What about the method that you and Mike Chi talked about in a video where you use a cheap HDMI to component, and set it to a super resolution, something like 2500something x 240, and the component converter reads that and displays a proper 240p signal. Is there a tutorial for that for a Linux noob like myself? I see lots of discussions on it, but can't find a tutorial to learn from to save my life.

I understand that outputting directly at 240p is desired because that is the original resolution of the games being emulated. What is the advantage of doing it over VGA? Most VGA display devices would be 480p or better. Any clarification would help -- I must be missing something here. Is it just to get the image directly viewable on non-HDMI displays?

Don't think of it as "VGA", just think of it as RGBHV through a VGA-style connector. The purpose is to connect a RPi to an RGBs setup.

I don't think so. I'd really like someone to build a startup menu that launches in 480i, which allows you to select between VGA and HDMI - This one one Pi can support both. So I have the gert 666 vga card all soldered and plugged in. I copy-n-pasted your command line into the config.txt file (at the end). Then rebooted and my life has turned to crap. When I connect to a VGA port (and monitor) I get a message on the monitor that reads, "The current input timing is not supported by the monitor display. Please change the timing to 1280x1024@60hz or any other monitor timing as per the monitor specifications". And to make matters worse, the command line has turned off the HDMI socket. I don't use windows and right now I cannot access my raspberry Pi as the monitor connections are effectively shut down. Any suggestions?
@RetroRGB8 жыл бұрын
That means your monitor isn't compatible with 240p. Also, as soon as you add the code for analog, it shuts off the HDMI port. You'll have to format and start again.
@markplain25558 жыл бұрын
I managed to re-code the SDI card the issue is the selection dpi and mode. The code should read: dpi_group=2 dpi_mode=35 Then my monitor is covered. the mode given in the video is for another type of monitor. Problem solved on my side.
@markplain25558 жыл бұрын
Sorry for any misunderstanding but my intention was purely to get the Gert 666 VGA adapter to work. That was the impression I had from your video. Luckily I did not have to format and start again. All I did was (after a little more google research) take out the SDI card, insert it into an SDI slot on another computer, search the config.txt file, open the file (on a simple reader) and change the code you attached, save the file, re-insert it into the Raspberry Pi, turn it on and ..... presto! I guess the word of advice to anyone watching this video is that: 1. be careful you may just shut down your entire raspberry pi 2. look up the other resolution related codes and select one right for your selected screen as you only have 1 shot to get the screen resolution right.

Great tutorial! I was wondering: how does this setup handle 480i content? Does it depend on the emulator? Also, what about the various resolutions that are not quite 240p like the GBA or mame? I don't suppose something like this is possible on the Pi (yet), is it?

Hey, man. Thanks for the breakdown. Attempted this using GERT VGA 666 to VGA-to-Component to my Trinitron with no luck. Scrambled black and white picture. Any suggestions?
@ibhey90058 жыл бұрын
Whoops, I'm a dope. Pretty new to this and thought a simple VGA-to-component cable would finish the job, but my Trini will only accept a signal up to 480i, so that's not going to cut it. Now I'm thinking GERT VGA > VGA-to-S-Video/Composite Converter. Wondering if this will work with your configuration.
@RetroRGB8 жыл бұрын
The GERT will be outputting in 240p, so if you used a VGA to component converter, it should work fine on your trinitron. If you're using composite video, I believe you can just get a cable for that. I'm not sure what the config.txt settings would be though.
@ibhey90058 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I figured if it's scaling down to 240p on the Pi configuration level, there should be no issue, but the picture just goes crazy. Same exact output I got when using the Radioshack HDMI to Component cable @WeArePolyGlot has been messing with (www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-hdmi-to-component-converter?gclid=Cj0KEQiAw_DEBRChnYiQ_562gsEBEiQA4LcsslNhX5kI4io4rjDuvIXno-cU5voFYu3YRqLxMrmId48aAsks8P8HAQ). For that, I noticed the documentation only allowed for 480p minimum, and again, my TV only allows up to 480i, so that made sense I think...Your method I was very confident would work though as I figured it would be 240p out of the gate. You mention a "converter," so you should know that I was just using a VGA to Component cable which I guess was just transmitting the VGA signal rather than scaling anything down. If I'm off the rails here, your guidance is more than welcome. In any case, thanks to you and everyone else busting ass on this for your work. I've been following and will continue to follow it closely.
@RetroRGB8 жыл бұрын
Well, HDMI to component would require a different config file. It's most likely that the converters just don't accept 240p.

I got a vga666 and planned on using it with a 34" arcade monitor. I naively thought I could just wire H+V and connect to the H for composite sync. But, I'm guessing lack of v-sync inversion foiled this plan. My next step? I was thinking about buying an RGB amp from Ultimarc. I'm not sure if it really needs amplification, but this little device also appears to do the c-sync conversion. Can anyone share their experience with arcade monitors?
@RetroRGB7 жыл бұрын
You should do a lot of research on this before attempting, as different arcade monitors will require different setups. Also, just wiring H&V won't work. I suggest posting on arcade forums to see exactly what you need, but if you're already using a JAMMA setup, I'd suggest getting a Pi2JAMMA.
@erikspen7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I remembered I have an old J-Pac lying around, and it appears to have the same circuitry as the RGB amp I was considering, plus it's worked on this arcade monitor before, so I'll try hooking this up inline with the VGA666, and run a hacked Jamma connector (w/ power for the j-pac) to the monitor, to see if it'll do the H/V conversion to C-Sync. These were pretty common 10 years ago, so I may have a good result to report back soon that others can use.
@erikspen7 жыл бұрын
Update. It worked, but first had to add 5V to Pin 3 of the VGA connector to power the J-pac, which I did by running a wire over from pin 2 of the GPIO.
@quasimodo14277 жыл бұрын
erikspen, I in the same boat as you with a Wells Gardner 25 Inch monitor, Jpac and retropie. Before I buy the vga666 could you make a quick video on your setup. I haven't seen any thing like this on KZbin. Thanks
@erikspen7 жыл бұрын
Really, it's just soldering a short wire on top of the VGA66, connecting the two pins I mentioned above. This'll give the Jpac 5V for power. The reason you don't see it elsewhere is because it's only good for displaying video, and doesn't route all the other Jpac controls to the Pi. In my case, I was using the usb for controls instead.

I plan to run some tests with 240p test suite and see if battletoads is beatable on the nes emulator (that is the real deal lag test for me).... the quality of the rgb signal does not look as good as actual hardware however this might be because I am using a cheap scart cable I had lying around. Have you noticed any differences in video quality compared to actual hardware?... all in all the RPI is an awesome choice for arcade gaming but I wont be playing nes kodi snes or genesis on it.

I've only really been testing arcade games and I thought the quality was excellent. It was actually much better then a few PC-based rigs I've seen.

how do you run 480p through vga? And can you use the hdmi port at the same time?

You'd have to customize the code. I'm not sure how to do that.

So, for anyone interested, I was able to get this going on a consumer CRT (Sony Trinitron WEGA 24") via component after much trial and error. In addition to the instructions in the video, some extra hardware was needed to properly carry the VGA signal from the Pi/GERT 666 VGA to the component inputs in the television. I did some research and found a guy whose circumstances were similar except he was using VGA to connect a PC to a television similar to mine for the purposes of building a homemade arcade cabinet. To achieve this, he used a VGA to Component transcoder by Audio Authority (9A60A) between the PC and television and posted some screen shots that seemed to demonstrate that it worked. Well, as I'd hoped, it works here too and result is gorgeous. Near perfect, but with a few kinks I'll get into below. Here's the result: imgur.com/a/sf9Ya You'll need the GERT 666 VGA Adapter. They're on Amazon now, piss cheap and Prime One-Day eligible. This is the one I'm using and it's just fine: www.amazon.com/Makerfocus-Raspberry-VGA666-Adapter-Board/dp/B01MTUBZA2/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1487622740&sr=8-1&keywords=gert+666 This will output your audio from the 3.5mm A/V out. Keep in mind, for some reason Red's video and Yellow and White are your stereo plugs, but again, works great: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007V6JCK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Finally the transcoder, which comes with a VGA cable you'll obviously need if you don't have one already: www.amazon.com/Audio-Authority-Component-Transcoder-Audio/dp/B00ASVXAFI/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1487623042&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+authority+9A60a Hook it all up, alter your config file with the settings RetroRGB and Pete Sommer have shared, and you're good to go. Is it a cheap solution? Not the cheapest, but it won't hit your wallet as hard as some other ways you could go. "Daisy chaining" of cables is also to a minimum and you won't need to screw around with modifying any cables if, like me, you don't know what the hell you're doing. Now, some things I've noticed. The config settings here default to Sega Genesis, and that emulator's going to look great other than the fact that the image seems to be shifted slightly to right and therefore a little cut off. This is true of any emulator I've tried, so open to suggestions there. Once you switch to something else (NES, SNES), you're going to see that some pixels bunch up and it creates something of a noticeable "ripple effect" when playing a scrolling game like Mario. I'd guess this is simply because the native resolution of the SNES and NES are different than that of the Genesis. Switching the config file to uncomment the timings for these systems made it much worse, at least in my experience. It would be nice if there were a way to automatically switch to proper resolution based on core being used. A project called "RGB-Pi," which is based on use of a modified GPIO to Scart cable and a custom OS for the Pi seems to be working toward this goal. I don't know if what they're doing can be looped into the VGA method, but here's the site: www.rgb-pi.com/ Anyway, there aren't as many people on the internet trying to do this as you'd maybe think. It'd be nice if there were a place we could all congregate and discuss. Just a thought.

I've seen a few people going from an HDMI to VGA adapter and into a JPAC.. I'm confused at how this is possible unless the HDMI can output at 15khz and it was my understanding that it could not.. either way for the price of this GPIO device there's no point it messing with all that :)

Hello, I have a 15Khz VGA to SCART cable and a compatible RGB TV, is it possible to use something like this GeekPi VGA666 adapter from Amazon (www.amazon.com/GeeekPi-VGA666-Adapter-Breakout-Raspberry/dp/B01M5GBSQO) and the settings mentioned in the website to go with it? then something like a power supply that gives 9v to the VGA-SCART cable to power it so it runs? I'm willing to dedicate a Pi3 to this (and I've been crazy for it so this is really good news for me!) so I want to be 100% sure it will work before spending any money. Thanks in advance.

so I ran a lag test. and I am a bit disappointed with the pi. Here is the setup: RPi>gert666>USMC>pvm I compared this to a modded snes mini>pvm. I am using snes 240p testsuite (the snes version) and running a "manual lag test". I use an everdrive with the snes. The results: average of 1.2 frames lag original hardware (this is due to my slow ass and not the hardware) vs average of 3.5 frames lag RPi... :( don't think I will be playing Battletoads on the RPi anytime soon. Anybody got any ideas how to reduce lag on the RPi? Could the USMC be introducing any lag?...by the way I hate lag. Lag is what started me down this rabbit hole of rgb/pvm etc. I couldn't beet the clinger winger stage on Battletoads using my emulator and flatscreen. Next thing you know my living room looks like a shrine to 1990s retro gaming :-l
@RetroRGB7 жыл бұрын
So the RPi is about 2 frames of lag slower then the SNES? That's actually excellent and about as good as it gets for software emulation at the moment. Until FPGA emulation is available for all these consoles, you won't see too much of an improvement. That's why I ONLY use emulation for arcade games, since there's literally no other option then to buy console ports of the games (which often suck), or the arcade boards themselves. As an FYI, both the gert and USMC add zero lag.
@rigel43797 жыл бұрын
Yea, someone else told me the same thing--that these are good results, he also told me about some settings I can change in retroarch to reduce lag. I am going to try them out and run another test. I can let you know the results if your interested. Thanks for the info on the gert and the USMC...I would like to get the lag down a little bit, I think it would improve game play with fighting games (there are a lot of good arcade fighting games)... but I might be tripping. I'm not sure if the lag is effecting my game play with fighting games.

on my to do of building the perfect arcade, the VGA666 solves my previous issue of having to use a bulky scan converter, but it also messes up something that was working well: the soft power on/off button :( (this was working perfect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ap-3pq1_jpWcac0) -> do you have any tips on how to power on/off the pi safely - when the VGA666 is installed?
