What a joy listening to that, a huge Thankyou from me. I’m in my early 50’s and well on my way to financial independence, with real plans of retiring early. This is due in no small part to two individuals in my 20’s, Noel Whittaker and …. Paul Clithero. In a time of no real internet, these were the guys that taught me some of the fundamentals. Fundamentals that still ring true to this day. Thankyou Owen for the interview, and Thankyou to Paul.

You are so welcome - thank YOU for BRIEFLY sharing your story with me/us. Your journey to financial independence is exactly why I started the Rask in 2016 and why we do what we do 7 years later. I hope Rask can inspire another generation of hundreds of thousands of Aussies to take control of their own journey to financial independence, however that may look. Thanks again! Owen

@@Rask-invest hi Owen, yer I agree, each generation can be helped by Educators, Noel and Paul, we’re the educators of my time. Hopefully you can be one of the Educators of your generation. I liked Paul’s focus on Ethical, that’s so important. With Noel and Paul, that’s what you got, and it feels like you’re following in those ethical footsteps. Even though the fundamentals have stayed the same, Thankyou for educating this old bloke in the new world.

Great interview Owen. Would love an episiode on how to invest for children. Having a look into this, investing in children's name for them will cop a massive tax bill which doesn't seem smart. Would love to learn about other strategies.

Also, you may find our recent community discussions really interesting - Mitchell and a quite a few others can't stop talking about investing for kids. Monash Investors Small Companies fund has a MER of 4.34% and an ICR of 1.28%. Information obtained from Paul’s Investmart site. Monash Investors fact sheet states management fee is 1.3833% plus 20.5% performance fee (above their hurdle). Even the lower quoted fee is high. I’m a long term admirer of Paul’s and find this disappointing. One of you should have pointed this out.
@Rask-invest4 ай бұрын
Good spot. I don't invest with Monash - and it would take a lot of conviction for me to stomach higher fees (by the way, I'm not one of these people whose only consideration is fees - as I've seen too many times that using fees as the only guide is a *very dangerous* way to make investing, finance, health, business or life decisions). I wouldn't know enough about Monash, on-the-fly, to call it out during a live recording. However [a quick glance of website] shows the Monash fund has an MER is 1.28% with a performance fee over a decent benchmark (RBA + 5%, with a high watermark). I couldn't find the ICR but I did see that Monash has *absolutely crushed* the Small Ordinaries index over every single period beyond one month. WOW! That's impressive. I don't think I've ever seen that in my career. Past performance is not indicative of future performance, of course. And again, I don't invest with them. And probably won't. But boy, I wish I did! Proves to me once again that index investing is great for many things, but not for everything. Thanks for commenting and checking up, Annc! ~ Owen Rask

Lots and lots of good data backs immigration, especially ROI within the first 5 years and increasing our standard of living in Australia. Indirect benefits. But also some costs, and something to be mindful of, as you suggest. Thanks for commenting. ~ Owen

@@Rask-investUnfortunately immigration in the last 10 years particular has meant less education opportunities and less job opportunities for Australians. Chinese mothers are immigrating with 2 or 3 children while being funded by a Chinese father on the Chinese mainland. They are educated basically for free in the best public schools then pass year 12 with excellent grades often better than Australian born children then can bluff aptitude tests to study medicine, law and finance then graduate taking Australian jobs. Only 20% of medical students are born in Australia. Immigration needs to be severely constrained as there’s now a crucial social issue with a major deficit n housing that is unlikely to change for decades. It’s caused in combination with large amounts of capital mainly from Chinese investors pushing up property values to unsustainable levels for young home buyers. A working class area house is now over $1M. That requires a wage of at least 150k to fund that mortgage. The minimum wage is 45k. These is a dangerous times as there could easily be a revolution as is the case in the UK with anti migration sentiment. Nationalist groups uprising against Muslims for unsocial acts and Chinese for the above reasons. It’s great to own houses (for capital appreciation benefit) but not so for the young who are trying to get a start in life. It’s now 4 to 5 times less affordable to buy a house now than 30 to 35 years ago when the average Sydney housing price was below 100k. There’s no doubt in past generations immigration had its benefits for them and the country but it’s extremely doubtful (except if immigrants live in country towns where there are skill shortages) that Australians are benefiting from current immigration. There has to be a mandatory requirement for immigration now to stop the ‘rot’ for so many starting out and young Australian born students to be prioritised for education and jobs. Unfortunately that’s unlikely to happen due to deemed anti discrimination reasons.

Depending upon the people who come here. Do their skills and ideology benefit the Australian ideals!
