Not sure if this was mentioned but while Vienna Beef is the go to Chicago hotdog. Red Hot Chicago is the second most common hotdog brand served here. Also, a few places do their own thing, like Superdawg uses David Berg hotdogs. I do agree that char dogs add flavor and in my opinion are the best. One other thing is I’d recommend trying a Chicago Francheezie style hotdog, it’s wrapped in bacon and deep fried with melted Cheddar or American cheese.

Had my first Vienna Beef hot dog in the summer of 1964 at the age of 12. The hot dog shack at Archer Avenue and Nashville Avenue, Garfield Ridge neighbor hood. Of course, I was 12 and only wanted it with catsup, nothing else. It came with a ton of greasy fries wrapped up with it (so good), had that red dye that made it really stand out, a true red hot. No canola oil, just beef fat for the fries, so tasty, so unhealthy. I miss those days. My schoolmates clued me into the catsup is bad form deal, but it was really good with those fries! There is a food convention about America that is actually noted by many foreign food commentators and critics: in America a hot dog is a "hot dog" and a beef hamburger is a "hamburger". If a hot dog is a sandwich, then a taco is a sandwich. If a taco is a sandwich, then a calzone is a sandwich. If a calzone is a sandwich, then pizza is an open-face sandwich. If pizza is a sandwich, then everything is a sandwich, but everything obviously can't be a sandwich, so we must have taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque. If the term "sandwich" is to have any meaning, it needs some strict and well defined parameters: a sandwich is one or more edible substances between two pieces of something, usually bread. (Select items that don't quite comply can be grandfathered in by virtue of their age, namely rou-jia-mo from c. 221 BC. (Hotdog may qualify in a couple of millenia.))
@SirRichardHardenThicke3 ай бұрын
Yes. The bread must have yeast and have a top piece and a bottom piece, and not be made of compacted ground meat. In the Midwest we have loose meat SANDWICHES, not a loose meat burger. If I threw ham and American cheese between two flour tortillas would that be a sandwich? Or an unwarmed quesadilla? Say I roll it up and make it "fancy?" Is that a pinwheel, or a sandwich roll?
@codyssmith734 ай бұрын

The heated competition between Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island (next door to each other) in Detroit both use natural casing dogs produced by Dearborn Sausage Company. I must say, I prefer the coney style dog over the "dragged through the garden" Chicago style dog but I do find the Vienna Beef dogs out of Chicago much more superior to the Dearborn Sausage Company's dog. I need to go back to Chicago again to get another case and bring them back home to make coney dogs. Best of both worlds lol
