I’d really love to see a CRT-lag test comparing real arcade board vs Pi vs Mister Vs GroovyMame so I’d know once and for all what’s best way to emulate arcade boards
@lancepage191410 ай бұрын
That's easy, the data does exist so we don't need to waste time re-testing this. It goes: Arcade board = Mister < GroovyMAME < Pi. Mister is about 2ms faster to GroovyMAME. But comically 2ms means a world of difference to some people. Mister is quite pricey and can be difficult to acquire and doesn't emulate as many games, hence why I use GroovyMAME the most. A PC will always kill Pi no questions asked.

One advantage of going with the HDMI to DAC solution as opposed to the hats is that you can do both 240p and 480i. Also, while Recalbox has a couple of disadvantages, I've found it to be the best for non-composite analogue output, as it offers great customization of specific video mode for each emulator/core, ES menu, global video, kodi, etc. This is great for SD CRTs to set some things to 480i like the menu or media player, and even better for multisync monitors that support higher scan rates.

@@facufeg86 I figured it out. You should use: hdmi_cvt=320 240 60 1 0 0 0 hdmi_group=2 hdmi_mode=87 In config.txt. The line hdmi_ctv creates a custom resolution with some other parameters (it's all in the raspberrypi.org docs), and then you select that custom resolution using the group 2 and mode 87. This is reserved for custom modes, and it's equivalent to DMT 87 HDMI (in recalbox.conf). And then in recalbox.conf you can use a different resolution for Emulation Station, selecting another mode like CEA 6 HDMI. Like this: system.es.videomode=CEA 6 HDMI That line is commented with a semicolon, you should remove that in order to make it work. One thing that happened to me, is that every time I disconnect the power from the HDMI converter I should force another resolution in the config and fallback to the custom one I've created. Otherwise it goes out of sync or make some weird effects on the image. I don't know if thats something exclusive to my adaptor.

@lancepage191410 ай бұрын
All these so-called 'issues' are in fact all non-issues. Raspberry Pi will not break or kill your CRT provided it can actually display a proper picture. If it doesn't display properly, then the modeline you have selected is simply incompatible with the CRT and it will look doubled or warped. Just don't leave your CRT on for long periods of time when this happens and it won't damage your CRT. With CRT what you see is what you get, you can be rest assured if it doesn't look right then it isn't right at all. Digital to analog video conversion has no ill effect on your CRT, and if it did - then how else could you possibly achieve Pi to CRT? As for 'an adapter that avoids issues' - you have dreamt up an issue that's not even there. Because the whole point of this video is that Raspberry Pi is capable of displaying picture on just about any CRT, unless of course you want to buy an adapter that costs as much as a Pi to do what the Pi can do already out of the box?

Will the Rgb-pi cable work out of the box or do you have to install the software?

I think just connecting my pc to my tv with a long hdmi cord to a component converter is a better idea every day. That or softmodding my 360 and just playing games through that!

All of those are great ways to experience software emulation...as long as you're outputting a resolution your CRT can accept. Remember that most CRT's are 15KHz, so 240p or 480i only. The point of using a RPi is easy 240p output.

Any news on rpi interlace resolutions fiasco? No interlaced modes is a really hindering situation…

can i use vga to 5bnc and only connect 4bnc or is the cable different? Thank you

For the RetroTINK Ultimate, yes, that's totally fine, just set the output to RGBs. For the basic "GERT666" adapter, it won't work, since it's sending sync through both signals.

Some of these cable options can be found at your local Goodwill.

5:09 "there's a new solution that..." and then doesn't say the name of the product.... How do I buy something I don't know the name of ;-;
@RetroRGB4 жыл бұрын
The name of the solution is written right on the device in the shot.

@@RetroRGB searching "rgr development" or "rgr-vga666rgb5" doesn't give me anything. Can you just give me the name of it or a link to it? It doesn't look like the retrotink and retrotink hats are almost impossible to find now so if it's in production, I wanna try to buy one.
