Rashid Khalidi: Haley Put a Nice Face on Trump’s “Horrific” U.S. Policies

The former South Carolina governor-one of the few women in Trump’s Cabinet-gave no reason for her departure. During Nikki Haley’s time as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the United States withdrew from the Paris climate accord; the U.N. Human Rights Council; the Iran nuclear deal; UNRWA, the U.N. agency that provides humanitarian aid to Palestinians; and UNESCO, the U.N. Educational and Cultural agency. We speak with Rashid Khalidi, Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University, about the significance of Haley’s departure and the role of the United States at the United Nations. Khalidi is the author of “Brokers of Deceit: How the U.S. Has Undermined Peace in the Middle East.” His next book, titled “The Hundred-Years War on Palestine” will be out in May.

I disagree with the treatment of Palestinian people in and surrounding Israel. The conditions in the West Bank is worse than a prison. So don’t think that I support Israel in any way shape or form... I don’t support Israel or making Jerusalem the capital of Israel. But what this Palestinian professor or any Palestinian expert or democracy now news fail to report is that Palestine doesn’t want a two state solution. In the Islamic belief system, it is believed that Muslims will once again concur the whole of Jerusalem and their prophet Muhammad will return, bringing a final battle for world domination and that world peace will come once Islam concurs all of the countries in the world. With these beliefs there is no possibility of peace in Israel and Palestine... with these beliefs there is no possibility of a two state solution. Equally on the Israel side, the Jewish people believe in a final battle over Jerusalem where they concur the entirety of Jerusalem and it becomes their capital. Then add in Christian beliefs, where they believe that Christian beliefs are the fulfillment of Jewish beliefs of a messiah coming to rule over all people... to be the king of all kings... and the Christians also believe there will be a final battle over Jerusalem. And it is the Jewish and Christian belief system which is motivating the decision for the Trump administration to move the US embassy to Jerusalem. But nobody wants to discuss the religious motivations behind all this conflict. Seriously, peace is not possible in this part of the world because you have three Abrahamic religions that want a final battle in Jerusalem... and none of them want a two state solution where Judaism and Islam equally share control of Jerusalem... the both want full control of Jerusalem. This is not a conflict born of nation states fighting for recognition, control of land and defining borders... this is a conflict born from religious beliefs.

Nikki Haley forgets that the Palestinians were there before Israel occupied their territory and that it is not fair to treat them as foreigners or second class citizens. Jared was always very biased about Israel because his father has projects there to build houses for Jewish immigrants in order to expand Israel's territory. It was bad diplomacy to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.
