Great job, Nick and Lex! The whole Monterey Pop festival (made into a documentary by D.A. Penebaker) is a historic event. Performances also by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Burden & the Animals, the Mamas and Papas, and more. Kinda set the stage for Woodstock. Thanks, my Friends. 😽🔥

Hi Michele, I immediately thought of you, when the title popped up 😄 Were you there ? 🤔 My older brother had a LP of Ravi, but I think I only listened once to it, when I was young ... just didn't get it ... the cultural gap was too big 🤣 by the way ... there is a new mixtape available: all new music of 2023 and it's only part 1 of my double mixtape 🤘 Looking forward to hear from you ❤

Btw. Anoushka Shankar, Ravi's daughter, is a virtuoso sitar player. She performed in the Sydney Opera House earlier this month as part of the Sydney Festival.

I had the insanely fortunate experience of seeing Ravi Shankar and his orchestra perform at McCarter Theater in Princeton, NJ way back in the 1970s. By then I had already experienced Shankar from his performance on George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh, and from that I bought an album he had done (East Meets West?) with the London Philharmonic. McCarter Theater is a nice intimate venue that lent itself very nicely to Shankar's intimate music. The whole evening was a transcendent journey and when the last quiet note was plucked the whole audience sat there mesmerized for several very still seconds before erupting into a thunderous applause, just like in the Monterey video. His daughter Anoushka Shankar also plays beautifully and performs today. You can see her on The Concert for George DVD or album.

We got to see Ravi Shankar play live in Austin in 2003 and 2008, both times with his daughter, Anoushka, who also plays sitar. I love that she and her half-sister, Norah Jones, have forged such a positive relationship with each other! Great video, NickNLex - keep ‘em coming!! 👏👏👏

Great choice Michele Michele! This entire festival is sooo good. Ravi Shankar also played at the Concert for George which was an outstanding tribute to the late artist. He was also a good friend of George's. Thanks so much guys for this reaction!❤

These movies were the way to see the concerts of the day with the small mono speaker hanging from your car window. So many back in the old days of the early 70's.

Ravi had toured the US starting in the early 60s, but usually presented in a more "formal" concert setting. I'm pretty sure this was the first time he appeared at a pop festival, and sitar music had been becoming more popular with the "youth/hippie" crowd, particularly after George Harrison introduced one to the Beatles' music. The full clip included in the Monterey Pop film is considerably longer - this is the climactic ending - and, among many other rockers, Jimi Hendrix is seen grooving in the audience ... You guys know that Ravi is singer Norah Jones' father, right? He was 59 when she was born.

It's often a mind blower to see masters such as these at work/play. Thanks for sharing. On May 2, 1971 a couple of friends and I went to Stillwater, Oklahoma where an outdoor mini fest was happening. It was my first time seeing Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha. It was a small scene, nothing like Monterey, maybe a hundred folks there, if my memory is right. I was able to sit front and center. No chairs or anything, just find some soft grass kind of seating. Just before the show, Ravi requested no smoking during his set. It was as you would expect it to have been. Mind blowing. In a shocking contrast to the sound of Eastern ragas, the other main attraction at the fest was The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who were riding their hit "Mr. Bogangles". They played one set, went on break, and came back out wearing old timey uniforms/costumes for a second set. They were very enjoyable, but what a strange contrast in acts. I was fortunate enough to also catch 2 dates of the George Harrison Dark Horse tour in November 1974, which featured Shankar Family and Friends as sort of a 30-40 minute interlude between George's amazing band's sets. Over the last 20 years we've also been able to catch a few Zakir Hussain (Alla Rakha's son) performances, who is also a master Tabla player, and an original and still member of Shakti, along with John McLaughlin.

Thanks M.M. ! NicknLex might also enjoy the Concert For George (2002). There is a segment of the concert where Indian musicians directed by Shankar play a piece written by him, and there is a great solo sitar piece played by his daughter Anoushka. There is a Monty Python segment, and many of George's friends play his songs. Clapton plays on most songs, and a couple of highlights are when he and McCartney played "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (Clapton played on the original), and when they harmonized on "Something". The interviews and DVD Extras are good too. There is also Ringo, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston, Gary Brooker, and George's son Dhani, who looks like a young George, and many other musicians George had played with.

Another fine michelemichele production...NicknLex comments are points well taken...The Ravi Shankar performance of which this was an excerpt was nearly an hour long, and could never happen in 2024 with today's nanosecond attention spans...The communal experience between artist and audience, the rapt attention they paid to wholly unfamiliar music but appreciating the artistry (many in attendance were artists themselves), as it builds to a climax and audience eruption that's the high point of a great film of historic performances. Released n 1968 but actually a 1967 music festival that changed EVERYTHING as much as the Beatles...

A whole new universe of sounds on the channel. The technique on the instrument is phenomenal. It was great watching Nick and Alexia’s faces transform. The Sitar is such an otherworldly instrument I tried playing one once and was utterly lost. Just trying to hold it was utterly alien. Thanks Michelle Michelle for keeping us on our toes with amazing requests. Great reaction Nick and Alexia. Wish I could have been there but I would have broke a ton of laws driving there as a nine year old. I shoulda tried.

Alla Rakha, Ustad Zakir Hussain's late father, is the genius on tabla sitting next to Ravi Shankar. The two of them, at this particular concert, basically announced Indian classical music to the world for the first time on a MASSIVE scale. This was the beginning of jazz fusion in the West, and the reason why the Beatles' music actually became interesting.

What a great performance, and great choice to react to! Just over a month ago I bought the 3 DVD set of this Monterey Pop Festival. The extras on the DVD talk about how the camera crew originally didn't plan to film much of this performance, but as it went on, they realized they had something very special and kept going, not knowing if they had enough film left in the camera for it. I think it was the highlight of the entire festival.

We see Mikey Dolenz from the Monkees in the audience at 12:09. Monterey Pop Festival was the convergence between LA bands, and San Francisco bands. There was some resentment that the LA bands had sold out to commercialism. Janis's management prevented her from being filmed for this reason but she pleaded with them and although they performed already on the Sat that weekend, they were the only band they brought back on Sun just so she could be filmed. That performance gave her international recognition.

Sound seems too low. Is it just me? I love love love Ravi and Phillip Glass' song "Prashanti", which is sung by Ravi, beautifully. Love it so much I learned to sing it...and actually pretty well. It is about the history of civilization, from the Golden Age to today's dark age, ending in a boom, followed by a hymn of peace, not unlike "Soon". There is a version with just that part, which is most beautiful.

I was bored one Fri. night, on my first month at collage, in 1969. I found a flyer, 'Music of India' Ravi Shankar. Donation/students $1.00. I watched and listened, and grew, and walked out of there 1 1/2 hrs. later a 'completely different person'.
