This is not a simple song about bird feeding. The poet Zacharias Topelius wrote the lyrics after his little son's sudden death. So, the sparrow the girl is feeding is actually her dead little brother from the Land of the Angels. That's why this touches us Finns so deeply. I can not sing or hear this without crying. 😭👍 This performance with Marko and the children's choir is one of my absolute favorite Christmas carols.

This is my favourite Chrismas song ever since I was a child. I was very young when I used to listen to this and cry for the little bird that turned out to be the spirit of the younger brother that had died. I still can't listen to this without getting choked.

Yup, always tears when listening. 🖤

It's one of the most beloved Christmas songs in Finland. People used to believe that birds could travel between this world and afterlife. They believed that a birds brought people their souls in birth and then took them away to the afterlife when people died. They also believed that during the sleep person's soul left the body. To prevent the soul from getting lost or drifting away during the sleep, they kept carved wooden birds next to the bed to keep soul attached to it. When a people died, those wooden birds were place on their graves. They believed that those passed on could visit the living in a shape of a bird. You can still see little bird statues on, especially little children's gravestones, and it's a Christmas tradition to feed the birds with seeds and light candles on graves. Some Christmas songs: "Raskasta Joulua 2019 "Happy News". These don't have translations: "Raskasta Joulua Heinillä härkien kaukalon Akustisesti" and "Raskasta Joulua Nisse Polkka Remastered". One from Tarja: "Tarja "Turunen - Walking in the Air Raskasta Joulua 2018". And Noora's Finnish version of the same song: "Avaruus (with Noora Louhimo)". A bluegrass version: "Samuli Edelmann - Avaruus". For rocking Christmas: "Hanoi Rocks - Dead By X-Mas". And with children choir: "Haloo Helsinki! - Joulun kanssas jaan ft. Cantores Minores". One less rocking one with a harmonium and one which is rocking with children choir without being a rock song: "Lauri Tähkä - Konstan joululaulu" and "Lauri Tähkä - Sytytä mun sydämeni". This one is a hymn and has translation: "Suojelusenkeli, Maan korvessa kulkevi lapsosen tie - Samuli Edelmann".

I'd also recommend "Tulkoon Joulu" from Raskasta Joulua. Marko is featured in that one as well.
