where he got burned out. Are there any tips you could give, that would help him conserve energy and finish where he should have been which was probably a 51 to 52.Thanks, Rashaad. We are big fans!

I'm a girl from western Ireland (pic not me lol) but I hold the 800m record for my old club at 2:07. Since then i've been running in my 3rd year for my college, and i've medalled at 2 nationals (bronze and silver) :DD. Trying harder than ever to get to 2:05 (to break my college 2:05.5 record) but i'm really putting in the work to pick up my speed so i'm doing 2x100 & 2x200 & 2x800 each session. This has really fueled me to put in more work- much needed inspiration, thanks! xx

Thank you Rashaad ! Your story inspired me to keep pushing on my goals. I haven't run track of my life, but I can run 200m in 25.64s exactly like you 😆, I played basketball. Next year, I'll begin track & field during my senior year of highschool and I hope I will run under 22,6s in one year with a difficult training of 5 times per weeks. I hope to run in D1 for University.

That's allright. you can still run if you want to for fun. try fun races. road races. they are longer than an 800m. join your local running clubs. there are racing circuits to keep you busy. try spartan, tuff mudders, trail running, road running. usatf cross country, usatf meets, road races crossfit?, etc. go to invitational for track and field. You can still run if you want to Rashaad. you got talent. this is coming from a college track coach.

Your story is amazing and i hope to do as well as you, or at least do the best i can do. rn I'm a sophomore running a 2:09 800 and a 55 400. next season i hope to be around 2:02 in the 800!!

Your story is inspiring to a young runner like myself. I was discouraged after I couldn't break 2 at the state meet this year. But, I know that I should always keep working and that I shouldn't quit. I'm in 10th grade and if you have any tips that would be great. My events and times are: 4x400: 53.5 800: 2:01 1600: 4:41 Anyone who knows how I can improve my times I would love the feedback. Thank you.

I am like that too I had a trauma in tracks it took me 4 years to finally join and it was when I was in my 4th year of high school I tremble everyday on the field the coach though I was great but she doesn't know I was suffering from a post trauma that is taking time to healed she started to underestimated me talk down on me I remembered I cried that day I tell myself I'm gonna rise back up a track meet was soon approaching and I had to give me best that night before I couldn't eat nothing neither sleep I was restless when It was my turn I ran to the bathroom with panic eyes and I keep telling myself good words I went on the track and came second in 400m I was disappointed but I had alot of more room to grow many are faster than me I'm behind because of some circumstances I'm worried but give it my best by working hard track meet in a week or so and I'm weak for now.
