I love it. When I was 16 I listened to ravi shankars music during long sleepless nights. It was not only a listening, but even more a traveling ....

Music knows no race, skin color, or other form of discrimination. Music is a universal language. Music is one of the few things from heaven that we have on earth. The closer you are to music, the closer you can be to God. Plain and simple.

One of the very rare pieces where Ravi Shankar has played decently & peacefully. The taal played by Alla Rakha is not Jhaptal, it is Roopak, a 7 beats rhythmic cycle.

Thanks so much for this upload. Love listening to sucdaughterh classical music and specially where Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustald Alla Rakha are concerned - two of my favourite artists. Another to add on to this is Anoushka Shankar, Pandit Ravi Shankar's daughter. Love this rag.

From the first note to the last, the listener gets the impression that the very purpose of sitar is to play Charukeshi and that the very purpose of Charukeshi is to flow from the sitar. This matching is truly inspired and divine.

ustaad ji and pandit ji made such a wonderful pair. To come by anything in comparison to the likes of these two legends in terms of a pair would be quite difficult. The music is filled with so much emotion, kinda takes you back.

The audio on this clip of Panditji's is amazing, especially the sitar sound! Raviji has done so much to popularize this traditional South Indian raga in North Indian music style. By the way it looks like its the sitar builder late Nadu Mullick playing tanpura.

You're absolutely right. Mastery of music is a lifestyle, not an achievement. It's great in that this brings out some of the more eccentric elements of his personality. Some exciting modal exploration, and a few really characteristic Andolan sways.

I think Allah Rakha and Dildar Hussain are the greatest Tabla players in recorded history. It is a great pity that beautiful music such as this is losing popularity in the sub-continent. The attendant at the store where I used to buy Ravi Shankar, Poonchwaley etc. records always thought I was buying them for my grandfather.

@420lovinlife I agree that American needs more of this culture, but I'd rather not force anything... Young people like me find this stuff and love it. Maybe if it were more available more people in general would be interested in it because they're able to listen to it and find that they like it. So basically what you've just said...

Raga music for those who listen to music in ways trained purely by aesthetics can understand it is a language of desire, joy, and their are it's lows as well. And very much a testament of the soul. and communicating feelings instantaneously. Imagine jazz- you think of lounge rooms and martinis, with Raga you YES YOU have the life time opportunity to hear another's soul. I don't expect people who listen to metal, rap, emo to understand. listen to classical for a while. You'll see my point. :)

Awesome ! This is transcendental music. Incredible. If there are better music than this I bet you'd have casted already. So far, only Ravi Shankar has the ability to synthesize it to something everyone can hear. If there are better works of art like these, "Let's hear them out too" Rauf Sheldrake, Mt. Lavinia, SL..

in an Indian Classical concert 90-95% of the stuff is improvised on the basis of Raagas and Taals. The only time you hear a lot of fixed material is in a Tabla solo, and even that is largely adapted.

Hi the sitar is quite popular in England. There is a shop in london called "Bina Musicals" try them on the internet. The man who makes sitars for ravi and his daughter Anoushka has a shop in Delhi. The name is "RIKHI RAM and sons" check on internet google and they will export to you. they are slightly expensive about 600uk pounds, but top quality ravi style sitars. The mans name is AJAY. good luck.
