Yeah, he's falling back on happy stories of times passed because it gives him a window to smile and laugh a little bit which assists in preventing him from bursting out laughing. He's smiling and casually laughing because he really thinks things are going well, and that nobody suspects him of anything sinister. His entire demeanor changes later that night in the interrogation room. He is no longer smiling and laughing because now he knows that he's the prime suspect, and he knows that he's done for. His last hope was the polygraph. If he could somehow pass the polygraph, that might have cleared him, or so he thought (it wouldn't have). Needless to say he failed the polygraph miserably.
