@@reign6of6e6terror certainly is an observation to take into consideration however, she does have regular vet check ups and she is not ill. She is fed a high fiber, low fat diet to control the fat, build up that captive bred possums often have issue with.

After I freed the opossum that I rescued, kept her for about a month, she would come running out of the bushes to greet me whenever I came home from work. Eventually she had a family and moved on. I named her Buttercup

I got a feeling that that wasn't right..... Then again who are we to argue with a wildlife "person" ? I feel like if we look at how possums curl their tails and where they curl it from maybe holding them a little bit lower on the tail is the way that they might feel more comfortable because she didn't seem to like that or like I said the area where it was held from. Their tail curls a little bit lower down that's where they grab from. Just my instinctual guess from what I felt after watching her react

It was implied in the video, but just to be clear never ever pick a rat (or mouse, or most rodents) up by the tail. Not only is it damaging to them, but they also have the ability “deglove,” which is a lovely term for removing the outer layer of skin. It’s as gross as it sounds and not ideal for the rat either.

An Opossum is not a rat and it's not a rodent either its a Marsupial. Rat Tails are used for balance Opossum hand by that tail upside down all day long so while thet may not like it it won't hurt them.

She is like oh hall no, don't even cuddle me! Opossum are super cool. I went to gather eggs one morning, I had forgotten and locked the coop door a few hours after dark the night before. When I checked the nest boxes. There were 3 baby Opossum. ADORABLE! I didn't touch them. I just opened up the coop and told the naughty egg suckers to go find momma. I came home from work and only had chickens in the coop. That was 8 years ago. And the last Opossum I've seen. I'm sad. I'm 3 miles from town, in the timber We should see them weekly if not daily.

So, I lost my sweet Poppy Possum last August. We rescued her from a metal feed bin in August. She was near death from the heat. After her recovery we realized she was blind in 1 eye, the ear on that side was split & she was starving probably from being unable to find & catch food due to her blindness. She was my baby. I was fortunate to share 2 yrs w/ her & we figured she was about a year old when we got her. I would take Peaches & her cute little eyes & love her to pieces too. Ppl should not pick up possums by the tail. They do not use it to support their entire body weight. It's used more like a 5th hand/leg for stabilizing themselves while climbing. Their dietary needs are pretty complicated & their health issues are as well--everything from Metabolic Bone Disease due to an incorrect calcium to protein diet to gyn issues for females. I promised Poppy that I'd spend the rest of my life advocating for possums lives to be protected & valued. So, I am doing that. I'm in the early stages of attempting to change my state's laws about rehabbing possums as well as educating our kids about their value & their contribution to the environment. @@josephdriesse1157 they surely do! Wish ppl knew things like their body temp being too low for rabies to take hold. They will clear a yard of ticks in just a couple days. I could go on. Here's the thing though, I've had pets all my life, dogs, cats, ferrets (another adorable misunderstood animal) but no other animal touched my soul like Poppy. Watching her deal w/ losing the life she knew while adjusting to this one, I could see the grace in her during that time. Nobody taught her about kindness or tolerance or hate. She simply adjusted to her new reality. It helped me to see that all the struggle & anger & screaming crying I sometimes did when dealing w/ unavoidable change was unnecessary & hurt me & everybody else around me. Grace is a better way to cope. Also Poppy didn't just accept what came w/ the new surroundings. She had boundaries: hated a bath, didn't really like or trust other ppl, etc. Anyway this is too long & I apologize. If ever you come across a possum in need or if anyone tells you of one, don't hesitate to contact me. My state won't certify rehabbers so I'm not certified but I still want to do all I can for them! The most important thing you can do in your education of the public to change their minds is let people know and make sure you get this verified because I was told this by possum Rescuers in California who rescued some baby possums who sadly survived the death of their mother who was poisoned by developers behind my property. Possums are an ancient animal that is not considered a mammal. It is my understanding they cannot pass along diseases such as rabies Etc like rats mice and other mammals. they do not have the same temperature as mammals. They are great for your yard they will eat the rats babies and the mice as well as its nest. They will eat the snails so don't poison the snails in your neighborhood don't call Terminix just call possums if everybody would have a possum in the yard instead of Terminix or a dog that would kill the possums or a cat that would be allowed out to hunt them at night you would end up having healthy clean yards and rural areas that would not be filled and littered with unwanted Vermin as well as bugs, slugs snails Etc. I guess you could say the stinky garbage can possum is Nature's natural Vermin cleaner. My home had such a beautiful yard and I never did a thing with it I just didn't have any horrible bugs slugs snails mice or rats to bother it I simply kept the trees trimmed and raked up the dead leaves at the end of the year the little possum and her family that lived just beyond my fence on the hillside had always kept it clean as well as our neighbors and there were a few possums throughout the area they were all poisoned by the Developers as well as the Hawks that hunted the area Etc. Never let it developer spray that green stuff they say oh it's to keep down the weeds since we've turned over the dirt to put in the new housing it is full of herbicide and a product that basically kills all living life as it goes into their bloodstream and turns it in to Crystal glass. I don't know if the baby possums were able to survive I know that they had dragged themselves from my backyard with their mother had died trying to save them dragging them away from their home knowing something was horribly wrong above them and they had crawled out to my driveway. Maybe finding that concrete was only the safe place they knew existed at that moment. My husband had had a possum who lived in his manufacturing plant he was able to save a few of the babies that someone had tried to drown because they had taken the mother to eat. It devastated him he never learned who did it. That's when we found out they only lived 2 years. He loved his little guys even though they've been hurt and damaged by what had been happen to them and their mother. When he found out the wildlife people would simply drown them because they were injured he couldn't see that and so he gave them two years where they could play and have fun and enjoy each other until they slowly wore down and passed away. Sadly his company had to increase their vermin extermination fees because of course the possums that have lived there all those years were gone and now they had to kill the rats and mices suddenly started coming into the human areas of the buildings with extreme indifference to the human presence with poisons. Something the possums and cats have been able to do for over 30 years. Where the cats wouldn't go the possums could and since the possums were as large as the cats the cats knew to leave them alone since the cats and the possums we're allowed to live in the same area side by side a 10 acre manufacturing plant in the Heart of the City where people dumped cats all the time and the possum found a place where they could exist with peace until someone decided they were food.

I once met a woman that worked for an opossum rescue. We happened to be at the vet at the same time. That animal was so sweet and her fur was so soft. So the woman asked if I would like to do opossum rescue. I asked how long they live? She said. "Oh, about 3-4 years". My response was, I'm sorry I can't. ❤Found one the size of my finger and syringe fed her, as she got older I fed her a great diet hoping for the best for her release one day. We let he go in a little wooded area behind the house and still feed her today. Seen her a bunch of times and she's soo beautiful now! Sad they don't live longer. 😢 such amazing animals 🤗❤ wish ppl would treat them better. P.S. she was very bonded to me, was scared I'd have to keep her but her instincts kicked in. My Opossum, Floof, made it to 3 years old before she passed one night while I slept. I miss her. One of the best experiences I ever had, caring for her. She used to ride on my head when little, and on my shoulder when much larger lol.

The best way to pick up an opossum is through their legs from the back with your arm against their tummy/chest. They'll hug onto your arm! Don't ever yank an adult opossums tail, they're too heavy and it hurts them

I saw a KZbin video about a woman who had a possum as a pet and she documented their time together. The possum was very sweet and intelligence. I don’t think I could handle it, just two years together though. Such a short lifespan even for those in captivity

I worked for a critter company 20 plus years ago. One call, an old man was showing me his shed in the backyard. He was pretty nervous as he told me about this white rat found inside. He carefully opened the door, I walked in, then he promptly shut the door! I didn’t know what to think, but I went about my job as he was talking to me from outside. After a moving some things around, I found the white rat. It was a very young possum. I didn’t say anything to him as to what I found and continued looking till I was satisfied that was the only animal in the shed. While doing that I had the possum on my shoulder/back. I opened the door. The old man asked if I had found anything and I replied no as I turned to shut the door on the shed with the white rat clinging to my back! Damn near gave him a heart attack, but not really. Then I proceeded to show the possum off educated him on what he found. I didn’t charge him for the short trip and scare.
