I found it to be disturbing. Greed is a-political. Unless your belief is about greed and desire itself (buddhism). Capitalism supports greed and covers it up when it is illegal. That's not just these 2 women, that's over 70 years of US policy, if not just US policy. General Smedley D. Butler still wrote it down best in 'war is a racket': War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses. I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag. I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket. There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism. It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service. I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested. During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents. Note that it was published in 1933 - and not one thing has changed...

It's not a punditry debate between political factions, it's a mediated and fluid discussion, free of hyperbole, with participants from both parties. Comedians, because of their creativity, are frequently much more gifted thinkers and speakers than are the reporters and pundits you see in 24 hour news cycles. There are so many examples of folks like Jon, but oh man is this a reminder of the trail he and people like Carlin have blazed for nuanced thought and analysis. I think Stewart wasn't talking to them to publicly prove them wrong but rather to allow the 2 former Secretaries of State to lay out their hypocrisies for podcast listeners. @@janicegullett8779 In the US the for profit healthcare industry makes campaign contributions to politicians to keep them from passing Medicare for All (which has the support of 70% of the population). It's impossible to get anything like that done because the culture war causes voters to be easily distracted & manipulated. These industries, including big pharma, also spend billions in advertising each year on television. Every other ad on cable news is some pill for erectile dysfunction. They're the biggest customers of our "news." So when we have political primaries, the "news" smears any candidate that supports popular policies, like Medicare for All, & tells viewers to vote for the "moderate" like Hillary Clinton because they're "more electable." They don't really ever back those statements up with data, because the polling data shows that's not true. Unfortunately, liberal voters in the US are really easily manipulated by corporate media and progressives are emotionally battered if they try to demand anything. To all those people who are disappointed about why Jon didn't press them more about their roles in foreign wars, regime changes etc., they need to understand that not all interviews are of the same type. I'm not saying all interviews should be like this one above, but a few of such ones, if done as well as Jon has here, do actually serve a key purpose. This interview, right from the get-go, is of the nature wherein the interviewer sets a direction to the conversation by asking a question, and then gives a free reign to the interviewees to answer what they want. We've all seen Jon question their policies in the past, and he obviously isn't someone who's going to back away from questioning politicians. He's done it in the past, he still does it, and he'll keep doing it. These kinds of interviews are also important in their own way, because they give a lot of space/time to the intervieews to speak their mind. Politicians of their stature are used to being interrupted/confronted, "prepping" for interviews and giving readymade answers, it's all second-nature to them. So, them not being in that kind of an environment makes them relatively more honest and "casual", and gives the people/viewers/citizens a deeper insight into their thought processes. It disarms the politicians. The politicians basically "reveal"/"expose" themselves, as we saw in the case of both of these women. That's why such interviews are important. They shed a light into what makes politicians take stupid or dangerous decisions, so that people (and by extension, the electorate) are more aware of these things in order to look out for such signs in the politicians of today or tomorrow/of the future.

I don't blame anyone for being circumstantially unaware of what I'm going to attempt to illuminate, but these false dichotomy of "liberal" v. "conservative" are almost entirely indistinct but for their specific (but arbitrary) cultural shibboleths, consistent only in their inconsistency and unifying "bipartisan" overlapping consensus that emphasizes above all else a totalizing acquiescence to the _actual_ root of _all_ of these social antagonisms which has uncoincidentally become a third-rail to even mention in any context other than utter reverence...CAPITALISM. What Jon intuits but can't quite drill down on is that capital-L Liberalism (undergirded by a _material_ organization vis a vis ownership/control which implicitly dictates one's class, ie working class v. capitalist class, employer v. employee) _necessarily_ leads to the outcomes we then excuse or justify with rhetorical nonsense. There's a reason the adage _"scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds"_ exists, and it is illuminated quite clearly when looking at history through a grounded materialist lens ("historical materialism"). If we take something like the March on Rome for instance and how it brought Mussolini to power through that "totalitarian compromise" based on implicitly appealing to liberal property owners/capital by demonstrating the ability and will to direct a thug paramilitary (blackshirts) to beat the shit out of labor unions and their leaders, or merely look who _materially supported_ the nazi party in Germany, it becomes obvious that _class_ is the (uncoincidentally) concealed dividing line of society. Distinct from any other type of inherently divisive/fracturing (and thus extremely politically useful) identity politics, _class_ is dictated by one's material relationship to property and most importantly one class _necessarily_ benefits at the others' zero-sum expense. It's not a coincidence we're repeating this bullshit, and the superficial mythology of the "cold" war (and really of the entirety of US history) conceals the brutal reality of now-globalized class war. For anyone circumstantially unfamiliar (and at the risk of writing a book here lol), probably the most revealing history is the entirety of covert (but of public record) US involvement in "regime change", as it allows one to triangulate the basic macro of what I'm getting at, cementing a distinct pattern of ulterior motivations and interests served that cannot be dismissed as "mistakes" or "incoherent" (as -demonic arcon- Hillary Clinton disguised it). Take Iran in '53 with Operation AJAX (overthrowing democratically elected Mosaddegh to halt oil nationalization - same situation in Venezuela, that is what Chavez started) installing the Shah for the next 20+ years until a grassroots revolution took hold in '79, Guatemala in '54 with Operation PBSUCCESS (overthrowing democratically elected Arbenz for _mild_ land reform - also see: banana wars, monroe doctrine prior, and the overarching US domination of its so-called "back yard" in Operation Condor), Sukarno in Indonesia, Lumumba in the Congo, the _first_ 9/11 in '73 in Chile overthrowing democratically elected Allende for Pinochet's military dictatorship, this is merely the tip of the imperialist iceberg, but importantly these are not discrete events to be morally judged independently of any other context (as is constantly appealed to in the notion of "whataboutism"), they form a historical _continuity_ that highlights the trajectory of the US empire and its ascendance to global hegemony. As most can intuit to some degree, this relies on the 800+ military bases Jon alludes to (unfortunately assuming their function to be innocuous or "good" even) "full spectrum domination" over global oil markets, launching itself to supremacy post-WWII via imposing the Bretton-Woods international financial system with the US dollar as the "global reserve currency" using the leverage of being the only industrialized nation-state _not_ bombed to shit and essentially taking the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling, and creating the international institutions of the IMF/World Bank which masquerade as somehow neutral entities of directing capital flows, but very brazenly/brutally work at the behest of transnational corporate/finance capital to impose states of debt-peonage and resource/labor control (see: "washington consensus", IMF/World Bank "structural adjustment" policy which stipulates dollar loans in exchange for complete subordination to US corporate/finance capital and its "shock therapy" austerity programs which serve to strip-mine resources and control labor/regional markets, etc.). Ok so, that broader macro context/outline leads us to where we are now: the US has positioned itself as the "consumer of last resort" at the end of the global supply chain to absorb inevitable overproduction of capitalism through cheap consumption or of course through our favorite activity of war/arms sales (military Keynesianism, the only button we can push at this point clearly). So NATO, for a perhaps relevant consideration of historical context/continuity, is an arms distribution network for the military industrial complex and essentially the public face of a European sphere of US domination, covertly enforced by a "strategy of tension" template seen in things like Operation Gladio in Italy (see: "years of lead", Aldo Moro assassination, Bologna bombings, etc.) with parallel operations in every NATO country (and even the ostensibly "neutral" countries like Belgium, Sweden and Finland - Austria in fact having done an extensive internal investigation after discovering this if I recall) where the CIA directed fascist paramilitary insurgencies to stoke public fear toward particular goals favorable to US corporate/finance capital and continued US hegemony. Its internally recognized geopolitical functionality as succinctly put by its first sec.gen was to, _"keep the Americans in, the Germans down, and the Russians out"_ and, what a "coincidence", its geopolitical function continues to enforce this state of affairs (Nord Stream being a particularly revealing and unsurprisingly largely avoided aspect of the geopolitics here, Germany essentially resigning itself to purchase 4x more expensive LNG from, what a surprise, the US..."freedom fuel" I guess lol...). Really the _only_ political question is: _cui bono?_ ( *_who benefits?_* ) The leviathan of the state (Hobbes), idealistically a neutral arbiter/mediator between the social classes emergent from the organization of material reality known as capitalism (ie worker/employee v. capitalist/employer), is merely used as a political cudgel by the capitalist class to further dominate the working class, leading precisely to the situation we find ourselves in with both parties being entirely captured by corporate/finance capital, basically just different aesthetic brands which can be traced back to the elite cultural aggrievements expressed in the federalist/antifederalist factions of Hamilton/Jefferson which lead to the civil war and remain unresolved, all the while this soulless mechanical process hollowing out all social trust/meaning to be sold for profit and at quite literally all other costs. As that craaaaaazy Marx guy put it, _"the executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie."_ The _actual_ choice for humanity, should we choose to you know _actually_ reconcile with reality, is just as Rosa Luxemburg framed it prior to (with the split in the international socialists over war credits) and during the uprisings in 1918 Germany that lead to Weimar which merely kicked out the Kaiser to recapitulate capital's dominion under the form of "liberal democracy", before of course being executed by the freikorps paramilitary (later becoming the SS, shocker) at the behest of Ebert's ostensibly _social democratic_ SPD, almost immediately resonating the truth of her Spartacus movement's succinct and (tragically) accurate political dichotomy to this day: *_socialism or_* [continued] *_barbarism._* Hopefully _any_ of that wall of text made sense lol...

If my prior screed of consciousness there was too long or didn't make sense, reminded of the great Michael Parenti, an excerpt from his piece Mystery: How Wealth Creates Poverty, which highlights this very same dynamic under the auspices of global US empire and its "full spectrum domination" by probing for descriptive explanations grounded _materially_ and throwing out unfalsifiable normative smokescreens: _"In their perpetual confusion, some liberal critics conclude that foreign aid and IMF and World Bank structural adjustments “do not work”; the end result is less self-sufficiency and more poverty for the recipient nations, they point out. Why then do the rich member states continue to fund the IMF and World Bank? Are their leaders just less intelligent than the critics who keep pointing out to them that their policies are having the opposite effect?_ _No, it is the critics who are stupid not the western leaders and investors who own so much of the world and enjoy such immense wealth and success. They pursue their aid and foreign loan programs because such programs do work. The question is, work for whom? Cui bono?_ _The purpose behind their investments, loans, and aid programs is not to uplift the masses in other countries. That is certainly not the business they are in. The purpose is to serve the interests of global capital accumulation, to take over the lands and local economies of Third World peoples, monopolize their markets, depress their wages, indenture their labor with enormous debts, privatize their public service sector, and prevent these nations from emerging as trade competitors by not allowing them a normal development._ _In these respects, investments, foreign loans, and structural adjustments work very well indeed._ _The real mystery is: why do some people find such an analysis to be so improbable, a “conspiratorial” imagining? Why are they skeptical that U.S. rulers knowingly and deliberately pursue such ruthless policies (suppress wages, rollback environmental protections, eliminate the public sector, cut human services) in the Third World? These rulers are pursuing much the same policies right here in our own country!_ _Isn’t it time that liberal critics stop thinking that the people who own so much of the world---and want to own it all---are “incompetent” or “misguided” or “failing to see the unintended consequences of their policies”? You are not being very smart when you think your enemies are not as smart as you. They know where their interests lie, and so should we."_

I get this wouldn’t have been Jon’s focus here to play hardball with both of their hawkish policies, but the moment Condoleezza talked about focusing on democracy post Cold War, I would have loved to hear her comment on Bush Admin’s role in democratically elected Aristide’s overthrow in Haiti in 2004. We owe so much to the Haitian people. Research it. Don’t forget it.

Shame on Jon for allowing these two monsters to wantonly lie unchallenged. Particularly his refusal to challenge Rice’s assertions that we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan for “security” reasons. I grew up watching Jon refute these lies in real time during those wars. To see him cash in his legacy in order to get these “high-profile” interviews is tragic. The Jon I knew and loved wouldn’t have allowed such bullshit to go unchallenged for one minute…

The problem with Jon Stewart. This is a guy who gives medals out to nazis. He's a big contradiction.

I don't think he cashed in... he laid out the carpet so that their colors are visible to all...

are you suggesting that we don’t speak to who we disagree with and we don’t debate and or learn about things we are opposed to? If that’s the case who do we investigate and learn in order to not repeat those same mistakes?
@Walrus2862 жыл бұрын
@@thisiscarib they’re maybe suggesting that you’d ask tougher questions to the blood soaked monsters that share a huge amount of the responsibility for the deaths of 100s of thousands of people in the Middle East.

Jon's stomach must be super solid to be able to talk to these two ladies. There is a clearly visible trail of dead bodies behind each of them. I guess it is nice to know what "arguably" war criminals think about things but I'd say they need to be publicly shamed or just forgotten.

Ladies? Monsters is more like it.

publicly trialed is what I'd suggest. Maybe the US regime at some point will recognize the international court of justice and let their criminals be held accountable. Until then, sociopaths will be sociopathing their way to the top I'm afraid
