The chime instrument used for the B-flat note which repeated throughout Le gibet perfectly describes the sound of the bell chiming as said in the poem

It was a classical tubular games instrument but the fact to record le Gibet in the Libanese Church in Paris was perfect for the cd. Compare the sound of the TV Studio and the sound of the CD (Play List Conductor's Discography) Best regards. Laurent Petitgirard

Very good orchestration! It is hard to orchestrate a Ravel's piano piece, it is a hard and intimidating task.

Thank you so much for this performance. As beautiful as the “outer movements” are, there’s just something magical about Le Gibet. There is pain, there is beauty, there is contemplation. The orchestra captures this feeling perfectly. Bravo

WHY IS THIS MASTERPIECE SO UNDERRATED
@Petitgirard13 жыл бұрын
Since I create it at the request of Marius Constant, I did conduct it almost 20 times all over the world. Eschenbach, Conlon and a few other conductors did it but not very often. Scarbo is extremly difficult for the orchestra and you need a few rehearsales. But unfortunatly I believe that the main reason is that as well Ondine, Le Gibet and Scarbo finish pianissimo and does not call for a major public excitation, it is a pity. I did a few concerts with my friend Jean-Philippe Collard with him playing Ondine at the piano, than the orchestra played the orchestral version etc... including Pictures at an Exhibition, and this was very exciting for the audience to compare both versions.

Ondine is very in Ravel's style of orchestration. Le Gibet a little less and Scarbo quite different. But to create it with my firend Marius Constant was very exciting.

Wow, I am a big fan of Petitgirard, the Daphnis et Chloe recording is also the best Daphnis recording, it sounds like Ravel. I really like the Prévin and Boulez recordings, but Petitgirard is even better!

@Petitgirard12 жыл бұрын
I agree with you for Ondine which is indeed close to Ravel's orchestration, Le Gibet is already a little more special and Scarbo is quite different, this explain why Ravel did not orchestrate him self Gaspard de la Nuit, Scarbo seems to him too pianistic.

Great to listen the version by an symphony orchestra! After great musicians like Ivo Pogorelich, Martha Argerich or Auto Benedetti Michelangeli I really miss the lyrics. The breathing. The warmth and tenderness in this performance. This could be carried out much better. But don't worry: I don't criticise to damage or to destroy this concert. But please try to listen more to Ravel himself!

Merci M. Petitgirard pour cette vidéo de grande qualité. Cela semble avoir été filmé pour la télévision. Je me demande ce que sont devenus tous ces jeunes musiciens de l'OSF...
@Petitgirard1 Жыл бұрын

"Gaspard de la nuit" was written for an orchestra first. It is NOT ORCHESTRATED, is FOR AN ORCHESTRA itself.
@Petitgirard1 Жыл бұрын
Gaspard de la Nuit is a piano piece in 3 parts composed by Ravel who never orchestrated it. My very dear friend Marius Constant wrote the orchestration (with the publisher Durand authorization) in 1989 and I conducted the first recording and the world premiere in 1990. So you do a confusion, Gaspard was first a piano solo piece and was orchestrated 80 years later.
