Raspberry Pi Pico - LORA Remote Gate Monitor

Here is a description of how to make two Raspberry Pi Pico systems with an attached LORA WAN module to communicate wirelessly over huge distances. These are configured to operate peer to peer so they don't need to connect to the Lora Wan Network. One device is attached to my front gate and it can communicate with a device 300m away in my house.
When the gate is opened it sends a JSON formatted text message to the house device that logs the event and plays a door bell style tone.
A LED on the house end device flashes a number of times to indicate how many times the gate has been opened and a web page publishes to the internal WIFI network a log of when the most recent events occurred. Other status information is also available on the web page.

Congratulation on the 1K Dave! Welldone on your gate alert system. Im thinking about a similar arrangement, but my driveway is much easier than yours its lessthan 100m to the house. I just got a ESP32 cam working with guidance from experts at my mensshed. I have not made it portable yet so I have no idea whether it will work over the distances your pi works, specially with video.

Hi Greg, Thanks for noticing the 1K. Been a long slow process. At 999 had a couple of unsubscribes. Apparently people don’t like my horse shorts 🤠 LoRa protocol isn’t designed for high bandwidth stuff like photos and videos. It’s simply text. You can jam a string of characters in one end and they come out the other. Sure you could encode / decode a picture into text but it would be slow. Email still works that way as far as I know 🤠 The resources on the pico are also tiny and I think I’m starting to bump into the memory limits. Off the top of my head the RAM is 256KB and the flash storage is about 2MB But it can certainly still do a lot with very little power. I had a quick look at you ESP cam and it looks good. 100m is a long way for wifi but you may be able to do it with a directional antenna. It depends on how much power it puts out. Some wifi devices have country settings because different countries have different rules for frying the brains of there population. Pick a country that doesn’t care and you get more range 🤠 It’s actually more about population density and interference with neighbours wifi. David
