Preeminent ensemble of the entire era - even the Busch Quartet comes only second, after them
Interesting to hear all of the "portamento" (swooping between notes) that was part of the style of playing at the time. Sensitive and certainly atmospheric overall. Thanks for posting this historical recording, made during Ravel's lifetime!

also interesting that with old quartets like Capet and Curtis you CAN hear the cello pizzicato in the second subject...which you hardly ever can with more modern groups...can they not hear the balance required?

The portamento figured greatly in classical violin playing until World War II, after which European musical culture was in shambles. It was widely used in orchestral performance and in music of every period almost wherever a slur is written in the score. It was neither thought of a special effect nor something extraneous to the composition itself. Rather, it served a greater musical purpose as a way of "guiding the ear."
