@@marslif Theoretically you're going to get slightly better throughput on the PCIE bus than USB3.0. They actually have the same theoretical throughput limit, but since in the RPI the usb chip is behind the PCIE 2.0 x1 bus, you have to add a translation layer with no possible speed increase. Practically, putting an NVME board on the PCIE bus is a simpler translation than going from PCIE->USB3(host)->USB3(client)->(SATA or NVME).

@@jyvben1520 If I remember right didn't they say this board could accommodate up to a 24 v power supply for industrial applications? If that is the case, don't see a reason why this might not be able to handle a RTX 3090 provided you can work out the problem with the PCIe connector limitation. I am just learning a lot of this so forgive this for what it is. The GPIO handles varying voltage outputs yes? Would it be unrealistic to make a GPIO to the power connection on the 3090?
@ErilynOfAnachronos
@ErilynOfAnachronos 4 жыл бұрын
I doubt the board can handle 15 Ampère, so an additional power supply will be necessary. I assume someone will get it working, but with a huge performance penalty due to bandwidth limits. So no, it can't run Crysis. 😜

Most likely not. Nvidia's drivers are binary only and closed source. They don't have an ARM version for Linux yet though that is somewhat likely to change(don't keep hopes up). HOWEVER, AMD has open source drivers so you might be able to plug a Big Navi card into it though you may need(or may not) a pc power supply

The IO board is brilliant. As long as future modules maintain the same form factor, all you would have to do is upgrade to the next gen board and keep going. The only downside to losing the DIMM side is there are a few products that just came out that depend on that interface. Be nice to see a second iteration of the CM4 come with the same DIMM interface or at least another board that it can connect to. Maybe a DIMM adapter that will fit the PCIe 1 slot to carry over.

To use a baseball expression, the RPi Foundation has really 'hit it out of the park' recently with the CM4 and the RPi 400 - standing ovation !! The CM4 I/O board is a great companion but I consider it a version 1 product. I really hope that a newer version will include all USB3 ports and PCIe v3 x4 which almost all NVMe flash storage cards are designed to. Due to the published CAD files other vendors probably have this in the works already. Also looking forward to HATs and cases that will make multiple drive (say RAID 6 HDD) NAS solutions possible.

Make an expansion board designed specifically for making tablets and sell it together with a touchscreen with at least one camera on it. Of course this board must have battery support and can discard ethernet in favour of some other nicety. And the PCIe must be converted into a MiniPCIe slot like on them laptops. And bang, you have entered the Tablet market big time.

The only possible problem I see with this is having to use the built-in PCB antenna of the CM4, since you wouldn't want to stick that u.FL bulkhead connector on your tablet, or re-certify it with another. Here's hoping RPi Foundation will make another u.FL option with a flat antenna you can stick inside the casing like laptops have.

Great!! Just ordered one. BTW is the software on the Pi4 usable on this module? Can I take my SD card from my Pi 4 and use the SD card on this module ? or does this have a completely different software that I need to download

But why not already have USB 3 on board? Sorry if this is a silly question but I am to alk of this.

The IEEE1588 is a great addition, will it offer much customization in terms of PTP profiles? any plan of bringing this same chipset over to RPi4? Looks great!

Hi RPI guys, just wondering if you will produce GPIO-only dongle for this module without any need to use mother board. I need more powerful substitution for RPI Zero W with at least 2GB of RAM, but I don't need any PCI-X or HDMI or USB ports from your mother board for CM4. Or maybe you've got some plans to substitute your legacy RPI Zero W with something modern and more powerful?
