Kaneki's torture is probably the reason I come back to this anime so often. I don't like watching him get tortured, but the deterioration of his mental state over the course of it and the result of it all is just crazy to watch. Seeing him change so drastically is just interesting to witness.

I guess in a way Kaneki, Yamori, and even that psychotic human ghoul investigator torturer lived through me. When I was in middle school and say Tokyo Ghoul season 1, I was affected quite a bit. This really impacted the way I viewed the world, and made me become more selfish. To prioritize my life over everything else. The most impacting thing of course was seeing the torture Kaneki suffered through inflicted by Yamori. The messages and lessons being conveyed through this torture and of course when Kaneki breaks free, fights, and kills Yamori deeply imapcted me and something that had made me become the person I am today (in regard to my world view and how I was as a person). Of course I don't derive any pleasure form torture, and I have no desire or intentions to hurt anyone. But I came to become cynical, believing people are selfish, and cruel. To not trust others, to prioritize my life over everything else, because if I don't I will suffer, and probably die miserably, without probably not being able to help anyone. Almost like what Kaneki went through. Something I absolutely didn't want to become. So I became more selfish, but did my best to keep to myself. So yeah because of this, because the lessons and messages stuck with me and impacted my worldview, in a way Kaneki, Yamori, and that human investigator torturer live through me. (Since one of Yamori's goals were to impart these lessons and "teach"/"show" Kaneki the horrible/harsh truth of the world.) Scarily enough I too began finger cracking since middle school, and have continued to do that today. But I will still try to be kind, caring, and helping of my fellow human beings, but not at the risk of me facing any negative/undesirable consequences. If I have to choose between my life and someone else, I will 95% of the time choose my life. If helping someone will give a huge risk to me having to face a negative/undesirable consequence I will abandon the quest to help the other. Because to me my life is important. I urge others to do this too. That is because expecting others to be self-sacrificing is one heck of a ridiculous and illogical gamble considering the possible selfish nature of human beings. I mean humans have committed so many atrocities, and people that were good/best friends for years have betrayed and killed their so called friends. Please your life is the most important part of your life, you must prioritize that over everything else, because I doubt anyone else will prioritize tour life over theirs (Yes there are a few exceptional human beings that are so heroic and good to priortise other lives over their own, and I both respect and feel bad for them. Some parents are so good that they are willing to die to save their child and also do a lot of sacrfice for their children.)

But yeah if a life or death situation comes up, and I'm genuinely not able to save both me and my child, and I truly have no choice but to choose between saving myself or my child. Then yes I will choose to save myself. Please note, I will truly do my best to save both myself and my child. But if the situation truly comes down to having to choose to save myself or my child. Then I choose to save myself. I essentially expect that any human would do the same to me or to anyone else. There have been many children in the world who despite having people in their lives that sacrificed and did so much for them. Still decided to turn their backs on the very people that sacrificed and did so much for them. These labels of good or bad are irrelevant (to me) when it comes down to having to survive. Everything and anything only comes after surviving and living. What is the point of ideals if there is no life? If I am worse than the people I'm talking about. Then so be it. That doesn't matter to me. I must survive and live. A deeply rooted desire that every living thing has, and I will do my best to not cause any sort of harm or negative consequences to another sentient living thing. I don't want to cause any harm or anything to others.
