Khan academy gave me one quick video on this before giving an entire test. Only did 2 problems, and did not explain it thoroughly enough. I’m so grateful for people like you, because you may have thought “who would want to look up this video and actually watch it into heir free time” and it’s easy to discard ideas that way. But you did it anyway, and it’s helping tremendously. Thankyou.

Excellent video! However, I do have a question. For the last problem (converting 64 fl oz into gallons) cannot be easily derived unless one knows that 1 gal is equal to 128 fl oz. I am almost certain that most people know that 4 qts equals 1 gallon rather than 128 oz equaling 1 gallon. If I am taking a test and I do not know that I gal equals 128 fl oz, how can I convert what I do know, (4 qts equals 1 gallon) to 64 fl oz? I like to start off with what I do know for problems like this. It's a luck in the draw with some standardized tests. They will not offer a key as you've done. Thank you very much for creating this video; it has helped tremendously!
@AllenMorrisColonel6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. The short answer is that there is some base knowledge that you must have. Just what that is, is unknown to me. The person designing the test can do a poor job and be testing your knowledge of base knowledge or the person can do a better job designing the test by giving to you some base knowledge facts that you will have to recognize when you see it. You might have noticed that often times you are given more information than is needed to solve the "Problem." Sometimes you are given two pieces of information that you use to find the third fact that is needed to solve the "Problem." I know that when I am working on something that really matters, I double check formulas and measurements. In the real world, screwing up and costing others means that the second chance that you get is your first chance somewhere else. Exams should be given in the library when you have access to all of the facts that are needed to get the right answer. This is the way that it is in the real world. If I did not answer your question, please let me know. Allenmorris@yahoo.com

When you have a metric system, all based in multiples of 10, which make calculations so intuitive and easy, you rarely need pen and paper, what's the point of using these complicated non-intuitive proportions of the "imperial system"? In physics, when you're calculating speeds and accelerations, as far as i know, both brits and yanks use the same formulas as the rest of us, V=Vo+at, right? using metres and kilometres instead of feet and miles, right? I don't think there's formulas for this using feet, inches or yards, are there? So, if you're using the metric system for the more complex calculus, why not use it for everything, I think it would simplify things for you. What's the point of bringing this useles complication to the table? Is this a trap, to keep the more advanced knowledge secret and out of reach from the less educated people? Really, what's the point? Can anyone explain?
@pinetreefinearts48577 жыл бұрын
Antonio Ferrer That's a good point, but not everything is metric. Pi is not metric, time is not metric, e is not metric, half-life is not metric so it is a good thing to know how to convert rates.

Look at the exam as an opponent; one that you can beat. Know that each question will have enough information to solve it. There will also most likely be more information than you need. Work out the ones that you know you can do and then go back to the ones that you are less certain that you can do. That is, spend your time on doing the ones that you know then finish by working on the ones that you might miss anyway. Let me know how you did please. Keep-a-Learning!
