I just finished overhauling the entire Raspberry Pi section of the website and put together a short video that sums up the basics of what most people would need to know. I tried to approach the video both as a beginner introduction to the RPi gaming scene and a refresher for people who've been out of the loop. Detailed information, including links to hardware and software (config.txt) configurations are all available here: www.retrorgb.c...
I've been 240p gaming on RPi's since the beginning and the entire scene has changed so much since I started. Now, things like using HDMI to Component adapters that were previously complicated and finnicky solutions are now excellent ways to get analog signal from a Pi. Also, the software used to launch games has been streamlined and there's some really amazing solutions available. With the addition of Raspberry Pi 4 support comes the possibility for using runahead modes, which means there's the potential for extremely low-lag gaming on certain arcade board or console emulation!
If you liked this video, please consider supporting in any way: www.retrorgb.c...
All equipment used to shoot this video can be found here: www.amazon.com...

I bought the RGB-Pi a few months ago and i"m completely satisfied. I use it for Neo-Geo and arcade games on a consumer grade CRT. Which means anyone doing this will also need a scart to component transcoder. The software is really good, too!

RGB-PI is the best and more consumer friendly way to do it, at least for the person not very familiarised with mini computers and computing in general (like me). Almost plug and play, and in the best possible quality.

One advantage of going with the HDMI to DAC solution as opposed to the hats is that you can do both 240p and 480i. Also, while Recalbox has a couple of disadvantages, I've found it to be the best for non-composite analogue output, as it offers great customization of specific video mode for each emulator/core, ES menu, global video, kodi, etc. This is great for SD CRTs to set some things to 480i like the menu or media player, and even better for multisync monitors that support higher scan rates.

I’d really love to see a CRT-lag test comparing real arcade board vs Pi vs Mister Vs GroovyMame so I’d know once and for all what’s best way to emulate arcade boards
@lancepage1914
@lancepage1914 8 ай бұрын
That's easy, the data does exist so we don't need to waste time re-testing this. It goes: Arcade board = Mister < GroovyMAME < Pi. Mister is about 2ms faster to GroovyMAME. But comically 2ms means a world of difference to some people. Mister is quite pricey and can be difficult to acquire and doesn't emulate as many games, hence why I use GroovyMAME the most. A PC will always kill Pi no questions asked.

But when I plug the component cables into the Trinitron, I get a noise signal. I've heard it may be because not all trinitrons support Progressive Scan. Is that correct? Anything I can do to get RGB from a Pi3B+ on my Trinitron? I can get a model number if needed.

Hi, whats about that GPIO to SCART cable is there some information how to maybe DIY it? I'm not afraid to cut one because yesterday I got myself a sharp tv with only one scart input on the backside. The guy who sold it to me showed with a cable from a receiver how it really displayed something so all good it works but I have trouble with my Pi and A/V out cable to get a picture at all. Right now I'd use a 3,5mm plug into the pi with RCA cables on the other side. These ones go then in a RCA to SCART adapter since I'm not sure about this whole order thingy where video/gnd/aud is I will today try with direct soldering how you did on the under side. But literally nothing has happened say if at least I would have gotten some glitchy signal I'd know I messed something up but changing the config and cmdline.txt plus what appears to me the right cable didnt work at all. So I'd be interested in maybe make this gpio scart cable too just in case

All of those are great ways to experience software emulation...as long as you're outputting a resolution your CRT can accept. Remember that most CRT's are 15KHz, so 240p or 480i only. The point of using a RPi is easy 240p output.

good video Bob, one question, what about the modelines? how do the software distributions deal with this? each console has its specific 240p timings, with at least one or more resolutions. do they handle the specific timings per console/ game or just have one for all? the rpi2jamma / rpi2scart (French board you mentioned months ago) deals with a specific modelines per console and per game if needed.

So far I only tested NES but I compared my Wii using HD Retrovision Component cables and ran Retroarch 1.9 @ 240p with all the shader crap turned off, threw on the Composite pallette and then compared it to real hardware and it looked and played amazing on my Sony 20FS100. @@Chris-Courage Mednafen for Wii hasn't been updated since like 2012 unless there's a fork I'm not aware of. Definitely give RetroArch another go - the default settings are nothing short of horrendous, so perhaps Mednafen looks better stock but the underlying engine is surely long dated by now. With RetroArch defaults it's blurry af and you have to turn off all shaders, remove threaded video, put on a better palette, and really just remove anything whatsoever that's catered to an LCD. I even had some success with the Run Ahead Latency at 1 frame to remove the input lag from using a Wiimote. Seemed to remove what tiny little lag the Wiimote's bluetooth introduced.

I have to decide exactly which model to buy, recommendations are accepted! Thanks for the video. Can Rpi break/kill a PVM/CRT monitor due to digital to analog (hdmi to analog) signal/frequence difference in time? What adapter/cable to use to avoid such issue while emulating retro games via Rpi(4) connected to a Sony PVM?
@lancepage1914
@lancepage1914 8 ай бұрын
All these so-called 'issues' are in fact all non-issues. Raspberry Pi will not break or kill your CRT provided it can actually display a proper picture. If it doesn't display properly, then the modeline you have selected is simply incompatible with the CRT and it will look doubled or warped. Just don't leave your CRT on for long periods of time when this happens and it won't damage your CRT. With CRT what you see is what you get, you can be rest assured if it doesn't look right then it isn't right at all. Digital to analog video conversion has no ill effect on your CRT, and if it did - then how else could you possibly achieve Pi to CRT? As for 'an adapter that avoids issues' - you have dreamt up an issue that's not even there. Because the whole point of this video is that Raspberry Pi is capable of displaying picture on just about any CRT, unless of course you want to buy an adapter that costs as much as a Pi to do what the Pi can do already out of the box?

@@facufeg86 I figured it out. You should use: hdmi_cvt=320 240 60 1 0 0 0 hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=87 In config.txt. The line hdmi_ctv creates a custom resolution with some other parameters (it's all in the raspberrypi.org docs), and then you select that custom resolution using the group 2 and mode 87. This is reserved for custom modes, and it's equivalent to DMT 87 HDMI (in recalbox.conf). And then in recalbox.conf you can use a different resolution for Emulation Station, selecting another mode like CEA 6 HDMI. Like this: system.es.videomode=CEA 6 HDMI That line is commented with a semicolon, you should remove that in order to make it work. One thing that happened to me, is that every time I disconnect the power from the HDMI converter I should force another resolution in the config and fallback to the custom one I've created. Otherwise it goes out of sync or make some weird effects on the image. I don't know if thats something exclusive to my adaptor.

This really depends on what your TV can do. Because a HDMI to Component Transcoder is a completely different method to RGB Pi which is a hat for the Pi the outputs to SCART. If your TV has a component video in, then use HDMI to Component Transcoder. If your TV has SCART, then use RGB Pi. If your TV has composite video in only, then use the Pi AV 3.5mm cable for it and use that.

I'm still very ignorant with all of this, so sorry for my dumb question, but is it possible to just plug an HDMI to Component in Raspberry Pi to a CRT TV then? To me it sounds like a quick setup for a decent image quality, but I'm still not sure if I got that right. English isn't my first language. Thanks in advance.

That will work, as long as you set the RPi to output 240p. Check out this page and scroll down to "HDMI to VGA/YPbPr Component Converters": www.retrorgb.com/rpi240p.html

πcrt Created by by Antonio Villena It's the same as RGB-Pi except without the short ass scart cable. Options goes from VGA->Scart cable (1.5m long) generates 12V to force TV to switch Scart at 4:3 aspect mode. VGA->Scart adapter It outputs stereo sound without need of external jack cable. It has internally a DC-DC inverter to generate 12V to force TV to switch Scart at 4:3 aspect mode VGA->Composite/S-Video adapter And its only 10€ for the base model and 15€ with the vga to scart cable. Last time i checked RGB-PI was 32€! So please Bob put this info on the site.

For the RetroTINK Ultimate, yes, that's totally fine, just set the output to RGBs. For the basic "GERT666" adapter, it won't work, since it's sending sync through both signals.
