Raven Painting on Abstract Landscape

Hey friends!
Today I paint my favorite bird... A raven. Not only do I paint a raven, but I also combined it with an abstract landscape background. I think this combination really worked well together!
This is on a 20x24 inch canvas which I textured with modeling paste and then gessoed.

Hi Lydia, I just found you because I saw the raven! Like you, I adore all the corvids, but these magical birds are my favourites. I'm so lucky because my little house in the north of England is directly opposite a great big hilly field, large woods and a little stream so I spend a lot of time watching our jackdaws, magpies, crows and ravens squabbling happily together, and chasing away an army of other native British birds and squirrels, who seem to think they have the right to share in the fun. I love your artwork very, very much, you are extremely talented and I think you must have worked so hard o develop it so beautifully. I also love your sense of humour, so dry and witty. Great paint’g. I’m a birder, determan’g size is difficult but look at the tail. Crow has flat squared off shape, Rav’ has a definite curved tail, like a spoon❤. 🐦🦅🦉

The blues and purples on the raven make it seem really magical. Very cool. I love your inner voice and hope she pops in sometimes. She's very cheeky, though, and I hope she got a little bit of paint on her butt. Mine is terribly cheeky, too. She thinks she's always right.

OMG...I don't know what is more creative...your painting or your production. Plus, just your genius about you subject matter further illustrates your genius!! Migraines are crippling... Especially when you have things you really want to do and can't. I get rather tempestuous on those occasions.😬 I love texture too. What do you like to use for texture?

@@lydiabroderick867 ANYTHING that makes texture. Crackle paste, Modeling paste, heavy /gloss/matte gel, my favorite black lava get, foil, tissue paper, paper flake get...see ANYTHING. I am going to look at your channel to see how I might send you a couple. I DO NOT post on someone's post or video...tacky. Cape Cod is one of the most beautiful places in the country!

Holy smokes. I would never have been able to envision using so many steps and techniques to achieve this. I feel completely inadequate - it would be hard to replicate your beautiful work. I do have the good fortune to live in a forest full of Corvids. They convened by the hundreds to feast on a dead elk last year, thus also inadvertently helping to nab the poacher. (Who knows, it *could* have been intentional.)

in our back yard in SE Phoenix valley, the easiest way to tell crows from ravens is that the crows travel in murders of 10-15, and the ravens are always in pairs. ours are barely larger than the crows. I wish they'd drive the pigeons (or as my brother calls them, "flying rats") away. Have you considered a ZipLoc bag for Miz Inner Voice? A couple sessions of "hmmm . . . would you call that cobalt or cerulean? what? no snide response? well let's just let in a LITTLE air . . . " might do her some good.

Ravens will mingle and feed with groups of crows. I know because i feed them and watch it and have it on video. I also contacted the man who conducted the famous crow study and he confirmed this as well. The voice of a raven is also a distinguishing factor.

I feel so sorry for you that you have to go through that painful migraine. Could it be due to all the chemical fumes from the paint and the paint media? If you during a migraine try to go outside for a couple of hours, and the migraine begins to ease off in the fresh air, it is very likely the headache is caused by the paint. That just means you should paint close to an open window in the future. Wishing you all the best. ❤❤❤

Hi! I find oil paint to be way richer and because it dries slower, I have more working time. I do varnish my works with Gamvar by Gamblin.☺
