She’s the most realistic mom Disney has ever shown. She doesn’t have magic powers or super abilities. She’s just doing the best she can in a very sucky situation. You can see it in her face or hear it in her voice how tired and overwhelmed she is, and yet she still remains positive and loving to Jim.

Not trying to diminish what you’re saying but both Hercules’s and Tarzan’s adoptive mothers are somewhat realistic too. They didn’t know the powerful tactics Hercules and Tarzan had but they raised them right when one negativity could’ve turn them like Anakin Skywalker

Close family friend, yes, but not from before Jim's dad left. The character of Dr. Doppler was written with David Hyde Pierce in mind, and Pierce was given a copy of the Treasure Planet script along with preliminary sketches of the character and the film's scenic elements while he was working on A Bug's Life. Disney has a bad habit of ruining films when they release, this and Pocahontas are prime examples. Let me explain, yes Pocahontas despite the mix reviews, made 346 million dollars world wide, but they cut two scenes that would have improved the movie, not by much but it would not had the complaints it did. And when I saw the ads for Treasure Planet, all I remember is why did the spoil that Silver was going to turn (I know it's in the book and other movies) but that was handled better, this was not. However, what they did to Pocahontas was an accident, what they did to Treasure Planet, releasing it against high profile films, that was no accident. At least the Directors did a few more films then bolted before Disney went mad.

Is this the first movie where Disney started the trend of making the parental figure weirdly hot? Like besides Sarah Hawkins there is future characters like Aunt Cass in Big hero 6 or Aunt May in the Tom Holland Spiderman movies. Could also argue it started with Tarzan's parents, but they didn't get a speaking role so not sure it counts.

Creeper Creations How can you normal surf in a violated area? It's in the ocean! JK 😂. People can and do monitor airspace in real life, so it must be like that. Perhaps it's a place with air traffic, like public flights or shipping routes.

Jim Hawkins looks like the human version of Raphael much like Daniel is Leo from Karate Kid, Donnie is Milo from Atlantis the Lost Empire, and lastly Mickey is Eugene from Tangled.
