I've been in the avian field for nearly 40yrs now. Having "hands on" experience with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey. And the "Corvid family" of birds consisting of; Ravens, Crows, Rooks, Jackdaws, Magpies, Jays, & Nutcrackers are some of my favorite i've worked with. Their intelligence is off the charts in terms of figuring out puzzles and even learning human speech on par with parrots if not better...!!! Common Ravens have VERY few natural avian predators since they are so large. Averaging 25in with a 4-4.5ft wingspan which puts them in the "Hawk sized" category. And they LOVE antagonizing birds of prey and just for the sheer delight of it...!!! While out in the field i've even seen them going after eagles...!!! Tumbling and soaring just as good as any bird of prey can. It's like watching a dog fight between two fighter jets. Their beaks are massive and quite sharp with a slight hook at the tip unlike their smaller crow cousins. They use this for tearing and ripping into flesh and they are VERY capable predators in their own right. I've seen them killing puffins a small coastal bird and rats, rabbits, etc...So they are FAR more then mere scavengers. I think smaller birds of prey and ravens have a mutual respect for each other. Which is why they aren't predated on as much as other species of birds.

That hawk is actually a Red Shouldered Hawk! I've always known of this hawk to be a less pickier eater than its Red Tailed Hawk counterpart! Those crows were trying to get more of that hot dog than the hawk was! They should treat that hawk with more respect, especially since hawks hunt for their meals, and hunting is never an easy task! Nicely done job getting the action!

Thanks for the comment! I think I've heard that hawk make a sound like a frog. I'll have to look up red shouldered hawk sounds, because I couldn't find a red tailed hawk making that sound.

I've only known of one sound that Red Shouldered Hawks make, and that's the "errrrr errrr" sound. Perhaps you heard a short "err" voice. I'll have to listen closely next time you record this hawk! By the way I subscribed to your channel, and I gave you a like! Also I forgot to mention one more thing. Red Tailed Hawks make the famous "kereee" call that is often dubbed for the Bald Eagle in Hollywood movies. They can also make short peeping calls as well.

@@jeremyhirzel6256 I'm starting to think I may have a resident frog as well as a resident haw.

I figured it out. Ravens can make a frog sound.

Ohhh, that's right. I'm not too familiar with raven sounds since there are no ravens in Georgia. However, I have heard sounds of ravens on KZbin. They make all kinds of sounds, and they can mimic other sounds, just like crows do! But, their most well-known call is a very low pitched "croak" call! Very nice observation!
