I still remember the time when he formally introduced Zakir to the classical stage as a young prodigy. Legend has it that to create a prodigy, Zakir's father used to drum on his mom's tummy when she was expecting him. I believe in those 9 months, Zakir learnt all the basics of tabla while still in the womb :)

One information nugget. With love and respect we call the accomplished musicians Ustad or Pandit. Ustad is Urdu word mean expert, highly skilled. Same is meaning of Pandit which is Sanskrit word. Both words also mean Guru.... the teacher or accomplished one. So the Muslim musicians are honoured with title Ustad and Hindu ones with Pandit. Different words, same love and respect ...

In June of 1967, Shankar made his way to Monterey, CA for the Monterey Pop Festival for his first major American performance. To this day, the landmark three-day event remains to one of the most famous concerts of all time, also featuring the first major U.S. performances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Who, the first large-scale concert for Janis Joplin, and the debut of a young soul singer by the name of Otis Redding. Despite the abundance of legendary performances at the festival, Shankar’s set remains one of the most memorable. Accompanied by his tabla player Alla Rakha, Shankar delivered an entrancing performance, showcasing his unparalleled technical skill and unique sound. [Andrew George Latore O'Brien, better known by his stage name The Notorious A.O.B. (or O'Biggie Smalls)] Shankar was a second Father to George Harrison and when Harrison died Shankar composed a piece for him 'Arpan' performed by his daughter Anoushka. [A concert for George] Definitely worth a listen. As both a performer and composer Shankar was visionary and a truly wondrous musical talent. Rakha was arguably the best tabla player of all time. .

I hope you realize how rare of a video this is. Not only is are both the audio and video absolutely PRISTINE for a concert from this time, but this is a FULL LENGTH recording of masters from a bygone era playing their respective instruments. Ustad Alla Rakha, playing tabla, was Zakir Hussain's father, and as you well know, Pandit Ravi Shankar was a sitar maestro whose daughter Anoushka is now a master in her own right. What you see in the latter half of the video is known as jugalbandi - a piece of a concert where the two musicians do a call-and-response to each other, starting with long pieces and gradually shortening the time of their calls and responses until eventually they meld together, becoming and playing as one. This was an absolute JOY to watch.

I loved that you guys did a reaction to this. At 8:15 it was Jimi Hendrix listening to the master. Google Ravi Shankar's interview about Monterey Pop . He tells how everyone was on LSD and he hated it. Also he hated how Hendrix broke and burnt his guitar live on stage
