Mr. Barnatt, there's another impressive thing about this home computer, it's made in the UK. I wish here in the US we had a company manufacturing home computers again. Such a pity Commodore didn't survive it's crummy management team, they were literally just up the road from where I live (about an hour and half away). Sure, we have Apple, but they think their poop doesn't stink and charge ten times the price for it...UGH. --- and all their stuff is made in China.

11:51 Brilliantly summed up, Christopher. I'm an 'oldie' too and started off with a Sinclair Spectrum in 1983. At school we had a Research Machines 380Z, at college Commodore PET and RM Nimbus computers. The first computer I had a proper tutorial with in a classroom was a Tandy TRS80 at an event put on by Tandy in Birmingham city centre in about 1982/3. It's amazing how we've gone from little boxes (micro computers) to big boxes (PCs) back to little boxes (mobile computing and System On a Chip). Chris, I pre-date you a little, I got into computing when my employers moved off a Leo lll (tape operating system) onto an ICL system 4.50 mainframe. A vast roomful of iron boxes connected by 2" fat cables, it had wonderous new random access storage (3x 8mb exchangeable disc drives that I once put my back out lifting) but less ram and processing power than a poundshop calculator..... plus a separate building full of hvac plant and power provision. No such thing as networks. In fact no such thing as screens (not even green ones), because delay line memory functionality (buffering) hadn't been invented yet. We had a teletype, cards/paper tape and hundreds of reel to reel tapes. I finished in systems engineering and design in 2014. Still at it today but nobody is willing to pay me for it any more! .... and yes, I had a zx81.
@svenmorgenstern95064 жыл бұрын
Likewise, sort of. I got into the game ca. 1980, on DEC hardware (PDP 11/45), and courtesy of the Great Recession, the little niche market I worked in (multivalue databases) went the way of the Passenger Pigeon, and nobody wanted to hire a 40+ year old programmer/analyst with an outdated skill set. So...jumped ship, and went into healthcare. Still remember the day I got access to a real, live UNIX box to play with (PDP 11/24 with BSD 2.9 for an OS) and fell in love with it. Fast forward to today - using Linux Mint 20 as my daily driver, quad-core CPU, 4 GB RAM, All this lovely hardware and software, but no one'll pay me to work on it. Bittersweet, but I've got an exam in 3 hours - back to studying...

Neat!! And amazing. My first computer was a Sinclair ZX-80, with a membrane keyboard that hooked up to an old analog black-and-white TV. Advertised at the time as being the first computer for under $200, it came in at $199.95 - so the fact that this Pi 400 is about 1/2 the cost, pretty amazing. (even less if you factor in inflation). The Sinclair, BTW came with a whopping 1K (yes, you read that right, 1K of memory) and a tiny BASIC language. Funny thing was the memory looped around itself so if your program got too large, it would start overwriting itself! An optional memory expansion, I believe 16K, cost more than the computer itself. I traded up to a TRS-80 model III, quite a few more computers in the interim, now I've got a HP Z620 with dual core Xeon processors for a total of 16 cores, 32 hyperthreads, and 96 GB of RAM. Got it used on Amazon for $560. But this Pi looks like a fun machine - just might get one, for old times' sake and in a sense go back to the future, albeit on steroids from what I started with! Thanks for the overview!

Once again, here’s a very cool instructive and clear video from Explaining Computers. Shared on Facebook! As a tribute to those very early form factors that started many of us in computers, many years ago! Yes, I am that old! LOL! I had a wry smile on my face Chris, as you explained that simple historical fact! I said, in a few moments I bet he is going to show a ZX81! Then you actually did! I haven’t seen you as excited before Chris! LOL! I know why! As it’s definitely the focus of the Raspberry Pi Foundation to educate and inspire more computer lovers and future experts! That is something evidently also dear to your heart Chris! I only hope that thousands, if not millions of those Pi400’s end up in the hands of excited children, girls and boys this Christmas or whatever festive celebration in their country affords such a fun golden learning opportunity present! I salute your continued professionalism in educating us all and “Explaining Computers” Chris! Thanks very much indeed from Japan! May you long continue to do so Chris!

This is the answer to my prayers :) I think i will be replacing my office computer with this and use it as a thin client. I was using an older rpi 3 as a thin client to connect to a VM running on an ovirt cluster. This looks very nice, and it reminds me of my first computer, a schneider (amstrad) cpc64, which was already like 10 yrs old when i got it. I think i'm going to wait for the 8 gb model though :)

@paulmilligan30074 жыл бұрын
A full size HDMI with a standard (heavy) HDMI cable would probably make the setup less physically stable; the supplied lightweight HDMI cable is a good solution for a domestic setup with the pi a few feet from the TV.

It's all going to connect to full size anyway. Why not go full size all the way? Besides, from my experience with Raspi2, it's just as stable either way. The difference is that I won't misplace the cable and having to hunt a non-standard HDMI cable. With standard HDMI plug, I can just borrow any TV without having to bring my own cable.

I love the keyboard-is-the-case form factor. I've never used a computer where the keyboard was basically the case. I was too young for the Commodore 64 and have never used computers of that form factor. First PC was an IBM clone with two 5.25" floppy drives. I only know about their existence from people like James Rolfe, 8-Bit Guy, and LGR.

Joke at the beginning of the temperature part, had a good laugh. Monty Python style. I like it. Impressive cooling. Would really like to see you poke around inside it in a future video, if possible. I've been thinking about using really slim blower laptop fans for slim cases like this. I'm sure you'd have to 'mod' a few things to do that. My xmas gift list should be pretty odd...
@gdutfulkbhh75374 жыл бұрын
Others have poked around inside; you’ll easily find a teardown video. Just one thing bugs me, personally: no camera connector. I think I’ll wait for a speed bump on an 8gb model that I can put in a homebuilt case... though this is definitely an attractive bundle for various other use cases.

I dont actually type much on the pi 400 because I use vnc connected to my main computer. But its a nice little computer.. and its running cool. The extra speed it has compared to the pi 4 makes it very responsive. Thank you for your computer explanations ... !

When the keyboard was initially released, I thought about an idea where I put a Raspberry Pi Zero into the keyboard. However, this is even better.
@ashwinmenon764 жыл бұрын
I had the same idea. I also thought of making a barebones linux install using buildroot that booted straight to the Fuse speccy emulator. A buildroot linux image boots in just about 5 seconds on an rpi0, and feels much closer to the old 8-bitters than a full fat linux distro does 🙂
@keithmiller96654 жыл бұрын
OK, after playing with this for several days during the Wales, UK firebreak doing lots of ffmpeg based h264 / 265 video transcoding I found that the Pi 400 can run up to +20C compared to using an Ice Tower with a regular Pi 4 4GB, e.g 66 C v 47C. Now most people don’t run video transcodes for hours like me. I ran ffmpeg libx265 CRF 20 for 15+hours (0.043x with 41 mins input file). So definitely usable from a temperature if not performance perspective. On the downside I had a boot USB 3 SSD connected and found that like the Sinclair ZX81 from the early 1980s the connector comes out far too easily thereby freezing the Pi 400. It is crying out for an internal storage option. Just move the keyboard and the USB 3 SSD interface link is interrupted. Sticking with MicroSD might be a better option.
