It is all about the intention behind the fasting. Fasting for the long life of your husband, which does not actually result in the long life of one's husband does not make sense. The purpose of fasting during ramadhan is to make one more pious, humble, and understanding of the struggles of other people. When you're fasting thinking about others, helping those who are less fortunate, and focused on God, you come out of the experience a better less self-centered person.

Exactly, everyone has their own customs and traditions. There are different reasons, different depths to traditions. Planting tulsi is also a tradition, and only recently 'scientific research' discovered the benefits of planting a tulsi plant inside the house. Does this mean until this 'western discovery' people who were following the tradition weren't modern? Take your tag of modernity somewhere else.
