@@MrWiseman91 Otoh I hardly watch programmed TV anymore :). Still, like I wrote before. Joolz has the same passion for London Street Corners as Phil has for his Flintstones in Time Team. TV were stupid not to pick this up because this is exactly what I think people would like to see.

And that's where we get the term "dead ringer". IF a person was dug up after ringing the bell and later a friend was shocked to see them in the street people would say "he was a dead ringer for So-and-So... " Thanks Joolz for more excellent content!

I enjoyed your film. Mally Powell was a talented singer, from Wales, but lived in Stoke Newington. He had a cracking sense of humour, fantastic voice, and was a well loved local character. "Elvis put his hand on my shoulder", are lyrics taken from one of his songs. A great talent, sadly passed away too soon.

Another Brilliant video, Joolz. About your comments on 'stink poles', where I lived as a boy in west London we new them as 'stench poles' which were a little taller than the average terraced house. The dare was for silly little boys to climb to the top of one and drop an empty milk bottle down the open top. Miraculously, to my knowledge, no one was ever hurt -- although one little girl got a thrashing from her parents for getting her underwear dirty when she successfully climbed one and dropped down her milk bottle.

first time I visited London, must have been in 1964. The Beatles. And as I was standing on a bridge across the Thames, I heard a ship's horn wailing nostalgically , as they're wont to, and I swear I smelled a waft of the old Empire...Also I love Joolz's blazers.

Abney Park Cemetery was my favourite playground in the 1950s. It was locked up, neglected, overgrown and amazingly undisturbed in the middle of the hubbub of London; which meant it was full of flowers, birds, butterflies and animals. I loved it to the max and found nothing creepy or depressing about it as a child - quite the contrary - even though I had to scale a piked fence to get in. It was my very own ‘Secret Garden’ ; a book a still enjoy. Thanks for the memory.

19:40 Where the phrase ‘dead ringers’ comes from. Not an unfounded fear - thousands have been buried in catatonic states - ten years ago a friend of mine woke up in the morgue walked home, was seen knocking on my door to give me a computer and unhappily died a couple of days later. Best to give yourself fourteen days.

I lived in Stoke Newington as a boy, and it wasn't what you see today. It was a boiling pot of multi-multiculturalism, dilapidated housing, and generally the people who had either emigrated or just couldn't afford the better parts of London. Today, normal people cannot afford to live there and the entire place is full of the type of people who enjoy their hops free range.
