I like all breeds but man the Rat Terrier is special, I adopted a 6 month old female who's now aged 8 yrs. and her way of being able to read the situation, her alertness towards strangers, her way of ignoring yapping dogs as we are on our daily walks & her gentle way of showing her love towards me, just blows me away. I dread the day she goes away, just the thought makes my eyes wash up.

I have a genuine question. Why cut off their tails? This is no way shape or form of me judging you guys. I know its necessary for some dogs but why a rat terrier? I have one and her tail does not have any damage nor does it cause any damage.

If they are working dogs it keeps their tail from getting damaged while driving animals out of a burrow. In non working dogs it’s for aesthetics.. it’s the classic look

We lost our Rat Terrier Tink 4 weeks ago to cancer at 10yrs old. We got her as a pup from a puppy mill. She was a born hunter with a big appetite, never good around kids or dogs, our other Rats were not like that. If you ever have to get your pet euthanized , I STRONGLY recommend NOT doing it yourself, get a friend to do it, because you will suffer greatly with the constant visual reminder of it dying. I have to fight the memory, it can be overwhelming if allowed to, I see how dangerous PTSD can be now. We are waiting on a rescue Rat Terrier Mix Medium size tall female from our local Shelter. She will be our 5th Rat Terrier and last dog since we are old now. We Love dogs of all types, but the Rat is our favorite.

I just got a Boston Terrier puppy he is 10.7 weeks old and I picked him up at 8 weeks, we picked him out when he was 6 weeks old. We got one of the bigger if not the biggest male. The reason we picked him is because he was the calmest while holding the puppies, he didn't shake and wasn't nervous. I don't think this means you will have a calm dog, I think it means you will have an alpha confident, possibly dominant dog. I have had dogs were we got the more nervous puppy and they never had as much of a claiming space, dominant thing as the calm larger pups do

Hey, I adopted my rat terrier/fox terrier mix from a Houston shelter for $5 because her previous owners bought her from a breeder left her outside once she wasn’t a puppy anymore and didn’t take care of her. Long story short she got heartworms (Bc her old owners did not give her heartworm preventative every month)so bad that they were just going to put her to sleep. Thankfully I got her had her treated which nearly killed her but she is now been with me 4 years and is the best dog! We love her so much I encourage you to adopt even if it’s a mixed breed don’t shop and Don’t support breeders. Hope you find a new friend at a shelter and I am so sorry for the loss of your pup.

Lots of ratites are born with naturally bobbed tails through selective breeding. In other cases, as mentioned, it is a humane procedure for hunting dogs, who tend to break tails tunneling or flushing underbrush. A broken tail is a far more cruel and painful condition.
@maddison8914 жыл бұрын
It’s sad that you didn’t adopt a rat terrier from a shelter that needed a loving home.
@russellharp87614 жыл бұрын
Origin of cropped tails was identification for taxation purposes. A money making dog had a cropped tail, a pet didn't. The practice survived even though the requirement did not.
@gabului46734 жыл бұрын
@@maddison891 No need to shame others for buying, after all, it's their choice. I agree that adopting should be the option they look over first, but because they decided to buy doesn't mean you should shame them for it, you wouldn't want people making you feel like a terrible person.
